Cheers for this George - I was secretly hoping to be roasted like a chicken, but I'm glad to played my role as a prop in an educational lesson. Really great videos and certainly one of the best Japan language learning channels on KZfaq! If you ever want to stick Natsuki in a language learning video, I'm pretty sure he'd be up for it haha. Drop one of us a line and we can make it happen.

Faegbeard it will be hard going forward learning Japanese without knowing how to read hiragana as any advanced material is supplemented solely by it. I’d suggest pause going with the textbook and get up to speed with hiragana practicing or probably reverse to more basic learning materials.

ように in the first tweet is not hoping to watch videos, but he meant he started to watch Chris’s videos to study (English). Because in Twitter, we need to shorten the sentences to fit in 140 words, he omitted なった after ように. (Grammatically correct sentence should end with ようになった) This happens often in tweets, presentation slides, TV ads etc. but yeah it’s quite confusing.

I assume the description of “ように” at 8:51 is maybe incorrect. The use of “ように” here is abbreviation of “ようになった”, which leads to interpretation “I came to watch his videos, because I can study English at the same time.”.

These kinds of videos are really good because a lot of the language you find in places like Twitter often doesn't conform to what you see in textbooks, grammar reference books, or dictionaries. Even if you already know a decent chunk of Japanese on paper, having someone break down normal everyday Japanese like this is super helpful.

Wanted to Say I'm really enjoying these tweet dissections, I feel like I'm picking up allot from them because its re-enforcing the grammar I've learned from your books and channel, while seeing them in real natural use. I think this really helps me allot. On this same type of learning topic, something I would like to see is a dissection of say a popular song. For example a song from Kana Boon or one of the My Hero Academia intro/outro songs, they are all great. Seeing one broken down in this style would be cool to see.

I'm aware that making these kinds of videos are extremely challenging, but I hope that one day youtubers that dedicates their time and effort showcasing their different takes in Japanese culture and education would be able to collaborate a special. Just imagine popular channel like JFzero Dogen, Misa, AiJ, Tokyo Creative, JP101, Mr. Natsuki and Mr. Ryotoro ofcourse and much much more, I think that would be mentally phenomenal. As a Japanese language learner, to all content creators that makes these kinds of videos for us to see and learn 心から感謝しています。

Dude, this is super-helpful! My Japanese is... I studied for two years in college (that was all my school offered), and since then... I've studied off and on with anime and manga. Mostly dramas and stuff, so I hear both formal and informal language there; I get the impression that it's fairly realistic (at least, compared to things like shounen action shows). It was hard at first, but I've gotten to the point where I can understand a lot fairly naturally (although of course some of this depends on the series). Even so, there are things that are hard to pick up! I can tell when something's being said in a different way than it's translated, and... Sometimes I can't totally catch it, and sometimes just looking it up in a dictionary doesn't make the usage entirely clear, either. So this kind of step-by-step break down is great! I do enjoy Abroad in Japan (actually, I think that's why you popped up in my recommendations), but so far... Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I'm beyond the level his Japanese language videos tend to be on. I'm definitely gonna check out more of your content!

Good to meet you. Am a person who wrote the first tweet! (@kmkmken) It was surprising to encounter my tweet on KZfaq, but I'm happy with it. ・Concerning「ように」 As a few people have already referred in their comments, 「勉強がてらよく見るように」 is a short form of 「勉強がてらよく見るようになった」. Namely, it means 「(I) have come to watch (his videos) frequently (not only for original purpose but also) for studying (English)」 original purpose: enjoying them ・TO: Japanese learners Even if it was not easy to understand my tweet, please never mind! Because there are many grammatical ellipsises on twitter. 😅

"よく見るように" in this case is a short for "よく見るようになりました". Because the phrase is on the heels of this guy's feeling (~と感じ), it should be about the result of what he/she had felt. This type of abbreviation is often seen in biographies of sorts. ex. "2019: XXX の知識不足を感じ、YYY の勉強をするように"
