A long talk with my mom about her childhood in the early days. The days before power and water in all homes. And what it meant to her to be raised in those days. Mom is the middle child of 23 children, and was born in 1936

Please thank you mom for sharing her memories, we loved listening. People could learn so much from our elder generation and sadly the skills are passing away as they themselves pass away. I miss my grandmother and great grandmother but have their diaries to look back on. Everyone needs to spend time with the elderly family members and learn an absorb all they share. Thank you for documenting this Mr. Tyson. So blessed to have found your channel. We live in MT in a 1910 farmhouse, and we live 90% 0ff grid and cook on a wood cook stove, that is what heats our home. We have a commercial sized oak icebox for our refrigeration, and we use a 1950 Maytag wringer washer. Simpler times weren't simple, they just look that way looking back, it takes lots of work and devotion to keep a simple farm going.

I’m 51. Growing up with no phones and walking everywhere you went. I never thought to ask for a ride. We were 2 1/2 miles from town and if you wanted.22 shells you grabbed your grass mowing money and took off for town. And a disaster could happen 30 miles away and we never knew. Now something on the other side of the world and we have to worry about it. We were blessed

That’s how I was raised up (we are 7 siblings) with toilet in the back of the house, pulling up water with a bucket from a open well, at times we didn’t had electricity, we had to warm up water on the stove for bathing, we hand washed our clothes, and this was in the ‘80 when I was few years, and went into the early 1990 this way of living. We didn’t had tv 📺 🙏🏼 back then. Best thing ever with no television. Radio we listened to it on Sundays and such. Life in North-Eastern Romania

I am 42 years and live in the capital of Romania, Bucharest, and I don’t have a television as of now.👌🏼 I cannot stand it, with it’s lies and brainwashing. I don’t think I’ll ever own one.... And I don’t think I’ll ever own a dishwasher either. When I’ll move back to the mountains, I’ll be back to hand wash my clothes again, and enjoy the evening at the light of the lamp/candles, as we did and still do back home.

My wife and I host an orphans christmas every year. we would invite folks that have no where to go for Christmas. It was pot luck but we did the turkey and potatoes, turnips and some desserts. What a blast! Then we had a gift exchange that you would take something from home you didn't need and made a gift out of it. What a great idea! I have met so many new friends. What a special time!!

My grandfather raised pigs and cows. My great grandmother was raised by Hoosier pioneers. She would help with a truck Garden getting things out that she needed to can. I can remember large boiling black kettle Under The Apple Tree and helping her can. Thanks for sharing another great and enjoyable video.

Yes, and as others have commented, talks with our parents provide great insight into the past. So many of us, myself included, wish we had spent more time talking about the past … or even better and like you, recording it. My mom passed away at age 94, had a fall and broke her hip. I miss her every single day, I’m 64 and she was my best friend. Of course I miss my dad too, passed at 92. I was thinking only the other day how blessed me and my siblings were to have parents and good parents at that. So many have not had that great benefit and advantage. Just wish I had paid more attention. Great video … as always!

Thanks Jerry this was a valuable life lesson that kids today should hear. Young people today have life so good and they don't even realize it , TV , Wi-Fi , cell phones and the list goes on and on. My 13 year old grand daughter has a $600.00 cell phone and she's on it all day long. That's all she does is text her friends and watch videos. Kids need to learn about their heritage but modern technology has spoiled them, they're out of touch with reality being on the web all the time.

Thank you to GM Tyson and you. I had a very similar childhood. We learnt to entertain ourselves and i believe kids today have missed all the fun. We knew the name of everyone who lived in the houses for at least a half mile block. My saying is . .to go forward we need to go back ...im trying to do what you have done and return to old ways and values... Family .. debt free life Basic home and God. Happiness is not what you have in possessions its the values you hold in your heart. I wished more ppl could understand this.

Did Mom go to a one room schoolhouse? Was it true that goodbye for deceased (viewings) were taken place inside living rooms? Did Mom have to care for siblings growing up since she oldest? Where did she meet her husband and did they have weddings then with parties? Did she know she was having twins? Were you all born at home? Did Mom nurse all the babies or how did she feed you formula? What age and what did her parents die from? So many questions and I lost my Mom two years ago at age 90 and would give anything to have a video such as this. Thank you Jerry! I can think of so many questions! Great video!

