being self taught it gives me more understanding of why my portraits look so light. I am not using enough value, saturation or contrast. very helpful

Thank you, I'm so happy to hear you found the video helpful! :) And as someone who is also self taught, I relate to what you say. I used to find it very difficult to see what I was doing 'wrong' and a lot of my progress came from accidentally stumbling upon something new while drawing. That natural progress is still important, but looking into theory once in a while definitely helps!

Nice examples. Basically, all neutrals and colors fall into 5 values: *LIGHT *LIGHT/MEDIUM *MEDIUM *MEDIUM/DARK *DARK. Some examples of value contrasts: *PURE YELLOW AND PURE WHITE will always create a LOW VALUE CONTRAST look because PURE YELLOW is a LIGHT color and PURE WHITE is THE LIGHTEST neutral/color. *PURE YELLOW AND PURE GREEN will always create a MEDIUM VALUE CONTRAST look because PURE YELLOW is a LIGHT color and PURE GREEN is a MEDIUM color. *PURE YELLOW AND PURE BLUE will always create a HIGH VALUE CONTRAST look because PURE YELLOW is a LIGHT color and PURE BLUE is a MEDIUM/DARK color. *PURE BLUE AND PURE GREEN will always create a LOW VALUE CONTRAST look because PURE BLUE is a MEDIUM/DARK color and PURE GREEN is a MEDIUM color. *SPRING GREEN/LIGHT GREEN AND BURGUNDY/DARK RED will always create a MEDIUM VALUE CONTRAST look because SPRING GREEN/LIGHT GREEN is a LIGHT/MEDIUM color and BURGUNDY/DARK RED is a MEDIUM/DARK color.

Sorry but value is not the same as the brightness of a color....that would be intensity.

I have always heard brightness (or sometimes darkness/lightness) being used when describing the value of a color, so I tend to stick to that usage. I recognize that people use many different terms to describe ideas in art theory, so I did my best in the video to elaborate on what I meant by the term 'brightness' as to not cause confusion, in this case being a word used to describe how relatively light or dark a color is on a scale from black to white. I realize that brightness can also refer to other concepts in color theory, so perhaps I'll use different terminology next time. Thanks for the comment! :)
