What It's Like To Serve In South Korea's Mandatory Military Service

South Korea requires all of its male citizens to serve in the military for two years. Here's what that experience is like.
Footage courtesy of Goyang TV, 2012
Following is a transcript of the video.
The hardest part was when I and my group had to go into this gas-filled room.
My name is Gene Kim, and I served in the South Korean military for 2 years.
The law requires every male to serve the military, and it is extremely hard to get out of it. If you purposely evade the military duty, you will get jail time.
The service is mandatory mainly because our relationship with North Korea. After things got intensified after the Korean War, there was a need for an active force for the South Koreans, so the military can always be ready.
I served the Korea military between the years of 2009 and 2011. Before the military, I was living in New York. I decided to go because I had to get it over with it at some point.
At the time I did my military service, I hated it.I just hated every moment being in there, trapped in that isolated society. And I just waited for my time to pass.
I haven't seen a single person who really wanted to be there, who was enthusiastic to be there. People generally want to avoid the military because, I think, of the forcefulness of it. Compared to the US, where the military is voluntary, and you can pursue it as a career, in Korea, 2 years of service is mandatory, and everyone is forced to do it.
You're living your free life and then suddenly isolated from the rest of the society. You have no contact. You can’t fill your cell-phone addiction there. And you're basically sacrificing 2 years of your youth for the nation.
So, on the first day when you enter the military. As soon as you enter this training base, you meet these instructors that train you for 5 weeks on from there. They intentionally try to intimidate you, try to scare you, in order to make you into a soldier.
This 5 weeks of training was one of the most intense experiences I had. You’re not even a private at this moment. You are a trainee. The training is very intense. You are yelled at constantly. You don't have a voice there. You can only do what you're told to do and nothing else.
You learn to move very fast. When you’re ordered something, you have to run to get it, you have to run to do it. And if you hesitate, you get picked on for that. If you get around 5 minutes of rest, then you're happy with that. You re-learn things that you thought you already knew. There's a certain way to eat. There's a certain way to stand. There’s a certain way to talk to people. There's a certain way to do everything in the military.
One of the most memorable trainings that I did was this training called "화생방 훈련." Which is to prepare soldiers to defend against a chemical attack. The hardest part was when I and my group had to go into this gas-filled room.
And you enter the room with your gas mask on, and there's also an instructor there with a gas mask on. He eventually orders you to put off the gas mask. And when you're exposed to this gas it doesn't have long-term effects on you, but anywhere that's exposed would hurt like hell. It feels like a thousand needles just pinching on to you and grabbing onto you.
And when you inhale this gas, it feels like you're suffocating. Basically, you can’t breathe. It's just chaos in that tiny room. Everyone’s grabbing onto each other. Everyone’s rolling on the floor. There was this one guy. He ran to the door trying to get out, but there was a guard there who prevented that. And it was total chaos.
After your 5 weeks of training, you’re relocated to your battalion. So, this is your home from now on. You would stay there for your private to sergeant life. From day one to the end of your service, you hear a lot about North Korea from the officials.
They designate the North Korean military as our enemy. This was the first time when I learned that North Korea has invaded South Korea even after the truce multiple times.
I don't know if it's because I've been brainwashed, but now I'm convinced that they have the capability and will to do a lot of damage to the Korean Society. There's always a potential that the North Koreans can Invade us and the military's trying to prepare for that.
Looking back at the experience, I think I gained a few things. There's a saying in the military, "If you can't make it work, make it work." I learned that if you really put your will and just do it, then I can really achieve...I feel like I can achieve anything.

@BaneOfPhillipBurnell Wrong. You can go through your entire military career without going to war and still be a veteran when you get out. If you're a veteran of a war of any sort you put the name of the war before "veteran". That's why we call WW2 veterans, WW2 veterans and Vietnam war veterans, Vietnam war veterans...
@flyingsac
@flyingsac 3 жыл бұрын
@BaneOfPhillipBurnell Everyone who has ever served in the armed forces with an honourable discharge are legally veterans. But to respect the ones who have actually been in war they just call themselves ex-soldiers.

