What Isolation Transformer Do You Recommend For My Boat?

"Hey Jeff," emails Gary, "I have an Ocean Alexander and I am installing an isolation transformer. I have 30A and 50A service onboard. Which make do you recommend?"

Good morning, How is the size needed determined? Is it based on shore power amperage(30 or 50) on the supply side or watts needed on the usage side? Victron makes 2000watt and 3600watt versions….and larger.

I just installed a Mastervolt Mass GI 3.5 on my boat, which is the smallest they have, but enough for me. 3500VA on 230V. The unit is CE and ABYC compliant and weights just 6 kg (13,2lb). If you need more power, upgrade to the bigger version (double power, just 10kg /22lb) or switch in parallel. (I choose Mastervolt for the Masterbus. The Victron units are much heavier.)

Will the Victron Isolation Transformer - 7000W - 230V - 50-60 Hz accept 240vac split phase input/output?

Hello Jeff, we have a 1987 Egg Harbor. I am installing a Victron 3600 auto Isolation Transformer. It will be mounted approx 10 to 12 feet from the power cord inlet on the boat. What wire/ cable should I use to wire it in , both from inlet to transformer, and out of transformer to load? Also, should I wire in a cooling fan and venting.The unit will be in an enclosed space. Thank you fo you help. I really love your videos, so much information. That’s again, Dick Roloson.

He Jeff, thanks for all the content you provide. Awesome! luckily, I installed a Charles Isolation Transformer on my Boat a few years ago. I understand they are no longer available. My question for you is about the different shore power Amperages. Wouldn’t he have to Install a Isolation Transformer an on each shore power plug? Thanks Jeff

Normally, we see dedicated isolation transformers for each shore power inlets, matched to input current.

Hi, ASEA power systems has isolation transformer that looks exactly the same, has same footprint. You should check that out.

Jeff, I've been looking for an isolation transformer (240V, 50A service capable) over the past few months, but unfortunately Charles Marine has discontinued their line of marine products. Is there another company that you would suggest?

What’s the difficulty with eu trafos, what do you mean marine certified, certified by which party and is that a requirement and approved? Thanks for the video.

you should check ASEA power systems. They have marine grade products. Thier isolation transformer looks exactly the same as Charles, has same footprint.
