I Modified a 5 5-ton log Splitter that Runs without Gas now ! so I can actually Split some firewood with it. Watch to see how this splits wood!
For the Money Around $300. I Saved at Least $1500 By Not Buying a Gas Powered Log Splitter. I Believe This is a Good Valued Product. You can split many cords of wood for the cost of buying 1.5 cords. I Like How it is Small, Compact, and Can Be Moved Around Easily. I Especially Like How I Don't Have to Shuttle Gas Around and it is Much Much Quiet to Run. Then the 22 Ton Gas Powered Log Splitter I Previously Owned.

The dual switch/lever is for safety - you know that. The front support logs for leveling are a bit precarious but I understand why you did that. You might be able to design an ajustable "stop" on the sliding guide rails next to the piston to limit return travel on the ram using steel pipe and a threaded knob. I like the foot pedal and the piston "pedal" is an interesting adaptation. If you take a few minutes to make it better, connect to a bigger bottom and use a hinge, and attach a bottom for the electric foot pedal, your work are will be a bit more stable all around. 10g cord makes sense as well. Thanks for the tips.

Did you check the fluid levels? Did you bleed the air line? Must check the fluid levels and bleed the lines ~ I like using the BARK FOR KINDLING! Starts fast, hot, and longer than wood kindling

Electric motors last longer if you don't subject them to a fresh start every time you split a log. I have the same exact set up as shown here, and only use the clamp to hold the motor on. I don't turn it off for each log split. Might want to consider this.

I don't understand the reason for the foot switch the clamp is enough I just leave my running but I do like the the foot pedal for the lever

I did some checking and even though I checked the oil when I first got it was about a half a quarter low. Found the pressure relief valve and turned it in about 2 turns. Now I have it modified so the lever pulls another small lever and turns the power on. Have it spring connected so the lever turns the motor on then farther in the swing it operates the hydraulic ram. So simple I don't know why didn't think of it sooner. With the fixes it does better but still can't split my fresh cut oak. It does a lot better now.

Good to see these can be made to work properly. I have one but at the moment it is mostly only good for making kindling.

You only need one foot, Open that sucker up and change that switch to one that stays on. I bought the yard max 6.5 ton , it has a switch that stays on. I like your foot pedal for the ram, Think I"ll make one with that concept but a little more permanent.

I have a 5 ton splitter and what I do is put a small piece of log sideways between the push bar and log that I’m about to split. That blade will rip right through the log that way. Try it out.

Great video. Made me think that I would spend more money and get a 20ton double splitter. Cuts back and forward. But you have made using this machine with the 'free" hands the job much easier.

I tried to use mine in mid-winter ( - 15 C ) and it was useless and kept blowing the fuse. So I split 5 cords by splitting axe. The following year I used the electric log splitter in fall (5 - 10 C ) to split logs in 1/2 and 1/4 and 1/8 and stack butts in rows facing N-S for wind to dry down. I will do your pre-season adjustment and fill up. I love the foot pedal idea for motor switch and heavier gage extension cord.

A manufacturer recommends that you use ATF as hydraulic oil for temps below 40 •F. Otherwise SAE 32.

Place a cross bar across both pedals so you can operate them with one foot also placing a back block will bring the log closer to the wedge
@highwatercircutrider

I just use a 6” chunk of 4”x4” to extend the ram’s push reach all the way to the wedge. Your working yourself to death having to finish the split with a hatchet.

Same experience here. Bought a 7 ton electric splitter and set it up and was disappointed with the anemic performance. I then added about 1 1/2 quarts of hydraulic oil and BAM!, what a difference! It made a beast out of a pussycat. I also had better results running it slightly downhill so the fluid was getting to the pump intake a little faster. And I also modified mine for one handed operation, I used a different method to accomplish this than you did, but it works fine. All I need to do is hold a lever that I made down and it cycles just fine. I'm not sure what the logic of making these so it takes two hands to cycle the thing in the interest of 'safety'. It makes it hard to position the log and steady it.

Okay I'll try again I just bought one from HF and first test on the back porch it seemed okay. Then when I used my 100' extension cord and it wouldn't split the oak tree wood I just cut down even in short pieces. Didn't trip the breaker but just didn't have enough force. I will try a few of your tips and try again. One thing I would like to do is connect the lever to the electrical switch like another YT guy did. If I can get a little more force out of it I will do that, but right now I'm pretty disappointed with the performance.

cord may be too long, shorter the better power . the longer the cord the more current loss the wire has resistance .

You are lifting logs 18" higher than is necessary. That is awkward and tiring. I mounted my splitter to a secondary 2 wheel cart w big wheels so that the logs are at a convenient height. A table/stand would work just as well, but my way means you do not need to lift the heavy splitter.
@bigjimcountryboy
@bigjimcountryboy Жыл бұрын
the hight of my tailgate is perfect height for and it is convenient to split the wood as I unload it , not having to move it again. I cut and load it. then slit as I unload it . as I unload (split it ) I stack it. I'm not stacking it in the video because I would not have a good video angle. what works best for you or the person doing the work is best. I can lift theese logs all day ,picking stuff up off the ground is harder for me . Thanks for your comment and watching I upgraded to a gas powered splitter . The electric one works and has its uses but the gas one is faster. But gives me lower back fatigue because it is lower I find my self working half bent over.

And you need skip the 5 ton they do not work well. They are all same just different sticker badges from tractor supply, harbour freight, lowes, H.depot etc The $340 6.5 ton wen and $599 7 ton boss are better built. bigger motors, and will split easier , there by lasting longer because are not under more stress like a 5 ton. I was able pick up a used 6.5 ton Wen for $200, had a stand and a foot pedal power switch.