@@billburr5881 Of course not but I never said we force women aswell to join because they have right whether to enter or not enter that field its not just one gender (I’m not a radical feminist) . Also how is you’re question related what I said? Did I ever say we should manadtorize women aswell and reverse the roles? I was only stating an observation there could be a few women who volunteered in the army and also maybe become veterans because their government allows women to join voluntarily (I’m not a feminist) just stating a fact they could volunteer not force or mandatorize like the men . I was not implying they should reverse the roles and of course that would be unfair . It would be unfair if women were not allowed to join the army at all cause there are some women who are brave to fight just like men . Anyone with limited and unfair roles is not good because they need to prosper and work together to achieve success and its not just only one gender in a specific role who can do the job they will new brains and character to help the ones who are have limited mindsets

I am a man who finished military service in Korea. I am a fourth year in reserve and when I was active, I was a soldier in charge of administrative affairs in the unit, and the task was the operation of our division. While serving as a soldier for 21 months in the military, there were many difficulties and hardships, but there were many pleasant and happy memories. In particular, I still can't forget the performance of the military band and the cheers of the juniors who welcome our company when they return to the barracks after marching in the training center. At this moment, I would like to express my gratitude once again to the Korean Armed Forces Soldier who protects my country by dedicating his youth throughout Korea.

I remember my first weekend in Korea. I’m an American, walking around, admiring all the sights, sounds, and scenery. This elderly man walks up to me, thanked me for my service and welcomed me to Korea. He told me all these stories about his time in the military, all the beautiful places to visit, and really admired Americans in the military for their commitment. In America, you get that sort of treatment when others know you’re military, but you really have to stick out. I obviously stick out, being i was an American, in Korea. But as I sat and talked with him, the more I learned about their history, and just how much their military and security matters to them. They have to be strong because they have no choice. We have the luxury of having a voluntary service. They do not. And while they may not like their mandatory service, I know deep down they understand the rationale for it. And I think it’s just as respectable.

Military training hasn't done a whole lot of impact on singers any ways. It's about their ability (which is their voice). So singers and actors are the least affected by it, sometimes they get even more famous. However athletes on the other hand essentially get ruined post military service. They build muscles where it's not needed and lose skills along the way. Hence, many athletes consider military service the end cap of their sports career.

And yes BG, you made it clear, women makes shorter time than man, in Israel. Something else, since Israel had so many war with their so called "brother" Ismael descendants or muslim religion, in case of another future war, to my understanding, Israel's military can call up conscripts of 500,000 people in 24 hours and 1 million in 72 hours.

@Nari1102 in Russia we have this kind of mandatory military service but for one year. Regardless, I think they take my life and time away from me and other young people. Additionally, they have nothing to give us instead of the stolen freedom. No one young man treating themselves with respect and not relating their life with the military should get through this. In my case, I postponed the service for 6 months in December. Now I'm studying to evade the army and go abroad, living far from Russia till I turn 27 years old. As I stated previously, the military is an authorized violence group in the country. One out of 100 Koreans is in the military. In a group of 600,000 people, as I agree with you, various & many incidents and accidents could occur. However, the frequency is very low compared to the general society. Now days, a mental desertion or a single sexual misconduct becomes a social issue via all sorts of social media. If the same thing happens in society, it would be buried in the sand. What you described in this reply, I believe, not all abuses you may experience in the military because ROK military has a well constructed report & appeal system. It doesn’t imply we shouldn’t improve the military abuse prevention system. But even the USFK, which is a developed country, has a higher crime rate than ROK military’. If that so, it's not grateful to downgrade and denigrate the military whose royalty to the nation and their honor of protecting the people. Thus, I would like to recall one phrase of the scripts from the “Descendent of the Sun”. “A military uniform is a shroud. When we die for our nation in the nameless front-lines, those sites become our graves and our uniforms turns out our shrouds. We should wear the military uniforms with that determination. Once we do, be honorable at every moment. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be.”

