Amrou Al-Kadhi, also known as Glamrou is a writer, drag performer, filmmaker and author. Their memoir, Life as a Unicorn: A Journey from Shame to Pride and Everything in Between is out now. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
In this special episode, we return to a conversation we first had with Glamrou back in February when they talked to Krishnan about their challenge to merge their queerness with their Islamic heritage, going to Eton and getting into drag.
And we catch up with them again to hear about how lockdown has affected them and their reaction to the growing debate on transgender people and Black Lives Matter.

Ultimately, we are here for an incredibly short time. Be yourself and let others be themselves, surely. Patently, we are all not like this, but therein lies the existential beauty of it. I often think that the haters, consciously or sub, witness a side of themselves they dislike in others; hence the perceived threat, parried with vitriol. Patently a confident, highly intelligent human: no question. So you dislike what, exactly? Go on, be honest, it's your reflection, isn't it. Oh, yes it is. It is. It is, you know (ad nauseum). Tis! (Had to get in the last word!) Thumbs downers? Just kids really, ain't they. Bell ends.

@@cxarhomell5867And you need to realizs that we're all humans, and such ardent lust for control of others expression of faith is a desire as well. So what if the "womanly" dress you callously termed as such is actually a masculine one and has been done for generations and not once did it make them question their sexuality?

seven proxies Nah it’s very brave. He’s standing in something he believes when he knows half the world would hate him for it. He doesn’t care and he gonna do it anyway. Media don’t even have anything to do with that considering they are just now starting to show people like him in the media late this century.

@@cxarhomell5867 No, it is not haram. You have misunderstood or been wrongly inducted to believe al-Qur'an forbids homosexuality. It never specifically does (*this is not the sin of Lut's people !), the prophet never forbade it specifically, and of course the prophet also had mukhannathun friends / servants. It is not haram. The Islamic world has been vibrantly full of this stuff for hundreds of years. Homophobia is a patriarchal phenomenon, you suffer from it because you have been brainwashed with patriarchy. That is not islam.

@@lifeisnotaproblem Yes, it is haram. I have not been misunderstood, as the Qur'an prohibits sodomy and homosexuality. it clearly states it in the Surah Verses. The Prophet Out (as) has been told to leave this area and follow Allah's footsteps. It is haram. Islam has been affected by this and I have followed it bit by bit. It is a phenomenon that islam has. It is islam.

It’s interesting interview but his/her understanding of Islam is rudimentary. So, am not surprised what teachers inculcated about Islam traumatized him. But you cannot be a Muslim unless you understand the most critical elements of the faith that make it pragmatic religion many profess in world. Am glad he pointed out mental illness because its recovery is never easy. His explanation of biological differences indicates his source of confusion. But I hear his philosophical underpinnings which don’t explain biological issues here.

I'm a Muslim and I'm not gay, but I support you. Allah doesn't make mistakes and he created you the way you are. Islam should show more love, but most Muslims are full of hatred as you can see in the comments. Most Muslims here don't prove that Islam a religion of peace, but a religion of war, verbal insults, discrimination and hatred.

@@layan_0530 The LGBT says that Allah adapts himself to the culture. In 600 AD, Allah set rules according to their culture, but in 2023 Allah supports LGBT. The prophet Loth story was valid for the 600 AD culture.

You can be gay and Muslim, but walking away from the truth is walking away from heaven is not successful at the end. You can have both. Your trauma is not a real representative of truth of Islam, Islam is perfect Muslims are not. No one can talk their way into heaven.
