HE IS NOT HUMAN, that’s how! Actual answer is that a good number of his books were 5 - 50% written years ago. He has said that during his Mormon mission, forget what they call that, and his time at Brigham Young University, he had would write notebooks full of ideas and drafts of a lot of this stuff. Some were only scratching and some had entire sections written out. He is a guy who actually wrote down all the ideas he had in his free time and is just insane enough to want to expand on them. I’ll be honest, I find him kinda hit or miss and think he get the dicksuck treatment from the fantasy community, like David Lynch and R.R, both good writers who I think get too much praise sometimes. BUT GOD DAMNIT IF I DONT RESPECT BRANDERSON! I may not always like his works, but fuck me if he doesn’t know the CRAFT of WRITING.

I see people talking about how he must have ghost writers and stuff. It's funny, because I could totally see how you would think that, but no. It's not even that he's all that fast, he's just hella efficient. He spends like 8-10 hours a day everyday writing, non-stop. When he gets writers block, he just starts writing something else. He's also outlined large portions of the Cosmere like 2 decades ago. All these combined with a large team of editors and lore-experts makes him one of the most prolific writers in the industry.
@SandraNLN
@SandraNLN 10 ай бұрын
Exactly! I certainly remember reading once (could be inaccurate) that before he even became a professor, as well as during his off-hours as one, he would write pages upon pages of notes and outlines for the Cosmere and had so many stories already pretty much fully planned out by the time he started publishing. Unlike Rothfuss, it's a lot easier to finish novels when you know where they're going and how to end them. Rather than piddle around trying to write an ending /after/ you have the pressure of established fans with expectations telling you to get over your writer's block and just hurry up already. Sanderson is a super nerd for the universe he created, it's obvious he doesnt have ghostwriters. Just a great editing team that can blast through his manuscripts and clean everything up to get published.

So, fun fact: Research shows that writer's block is correlated to depression, and correspondingly there is a direct opposite of writer's block correlated to mania, called _hypergraphia._ Which is when you literally can't stop compulsively writing shit down. What I'm trying to say is: All of you feeling unproductive compared to all these extremely prolific writers, keep in mind: It's not you. Those guys probably just have an actual mental condition that happen to make them obscenely good at writing novels, that's all.

Yep. Writing 450,000 words will take about 187.5 hours for the average writer typing on a keyboard 12 hours a day = 15 days 6 hours a day = 31 days Not barring writers block, days off, and doesn't account for technical issues etc. So therefore 4 books = 124 straight days of writing at 6 hours per day. So unless you do nothing else but write for 124 days straight without even one day off, you can probably assume he has help.

I personally love Brandon Sanderson's writing. My friend introduced me to the Stormlight Chronicles a few years ago (right around when the first book came out) and I devoured them. Absolutely loved them. I stopped reading for a while, then I pledged a LOT to his kickstarter campaign. Since I'm going to be getting a "year of Sanderson" I figured I should probably read some other Sanderson. So I read the Skyward series (still a book to come) then the first Mistborn Series. Then the Reckoners Series. Now I'm reading the second Mistborn series, and I have another series set aside to read on vacation. I particularly like the humanity of the characters, their own self-doubts and confusion, but I also like that they rise to heroism when the situation demands it. Most of his books end with a moment of heroic awesome. And the best part is... there's always another book to read. I'm not waiting for 11 years for Winds of Winter, yet secretly knowing it's never going to come out, because GRRM is done with SoIaF. (Unlike Wheel of Time, Sanderson won't be finishing that series after GRRM dies; he's said he never would, because the writing style and story type is too different.)

It's hard enough knowing you'll never make money on the thing you love that you spend every sane moment of free time outside of your full time job and life on. But of course you would also be mocked for finishing it because it is only one complicated, complex thing and not seven all at once. For everyone who would say such a thing to someone, in the face of so much hard work and defiance through adversity. Rethink before you type such a worthless, heartless, bullish comment. This comment should not be someone's reward for all their hard work. If you are on the bus, does it still matter that you had to run to catch it? Disgraceful attitude. If quantity is all you're after, nobody can compete with an ai. Just go play with one of those mindless things and myob.

this is why you should read series from dead authors. every time I decide to get into a series I usually find out the author has passed. Robert Jordan, Le Guin, Lloyd Alexander, Joe Dever...

I fell in love with Sanderson's work in 2020. I like to read but find I have more time for audiobooks as I can listen to them at work and on my commute. Unfortunately, this means I can finish the way of kings in two weeks when taking my time and very quickly finished all of stormlight, mistborn ( era 1 and 2 ), elantris, warbreaker, the secret histories and some other random non cosmere books ( calamity I think? Steelheart? That was Brandon right?) And have been relistening to them and introducing my wife to them and listening to them with her on long drives.

Martin wrote at a brisk pace for the first 3 ASOIAF books, one every two years. He slowed once he attracted a major (and by now, quite toxic) fan base and ground to a halt once GoT went on air.
@mrgreatauk
@mrgreatauk 2 жыл бұрын
@@zetazimmer4769 I don't think George has a toxic fan base really... Most fans love his books, but are just a bit disappointed that a series they got very invested in won't be finished, and that they were misled so much. Only a very small minority are flaming him.
@zetazimmer4769
@zetazimmer4769 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrgreatauk Yeah but there's a larger culture of shitting on Martin that is clearly contributing to the writer's block. I just wish there was more compassion for creative people.
