The bird bobbing its tail in the stream at 5:16 is a Louisiana Waterthrush. The call at the end is a Northern Flicker and not a Pileated Woodpecker as I incorrectly stated.

I met an old dnr guy, and he showed me that if you hold a morel in front of you, you'll be able to see surrounding morels in the brush more easily. After a while, your brain registers the image, and you can see them more clearly.

Last week I went out in the woods morel hunting with my dog. Came back empty-handed but it's never a total loss taking your dog out in the woods, that's a win in and of itself. But just an hour ago I was out mowing my lawn and what did I find in the flowerbed on the east side of my house? Just chillin' with my schipp laurels. A big flush of massive morels. My brother's a chef and he's on his way over right now. I'm gonna be sleeping off a food coma tonight lads.

During morel season I see patches of them when I lay down at night and close my eyes 😂

I found my first morels after I went to the eye doctor and got my eyes dilated. I have terrible eyesight and I was not wearing my glasses because I was wearing sunglasses while my dad and I were taking down our turkey hunting blind. I somehow spotted one, then my dad urged that we look for more. So there I was crawling on the ground trying to find more. We found about 10 of them, so it was well worth it!

There’s a lot of potential in psychedelics, I can’t wait to try any of them mushrooms specifically but it’s just so hard to find a reliable source over here, I’ll be glad if anyone can be of help

They literally grew in my backyard out of the edges of one of my raised garden beds that I used for compost and burnt wood/coal. Right next to remnants of the burnt wood from last fall rhey grew tall and about 7 of them

just today I found my first morel ever! I had so many dreams where I would find them but was unsuccessful since I got into mushrooms in high school. The last learn your land morel video really helped me to be persistent! I had been in a bad space and went to my usual woods to destress and there they were! Taking it as a reminder to not give up

Hiked about an average of 10 miles each time I scouted them this year came back 2 times with about a pound of 14-16 morels each time! I found them near feeder creeks on southwest-facing near the river a week ago. I went out 2 days after a nice rain and found really nice ones, then went back the next day and found perfect ones. The elm leaves are coming out and I'm learning trees better. In the winter it was hard to tell, some of the small poplars look like other trees. Found mine under very small elm trees too, and dead ash. and 3 scattered in the middle of the woods under a poplar. I scored a few oyster mushrooms on a landscaping job I did to. Two nice little clusters, and found a ton of dryad saddle,and a brown puffball

I found hundreds of them in a small area this year. Sycamore was the tree they were growing by and they were allllllllllllllll through the Japanese knotweed down by the river. It was Insane! The soil was basically all worm castings so it was really fertile and rich. I finally found many Jack in the Pulpit plants too.

Last year I started learning about foraging mushrooms and dryad's saddle was my first edible; a year later today, I stumbled upon my first morel mushrooms completely on accident! It was an absolutely thrilling chance encounter. Thanks for all your wonderful and informative videos, they've helped me a ton.

I got into mushroom hunting 5 years ago after stumbling upon a small morel patch, and have been hooked since. My patch produces a small handful every year, but I've not found another patch since. I've focused on trying to find elm trees, and have found some small ones but no larger dead ones. I'll keep trying to find that jackpot. Even when I come up empty on the morel hunt, the consolation is just a nice hike in the woods with my dog. Pretty cool to spot a Pileated woodpecker once in a while too. Love your videos, Adam.

My friend and I found our very first morels last week mostly by accident. We were forest walking in Ontario and looking for mushrooms and spring flowers but we stopped and were chatting and I looked down and not a foot away was a large morel! We found 5 more in the area. It made us so happy! Thanks for the video 😊

I recently learned that morel’s can be found in Japan. A local forager’s channel mentioned finding common morels under elm, oak and apple trees. Some Japanese foraging guides also state that cherry and ginko trees are prime locations. The Japanese name is 編笠茸 (ami gasa take) which I think translates as braided hat mushroom or perhaps fishing net mushroom. I keep a notebook with the names and picture of wild edibles in my area, so hope to be adding this mushroom soon.

Where I live, in Northwestern Ontario, the morel season has just started. We had a a very wet few days and I just came across two on my walk in the forest. Both were in fairly open areas near poplar trees! The nice thing about taking photos with my phone is that it records date and location in lat and long. I am going out today again. This morning, I woke up and had my coffee, I was walking around outside (it's a gloomy rainy day) and in my yard close to where we had an elm cut down recently there's a patch of them growing! I harvested them and I'm currently planning what I'm going to eat them with!

Thank you so much for mentioning the search image in seeking morels. You gave our eyes and brains a picture, the key of what we are looking for. They are the color of the leaf litter, they can be easily missed but the eye / brain connects because of facial recognition as it were.

