9:47 "Then, I also had work on 1st January..." > 1st January is a holiday for most states in Malaysia (except Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Johor). And since 1st January 2023 fell on Sunday, the holiday is shifted to Monday. So you'll get Saturday, Sunday and Monday holiday this year. But certain firms and company does not observe the holiday and for certain factories it is still a working day but the pay is doubled or tripled. >> Chinese New Year is a two-days holiday but certain companies give a longer holiday for their workers, can be up to a week. For 2023 the holiday starts with Saturday (weekend) and a 3-days Sunday, Monday, Tuesday (replacement for Sunday which is already a weekend holiday) holiday. >>> In Malaysia Ang Pao is not only given to relatives but also to workers and friends. Some even distribute it among the less fortunate at welfare/shelter homes or even at roadsides regardless or religion or ethnicity. We share a bit of happiness and prosperity with the community.

In our current era, the japanese called lunar new year as kyuu gantan, but i think nobody in japan celebrates the old new year, or perhaps some people in some parts of okinawa still celebrating it, since the influence of chinese culture is stronger in okinawa than other part of japan.

Japan only adopted the Gregorian calendar back in 1873. So new year celebration is a recent phenomenon in Japan's long history. What did japan celebrate before that?
