Preferred method is the aeropress. But that’s not answering the question. I like the hario v60

My favorite brewing device/tool is probably the Hario V60. I don’t have a Kalita Wave, so I can’t make a comparison, but the v60 brews so much easier and cleaner than a Chemex; but if you do a few hacks, the chemex does make a good cup of coffee. I’ll use my v60 for single or double cups just for me, and the chemex if I’m making a big batch for me and others.

V60 is great for precision and is such a classic honestly. We totally agree that the Chemex is great for sharing/big batches. In this video, we were comparing these 3 methods side by side with the same coffee and we found that the Chemex brew allowed for the strongest strawberry aromatics. The coffee roast we used was on the delicate side but all 3 methods produced a great cup of coffee!

I use a chemex daily and it’s my ride or die. I just can’t use those brown paper filters. There’s a like, licorice-y taste the paper imparts to thr coffee I just can’t seem to rinse away before brewing. Anyone else have that problem? I use a reusable hemp filter every day and it works perfectly.

It is perhaps less popular to say so, but I greatly prefer Chemex over the V60. For our household, it produces the absolute cleanest, crispest flavors - especially on lighter roasts - and also the best body. We don’t own a Kalita Wave yet, but have had it from a local cafe.

Is that roast/blend named or inspired by the book of the same name?

Yes, they are all pour over but each device produces slightly different outcomes. For this brew, we preferred the Chemex because it produced the highest aromatics!

Umm, correct me if I am wrong but these are all the same brewing method- Drip- just different makers and filters.

This is 3 different ways to make pour over coffee! Drip involves a machine usually. But, we tested these 3 different methods with the same roast and tried them side by side. We found that there were subtle differences from each method!

@@SeattleCoffeeGear Well, you’ve lost me there. To me, these are all clearly pour over coffee/drip. The grind would be the same for all three and all three work the same way. To me, three different methods would be something like drip/pour over, French Press, Siphon, etc.. Again, the only difference I see is the brands and paper filters used. Could you explain more how these three methods are all different?
@SeattleCoffeeGear

@@seanhartman6496 Yes! The differences between these 3 methods are very subtle which is why we thought it would be interesting to try it out. V60 is designed for medium roast to darker coffees, caramel, chocolate. It's better for precise pouring and typically has a pretty thin filter leading to a heavier body than a Chemex, for example. The Kalita has a more versatile design and because of the flat bottom (vs sharp cone of the V60) it is more forgiving in its pour and is great for beginners. This method is also perfect for any coffee roast. Lastly, the Chemex uses pretty thick filters in comparison and is best suited for lighter/delicate coffees. Its design is also great for pouring for a group since it doubles as a carafe where as the other two methods are typically brewed over a small glass pitcher or even a mug for a single serve. For this specific brewing test, the Chemex coffee had way more notes of strawberry in both aromatics and taste because it is really great for delicate coffees or roasts with specific notes like strawberry in this case. All in all, they are very similar methods and all produce great coffee but we are coffee nerds and found it fun to test them side by side 🤓

@@SeattleCoffeeGear I appreciate the design and material differences between different pour over coffee makers and I thank you for displaying the results, but as to calling them all different “methods”, I think the famous line from The Princess Bride, - “I don’t think that word means what you think it means”- sums it up nicely.