This video was awesome! Brought back a lot of memories of my mom,who grew up in wv. No electric,no running water. I remember getting water from the spring and using the outhouse when visiting my grandparents. Their house was heated by the huge black cook stove in the kitchen,and a small potbelly stove in the other room in the downstairs of the house,which was their bedroom and the living room. Two bedrooms upstairs,one for the boys and one for the girls,8 kids. My parents moved to Ohio after the war and my dad built a very small house. He put a bathroom in right before I was born in 1952,in Lordstown ohio. We ate coffee soup also,along with a lot of good meals my mom made,soup beans and ham,vegetables from our garden and blackberries from the woods. I’ve tried to live as simply as possible,canning foods,gardening,making baskets,sewing,quilting,making homemade bread. I believe it’s made my life much more fulfilling. I try to teach my grandkids as much as I can,they all sew with me,play my dulcimers,and have tried knitting and crocheting,they help me make homemade bread and cookies and homemade noodles. I hope they’ll remember the times they’ve spent with me,and someday sit around a table together and talk about the things I’ve shown them. Thanks for your videos,I’m really enjoying them!

Great video episode with your lovely Mother. Thank you so much that your Mom could share her wonderful life story. I really miss my maternal Grandmother and my Mother who shared with my late sister and me all of their life memories. I am so happy that I have those memories. They help me to place myself in the world. God bless you, your Mom and your family. I hope you will have more episodes with your Mom. When I was little, my Mother made almost all of the clothing for the three children and many pieces of clothes for her and my Father. At around 4 years of age, I pinched my finger and took it to my Mom for her to fix it. I thought she would put it under the sewing machine needle to fix it. Mom was surprised. She asked me why I thought such a thing. I told her that she could fix my finger on the sewing machine, because she had made me on this sewing machine. She laughed and repeated that story to us many times.

The video is not near ended , and yet I have to comment , my mom is 79 near 80 , when she was young she had a outhouse , ( outside bathroom ) in the city of Philadelphia , she didn't have color tv. Until she was ten , and I never knew this until I was 10 , I couldn't phanton it, ,to me it was unimaginable ( at my age ) . A city ? Obviously she grew up poor . Now she Alzheimer's , and is in a nursing home , she didn't want to be a burden to anyone , now she suffers , the pandemic , destoryed her , physically and mentally , she was mentally , sort of not thier before , but now both ( physically and mentally ) completely incapable of communicating , and suffers physically because of lack of care . I miss her so much , and she is still here . Thank you so much for sharing your mom with us , I want to see if my mom responds to listening to " the sound of music " her favorite , movie ? Sound track ?

@@logcabinlifestyle hey thank you , I really mean it , thank you. Do you think you could do a video on " banking a fire " when I was young an old-timer said they ( everyone ) would but ash or ash and dirt mix on part of the fire , just before they go to sleep , build the fire up a little , and bank it . ( But make sure it's safe first , it produces charcoal ,) it works outside , I've done it numerous times .it would be interesting to see what you think , of it !

Your mom may have lived that way but my mother is almost 90 (born in 1933) and she certainly had lights and electricity. You'd have to go back a generation to Gma, born in 1907, to be pre-electricity.

It's sad how many families don't have meals together. Kids don't just go out and play and have adventures. Instead it's all team sports, so nights and weekends are running around with that business, no family time.

Christmas is a new tradition started for a new country (America). It was a way to bring a common tradition to a multicultural population. A way of uniting different groups under a common familiarity.

That’s a very good way of explaining it!
@crosisofborg5524
@crosisofborg5524 Жыл бұрын
Completely untrue. Christmas began in the 9th century. The contemporary Christmas with decorated trees began in the early 1600s in Germany. The only thing about Christmas that was new when the Americas were settled were wreaths and changing the name St Nicholas to Santa Claus. Gifts aren’t a new thing, carols aren’t a new thing, none of it was created for a new America.

When women entered the workplace is when the family unit began to collapse. There is a direct timeline between the rise in juvenile crime, pregnancy and drug addiction and women seeking careers. We need to get back to women staying home and raising children.