Singapore also has mandatory military service for male citizens. If you have this sort of program in the US the people would go nuts about rights I reckon.
@chaosXP3RT
@chaosXP3RT 7 жыл бұрын
The US does have a similar sort of program. Its called Selective Service (aka the Draft). All male citizens have to sign up at 18. The US military gets its soldiers from volunteers right now, but if the US were ever to go to war, it can activate the Selective Service and it forces men to join the military. The last time this was done was in the Vietnam war and it did cause a lot of people to go nuts. Men refused to sign up and got thrown in prison. There was a big controversy last year over whether women should be forced to sign up for Selective Service too, but it didn't happen. Women can volunteer, but can't be forced in a time of war.

Maybe you guys are always the first & quickest to criticize East Asians because of the Mughal (i.e., "Mongol" Dynasty) of India which was founded by Mongoloids? The Taj Mahal that so many Indians are so proud of was actually built by the Mongol Mughals. And now China has been a superpower for at least a decade; China is already the second largest economy in the world while India's economy is not even as big as France's lmao! However, India is second place in the world when it comes to highest murder rate. China builds the world's first quantum communications satellite while India is still 3rd world.

All the more respect to super famous ppl like BTS for insisting on completing their military service, even though they probably could have gotten exemption due to their music achievements and cultural/financial contributions to their country. Kpop idols are also known to get more harassment and a harder time in the military, as well as invasion of privacy instances (ie. photos taken of them for blackmail or sell to the press). So I'm sure they were dreading it too, but said it was their honor to serve their country.

Some have already challeged the military law for violating the Constitution which says 1) every PERSON has a duty to guard our borders 2) military duty MUST NOT be a disadvantage for the bearer... but the verdict was girls at the army? pfff nah shut up. The contradiction is deep and also involves alternative services for those with health issues (of course men only.) Bonus fact: once, the men who finished serving the military were given a small-but-influential advantage when they applied for civil service jobs. Then "feminists" got the media and now(don't remember since when) absolutely nothing. 2 of your best years robbed, significant risk of injuries trauma etc which often falls on yourself.

Also traditionally pc online games were popular compared to console games.

@@wondo94 not the koreans only, all asians are like this. I have some competition experience against asian players from japan and china. They are biologicly better at this, like black people better at running, they are better in esports and everything that recuirse good and fast brain work. They learn faster to do things better than everyone else, they have a strong teamplay and discipline in thier blood, they work as a whole thing. Even if the players in the team are not skilled enough, they are frcking hard to defeat. That's pretty much everything why asians are good at videogames. Meh, they are better at everything, i guess, except physical strength.

Ofc not they’ll do I’m guessing like community service? Obviously they’ll get trained for situations that might happened just in case but there’s no war (technically) a lot of artist have said that the training is easy what’s hard is that they get harassed 24/7

I served in Korea in 1968. Sometimes called the second Korean War and I can tell you that the North has indeed numerous times invaded the South. These were relatively small incursions but we had to be constantly on alert. Walter Bonnesteel was the commander of UN forces in Korea and made sure that Korean troops were responsible for Korea's defense. I give him a lot of credit for giving Korean troops the confidence to do the job. ROK troops were among the best fighting men I ever encountered anywhere. Read about the Tiger Division in Vietnam. You have a lot to be proud of.

I think people could get a lot from a revised mandatory service from ages 16/18 to 20. It would be different in that it’s like the national guard but with life skills training and productive discipline training. It would be a side thing that comes along with schooling, and with free/mandatory education, we could produce a fine tuned and mentally healthy next generation of individuals that will expand society further than general, current people.

It doesn't change people. I did 2 years of mandatory conscription, and the people who came in with bad attitudes remained that way throughout and after, and the people who had a good positive attitude also stayed that way. Character doesn't change.

Thats called CS gas, bro. They did it the same for us, too. Burning a couple tablets on hotplates. My fire team partner was so excited to take his stuffy gas mask off that he instinctively took a deep breath when the gas was filling up the room. It was pretty hilarious, actually.