2021 was the best PA morel season Ive ever had, they were literally popping up everywhere, I was finding them without even trying lol. Now fast forward to 2022 and its April 21st as Im typing this, and I have not found a single one yet. Its off to a very slow start this year for me.

I dont go out too often because I get hives when its hot, but I love watching ppl forage. I always appreciate all your videos they are very informative!

We moved into a house with some wooded areas and I found Morel mushrooms along the driveway. Its so great. Twice as many this year.

Grew to ten years or so living near three golf courses; daily walks through the woods to get to each. Me, along with other kids, would gather lost golf balls and sell them to golfers along the fairways for $.25-.50 each. From that experience, I gained an ability to see the "thing" I searched to find. I was also able to purchase my first, true, BMX bicycle frame and forks at ~$500... This was during the 70's, and I sold a lot of golf balls between the ages of eight to ten... I learned where to look for for hook, or slice, players based on range from the tea box. Point being, slow down, look around, and slow down some more, because your likely to pass by them if you just wander.

Well, I'm in northern MI. There are very, very, VERY few Elms. Some box elms near the rivers. I was out with my dog that's trained to sniff out dried morels and alert. Been raining, and then warmed up to the 60s for two days. Soil temps are over 50 and around 55-60. We walked for hours in a known area that has had morels (general area of a county) through Poplar and Beech woods on a southern facing slope, Maples (booo) and found nothing except a grouse and her nest. Drove a few miles into a clear cut logging area (was cut last fall) that covered a big hill on 3 sides (south, east, west), bottom of said BIG hill was a swampy area with a few Elms, Birch, Poplar, Beech, etc, top of the same hill was a dead apple orchard. Swamp/Hill was on a nasty logging road that was muddy and washed out and needed ground clearance and 4x4 to get through... After 4 hours out, looking around every "good" tree...not a single thing. Nothing. Found a ton of Ramps, found other mushrooms, found bunnies, a ton of pretty flowers, a few plants I didn't recognize, and a flint stone or maybe old arrowhead. I'm outside every day for at least an hour or two or more walking and looking. Never found any in the wild. 1 on the side of the road two years ago in grass under pine, and last year my GF's parents showed me some in their yard...under pine in grass. Always in proximity to people, never in the "wild". I think morels are a myth, and a giant troll on unsuspecting city dwellers from the South/Coastal areas. What tree are they under? Well any tree according to enough people. When do they come out? When its warm, but not too warm, and it has to be wet (so cold in order bc rain to precipitate the air temp has to shift). And of course no one will actually tell you where they get morels from OR show you. They don't really look like any mushroom with a cap, stipe, and gills. Think about it. Its a conspiracy, morels are fake and do not exist.

1:34 I’m pretty new to foraging, but what I’ve learned so far is I can NEVER find what I’m looking for. But I always find what I’m NOT looking for. So learning to identify new things that I find ends up being more productive than actively searching for specific plants or fungi. I found and foraged my first edible mushroom this way, when I stumbled upon some yellow foot chanterelles last year. They were amazing. After years of being scared to try wild fungi, I’m glad I finally got the confidence to try.

To find mushrooms you have to look up to spot the trees that are most productive to produce morels old fella mushrooms king taught me this years ago went from one bag to multiple bags almost immediately best advice I ever received

I love watching your videos. You have made a big influence on my mushroom foraging. The more time I spend in the woods the more I have found, the more tree associations I have found, more wildlife I have found. Just the other day I jumped my first woodcock with two babies. Little early to the spot for the white mushrooms, I have already found the black and grays and since I continually check this area I’m getting better at the timing in association with the plants. Overall, thank you, I love your videos, I can’t wait for the tree ones your doing and hopefully I’ll be able to take your course someday!

So far having a wicked good season. Currently at 70 pounds found!

I havent missed a season in 41 years. I used to average over 100 pounds a season. I've found them in some pretty odd places over the years. Growing straight off of rocks, and cliffs... once, even in the middle of a gravel road. The south facing hills around dead elm trees of any size, or even live apple trees, but elms are the best. The size of the dead or dying elm is not important. My record so far, was over a thousand 6-8 inch tall mushrooms under one massive elm at the head of a valley, that had been recently split by lightning, but my second best tree a few years later, gave me 750 4-6 inch mushrooms under a dead elm that was only 3 inches wide. Peak here in southern Wisconsin, is the end of May. Can't wait. This will be my 42nd season. Everyone tells me I should write a book about them. Maybe I just will.

