Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

Creating systems to avoid burnout is a HUGE deal. I've also found that creating my own structure (like you have in school) really helped me!

A 95% confidence interval is the same as a p-value of 0.05, which means that there is a 5% chance that the observed difference is due to random chance and not a true population difference.

I think this is one of the best videos I've ever watched about being a data scientist, with all real aspects! I'm also a data scientist in one of the top tech companies and it took me quite while to understand there is no better way than embracing uncertianty & ambiguity in DS space and communicate it clearly rather than feeling yourself insufficient in your skills all the time. I was so overwhelmed and almost burnout till my awakening around these topics, it's super supportive the watch this video, thank you so much for sharing Tina

Hi Tina. I am right now studying my ug in Electronics and Communication currently in 3rd year. And even before I joined for ug .I wanted to go for data science for pg. But recently my anxiety is getting the best hold on me which makes me worried if I am best fit for the course anymore. Seeing your videos and your hardwork I envy you lot. A 95% confidence interval means that the area of the probability distribution that lies at the right/left/middle of your decision boundaries accounts for 0,95. That means that 95% of all possible outcomes will fall in that area, therefore you say that there's a 95% chance of happening what you predict/hope/bet.

95% confidence interval means "if i do this experiment infinite times, 95% of the time i will get a confidence interval from the data that contains the true parameter"

This is 100% correct. But not sure how useful this will be to communicate to people who don’t speak math. Repeating experiments infinite times, does only make sense to mathematicians, “in the limits.” CIs are really a difficult concepts to explain. Compare this with HDI…

95% confidence interval --> if there is no relationship between notifications and purchasing, there is a 5% chance that you observed what you see just by chance. If we think this number is really small it strongly suggests that the idea that there is no relation between notifs and purchasing is wrong (pls tell me if im off the mark so i can learn thank u)

On the right track, but this is an explanation of p-values. You may have a tight 95% CI around 0, meaning that you are confident that the relationship is practically 0.

It's a tricky then! In one of previous videos you've told, that it's very important to do a marketing for a given model. Aaand bosses may (possibly lol) not like words like "maybe", "perhaps" etc.

do i need to master statistics fundamentally ? like prior posterior distribution , gradient functions, likelihoods, even logarithmic and differential . with all those mathematic notation. or do i just need to know the basics then use a readily available library ?

Matter of fact, question for ya'll. Does it sound like my head is in agood place to start learning this skillset? I sucked at math most of my life, until I took stats for the second time in college and from there I loved stats. I've always understood mathematical concepts, just sucked at doing the math by hand with formulas. Data science is kind of intimidating bc I have no tech background rn, but appealing because of the explanatory power of what I would learn and how I basically get to be in perpetual school mode.

From personal experience, the following things are more important than your current skills: 1. your *personal reasons* for wanting to learn data science (e.g. you love learning new things, combining them with what you already know, and using your knowledge and, possibly, your team's knowledge to solve real world problems); 2. your *mindset* (understand that learning data science will take longer and will be more challenging than you think) 3. your *determination* (i.e. your commitment to not giving up when you feel you've hit an insurmountable wall or when you start questioning your abilities) Not only are those three things more important than your current skills, they are a prerequisite to improving said current skills and to gaining the skills you'd like to have. 😊 There's nothing in your comment that makes me doubt your ability to learn data science. As long as you're sure that's the career you want, go for it. If you're still unsure, do a bit more research into what data science is all about, and decide then. Best wishes to you. 😊

7:16 95% in a confidence interval means if we repeat the experiment 100 folds, we will get the same mean result in 95 of 100 experiments (Im not fluent in english and try to answer also to improve my english :D)

95% confidence interval means that out of 100 values we are confident or sure that 95 values of the total data will be precise. That is we are confident that the 95% of results we end up with are sound and the rest 5% is just uncertainty of the accuracy of result.

In layman terms 95% confidence interval is nothing but you are 95% sure of the result (not exact def but the outer layer idea) and getting error is has only 5% chance which is due is randomness

95% CI, also commonly known as “within the margin of error”; people think it tells you the range of plausible values of your estimate. But it actually tells you which values you can not rule out using the hypothesis test with a false-positive rate of 5%. This is the reason why the size of the 95% depends on the exact test you use. This would be not the case, if the 95% CI was actually “plausible values.” For those, you may want to use HDI using a Bayesian approach. (Taught advanced stats at PhD level)

True observation, but wrong interpretation. That’s what we want the 95%CI to be. But it is not. If you want that you need the Bayesian HDI.

95% confidence interval means you can be 95% sure the real answer will be in the data. It's been a while since stats, but I think you would be using this to tell if the p-value or t-value is the true p or t value determining whether results are significant.
