No-one mentioned Tarkovsky, the greatest Russian director. How sad.
@user-vn2on9tz9g
@user-vn2on9tz9g Жыл бұрын
I liked Tarkovsky at first, but then after questioning myself, why are his films so existential, abstract and deliberately obscure at many episodes, I stopped thinking of him as one of the greatest directors. Many people can't understand these abstractions, cause it's simply not understood, why can't an artist make his thoughts clearer and more understandable for the benefits of the viewers, not for the benefits of the abstract, existential art
@MK-lm6hb

@@user-vn2on9tz9g Anything worth knowing is difficult to understand. Life itself is mysterious. And death, too. Mystery is in the centre of not only art but science, too. Russian culture is so interesting precisely because it is focused on mystery in our relationships with others and the universe. Its depth is exceptional. Dostoevsky, Tolstoy Chekhov and others are in a different league than Hugo, Dickens or Balzac. Before Tolstoy, no-one described the process of dying in literature (in "Death of Ivan Iliych"). Before Dostoevsky, no-one penetrated the depth of human psyche to its very core. Tarkovsky was a pioneer of cinema of symbols. Obscurity of his films is intentional because life itself cannot be expressed in simple concepts and images.
@user-vn2on9tz9g
@user-vn2on9tz9g Жыл бұрын
@@MK-lm6hb Tolstoy is remarkable for describing in "The death of Ivan Ilyich" the absolute vanity of Ivan Ilyich's materialistic endeavours in life in quite realistic manner(for me as a reader), that's why I prefer more such writers like Tolstoy, in whose works it is more deliberately shown and told author's thought and his ideas, while being escorted by the art of images, in Tarkovsky I can see the opposite situation, the images are more important than the desire to express ideas and make them understandable. I get, what you're trying to say, it's more of my view of art and the place of Tarkovsky in it.
@MK-lm6hb

@@user-vn2on9tz9g The essential question is whether reality can be understood and explained in clear concepts. I personally think that it cannot. We do not have an unmediated access to reality. I would even go further and say that there is no objective reality and that it exists only in our minds. Reality is a mental creation. I personally value more imagination than empirical observation. I'm not Russian but I find "craziness" of Russian literature quite appealing. Take Oblomov, for example. He asks a fundamental question of why do anything when you can do nothing. Or Chekhov who suggests that there is not much difference between existing and not existing. Or Dostoyevsky who in "Zapiski iz podpolya" does not want to accept that 2+2=4. French and British literature are banal when compared with Russian literature. Only Germans can be as crazy and irrational as Russians. Tarkowsky is quintessentially Russian. His imagination is typically Russian. He sees the world as other Russians saw it before him. Stalker is "urodivy", God's fool, who is also present in Dostoevsky' "Idiot" and "Brothers Karamazov" (Alyosha) and as Pierre in Tolstoy's "War and Peace". Russian irrationalism has a sinister aspect and makes Russians prone to see the world in apocalyptic, eschatological, millenarian and Manichean categories. That's why they are susceptible to charlatans like Rasputin and ... Putin. Many Russians now think that they are a nation of bearers of God (богоносец), attacked by the satanic West whose aim is to destroy Holy Russia. It is an interesting question to what extent Russian art is responsible for making Russians irrational and anti-Western.
@user-vn2on9tz9g
@user-vn2on9tz9g Жыл бұрын
@@MK-lm6hb I've always been asking myself, what is the social responsibility or conscience of the art towards people, you are right, that reality is quite flexible thing and it's determined by the consciousness of the person, perceiving it. So I came to the point, that for me is more important task of the art is to show the example of good and bad and to transmit the feelings in simple manner, understandable for the majority of people in order to help them in a way rather than explore the depths of consciousness perception. Tolstoy expressed these thoughts in his work "What is the art?", it's probably changed my attitude to the art in general. These eschatological thoughts, in my opinion, are inseparable from church, ecclesiastical literature, they mostly influenced Dostoevsky, I think, and of course it influenced Russian philosophy, where Putin and all these Dugin and Dugin like guys took these "new ideology" ideas from in order to shape the society against the West. It's interesting, but I also see German literature closer to Russian than any other European, English and especially French are extremely Western, what authors do you see as "crazy and irrational" as Russian ones? P.S. if it's not a secret, what is your nation? Where are you from?

His disciple, Sokurov, is missing, too. However, it would be unfair to single out Russians as particularly ignorant of their cinema. I'm quite certain that not many Americans would mention Sirk, Cassavetes and Altman as being among their greatest directors. Or Malick whose films are clearly influenced by Tarkovsky.

And don't forget that there were only few persons interviewed in this video. For Tarkovsky i'll reccomend Stalker also, based on Strugatskie brothers novel. BTW Sokurov is not so popular cause of his artistic language: too radical and difficult to understand for mass culture. But Tarkovskiy is still popular. And i have to mention Eisenstein, soviet innovator who discovered the basic rules of filmmaking and cinematography language.