Yes, the last two weeks in April are best here in western PA. My wife and I found our 1st batch last year on a creek wetland when we weren't even looking, just exploring the area for fishing access. Returned last week and found 33! Came back yesterday and 23 more. You bet we counted them! The comment below is so true; When you see one, stop and look around very carefully. There will be more. I ground one morel up in rainwater and sprinkled the spores all around in my mulched garden areas so maybe I'll find some closer to home next year.

I love your videos, Adam! They’re so inspiring and encouraging. I live in south western Connecticut and have found very few morels over the past 4 years. This is probably because I don’t get out often enough, but also that I don’t know how to find elm trees in my area. I’ve watched several videos on elm tree identification. I’ve searched the Internet and read about them, downloaded local literature from the state website. And after that I really wish there was a better way to learn to identify elms. I think what I need to see is several variations of elm trees at various stages of growth. I also need to see a comparison of them and their bark to the bark of other similar trees, like black locust. We have tons of dead and dying ash trees, and a lot of massive tulip trees. I’ve mostly been searching around tulip and ash trees. No luck. Is it better to search near water like lakes, streams, or swampy wetlands? I have had some luck in a few spots in the Hudson River valley but with the pandemic, these areas are pretty heavily trafficked over the past year. So I think others have been at them before me. Any ideas on how to get better at tree id would be really great. Thanks for your videos. I hope you continue making them!

My niece found one growing along a narrow path in her Ossining yard. She's right off 9 in a busy area, but her yard is host to a wild turkey family, fox, lots of trees and rocks and birds. It was the only one, so she left it alone.

I picked a sack of morels last weekend. My bride floured and sauteed them. Delicious.

Where I am, it's the Sweetgum balls that keep catching my eyes. They look nothing alike straight on but when you're just seeing the ridges of a worn down sweetgum ball in the periphery, it gets me every time.

We live in Eastern Washington and live at 3700ft on a mountain with Douglas fir and pines. I just found a patch of morels growing in some mulch I've had down for a couple of years. I also used to burn in that same area. I didn't harvest any since it was such a small patch of them. As a child we'd gather these mushrooms annually as a food source.

Thank you Adam I finally after FOUR SEASONS did it and succeeded in Finding my first major grouping of morel mushrooms in the wild and that is a major task in N.E. N.J. once we spot one … we have to be Like a good barbecue master, go low and slow, squat down, scan your surroundings, and that is the hardest thing to do, as we are always in a hurry, “SLOW DOWN AND LOOK FOR A LOST DIAMOND RING IN A SHAG CARPET” it’s not going to be easy, but it’s possible

I’ve been hunting for morels since probably 2008 or so and I found my first last year. I agree with you it’s luck, skill and knowledge. The climate just isn’t ‘mushroomy’ as much anymore. It’s hotter and drier!

Normally right after the last freeze or what is traditionally the time of the last freeze in your area is the time to start looking. Red buds and flowering pears are bloomed all over in landscapes and along roads for a week or two before morels pop up. Mayapples have fully opened. Here in northern missouri about April 15 is time to start looking. The season will vary a week or two from year to year and last 3 to 4 weeks here. Bottoms are best but you can find them higher in the forest out of the floodplain or in places you wouldn't expect them. Sometimes you dont have to hike deep into the woods and find them a few feet inside the forest edge next to fields where they get lots of sun. Best to walk creek or river bottoms with elms, cottonwoods, sycamores. If I'm not in a floodplain I just look across the top of the forest and find the giant white sycamores because they stick out and prefer to grow in soil with lots of moisture same as morels.

Couple years ago I found one in the city. Right by the Claremont Colleges. Fascinated ever since.

I have not found d any this year. Found a really nice spot of Dryad Saddles though I will harvest them tomorrow. They are the youngest most fresh I have ever found I am excited.

Hunting schools can very interesting, when you find what you a looking for ! Sometimes it’s is like they appear out of thin air ! Magical at times !

In SW Ontario our season is just starting. I find them in the bush and sometimes along trails. Our season extends into June

Great info Adam, in our part of Central NH we don’t have Elm or Tulip Poplar. We do however have a lot of Ash and Cherry which you discussed in one of your earlier videos. I also know of an old abandoned Apple orchard which we checked out on May 1st but I’m thinking it’s still a bit early for us here in Central NH. I’ll be going back at least once a week until the end of May to hopefully find some. I was turned on to Morels many years ago as a kid hunting them in souther Ohio with my Grandfather but have yet to find any here. As relatively new foragers we really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

I found a grove of elms after 3 days of rain, temperature high reached 60, on a slope, remote location where the neighbors said they had seen them years ago. Nothing. Went back the next week, nothing. Yesterday after more rain, nothing. Peak morel time and I can't find them anywhere:(
