Good thesis! But the "there is hope" part still needs some work. The regulators regulated themselves out of the loop a long time ago. We might need to take care of the climate and the environment a bit, we have a small war problem and a small poverty problem and the key skill of the people making the relevant decisions is tax avoidance. That I bankrupt moron can now play around with open source software instead of eating something fills me with only small amounts of hope.

just like you said earlier, I did get inspired more about AI. One thing it does is to ring disruption of the current labor force and creates more means of employment. So, as humans what we need to do is to become proactive and learn.

James Watson who received Nobel price for discovering structure of DNA once promoted moratorium on genetic engineering... that is until he became involved with his own biotech company. Billionaires are not immune to hypocrisy. Money seem to trump everything. By the way James Watson and his buddy Francis kinda "stole" data that lead them to their discover from Rosalind Franklin.

tbh, i feel life any jobs even judge and doctor can be replaced. because a profession consist of knowledge and skill which both of these can be replaced by ai and robotics. ai replace knowledge and analytical then robotics complemented by ai can replaced skill based jobs. it's just a matter of time at this point.

I am so glad to live in the times of rotting late stage capitalist dystopia where decades of attacks on our rights are finally culminating in more scams under the guise of improved living standards through technology. Government successfully provides welfare for the billion dollar corporations (ie covid), while endlessly debating whether educated college graduates deserve a fraction of their loans forgiven. I am in a tech field myself and I feel extremely uncomfortable with the future of working on something that will displace me and my friends in non-tech areas. At least if I felt that this got rid of menial labor, I would gladly work for it. Instead, we are all in the race to the bottom to please the few that will make the buck without any second thoughts about everything else. This is an ideal recipe for a blowback of systemic proportions.

I love this video but comparing UBI to trickle down economics is a bit weird and dismisses UBI's actual benefit. Trickle down economics was a scam created by a ghoul while UBI is a scientifically tested social program that needs to be implemented as the question of human labor capital comes into question. with that being said, you are right. The wealthy aren't going to just give their money away out of the goodness of their hearts. There is more that needs to be done to ensure a safety net after the upcoming shift. I also love that you mentioned open source and how open source AI is the Move too!

9:42 Universal Basic Income is a bad idea because it disincentivises work and devalues currency. A Negative Income Tax maintains work incentives better than guaranteed income programs, which have a 100% marginal tax rate, reducing subsidies by $1 for every $1 earned - especially because it wouldn't require the rich to pay more taxes. I recommend reading Milton Friedman's "Capitalism and Freedom" where he explains the five benefits of the negative income tax: 1. A negative income tax provides cash directly to individuals. 2. Targets poverty through income. 3. Can replace all existing support programs with a universal one. 4. Potentially costs less due to lower administrative expenses. 5. Avoids market distortions unlike minimum wage laws or tariffs. If the break-even income were $3000. For a family of four with $4000 income, they'd pay tax on $1000. A family with $2000 income would receive $500, as the negative income tax (NIT) rate is 50%. A family with no income would get a $1500 subsidy.

Yes, Every time a new general-purpose-technology is introduced, new jobs are created. But the height of hurdles for those jobs also increased. How many people do you think will be able to understand AI enough to get a job in this field? Not very many. Heck, even those new jobs will be automated very soon after they are introduced, and it is a vicious cycle. And as AI gets smarter and more capable each time, the cycle become shorter each time. To the point where it beyond our own level of intelligence.

New tech creates new jobs by making things cheaper so consumers purchase more of it. For example, in 1850 we moved dirt with shovels and wheelbarrows. One man with a backhoe can do the work of a few teams of men with shovels. But we move so much more dirt today. The amount of earth that's moved for roads, backyard pools, driveways, parking lots, etc. would never have been attempted in 1850. In 1996, an online photo album had to be created by someone with coding skills. Today, preteens easily make one in a few minutes with a phone and social media apps. The process is largely automated. The person who wrote the code in 1996 is no longer needed. But that doesn't mean that nobody writes code today. In 1996, almost no one had an online photo album. Today, it's hard to find people who don't. The government even uses our online photo albums to keep tabs on us. In other words, the product got way cheaper and customers bought way way more of it.

This video came so close to getting it. None of the discussion of "open AI" pointed out how any of the open models were actually doing good things - just "cool" things. It's good because it's open? I mean, that's better than closed, but but this is still boosterism for technology that we mostly do not need and will mostly harm us in the hands of capitalists. (There are legitimately good uses for LLM tech, but most of them are very nerdy.)

Tina, forgive my harsh criticism in this comment but don't act like your actions and those of many others tech content creators like you are not part of the problem. Since GPT became popular you guys are constantly publishing video about how to jump on the AI train and that us devs should take any job opportunity in this field to not fall behind, not taking in consideration that any progress in AI is making a person like me and you jobless with heavy difficulties on re-entering the job market. Only now you came up with a critique that maybe maybe we shouldn't continue to look to this bane (because this is in fact, to the wast majority of tech careers) with a naive heart and follow every stupid bs Musk, Altman, Bezos, Zuckerberg and few others are telling us to refrein us from stopping them, only to throw everything out of the window with a questionable sponsor. I mean, what game are you trying to play here? Yes, can't deny that your advice to contribute into open source AI project can be a valid alternative to move the monopoly away from those f*kers I mentioned above but these AI projects needs training that is coming from work stolen from professionals anyway. There NO WAY you can put this AI thing to be ethical, in ANY case. You said it well that those guys are not having our interests at heart and that's why I think that this technology should be just shut down without a second guess and that you guys who have a huge platform and influence to speak must take a stance soon or later, if you have any sense of ethics and personal principles. We are talking of people lives, not stupid React pet project to put on a portfolio to show off that we can code, for fuck sake

Most of my conversations with Bard (excuse me, "Gemini") for the last week have amounted to me asking it a question about a fact, and it telling me that I need to look it up on my own. That's following months of me telling it when it has made factually erroneous statements or given bad advice. AI has been a scam for sixty or seventy years. No surprise that it's still a scam. No, machines cannot "think like a human." They aren't, and cannot ever be, even close. Part of the reason is that human thought is a consequence of the way human brains are constructed. That's why we have emotions, but machines do not. That's why we have thought and consciousness, but machines do not. AI is, at best, just an uncomprehending parrot. It would have been nice if it could at least look up factual information when I need it.
