Arthur Fleck's is my personal favorite Joker origin story. Considering the only other popularly accepted version is Jack Napier (honorable mention to Jerome/Jeremiah Valeska)... that's saying something! And when done properly, an origin story can ADD TO the Joker mythos... while also not taking anything away. That's what "Joker" did, in my opinion.

The thing about Jared Leto’s Joker people don’t understand is that he is a modern take on the Golden Age Joker of the 1930s. Whereas the Bronze/Modern Age Joker focuses on the mentally ill, sadistically crude humor of a literal madman and the Silver Age of the 60s was portrayed as an eccentric prankster, the Golden Age Joker was a straight up humorless mob boss who just happened to look like a clown. If anything the clown get up was simply used as an intimidation tactic as much as Batman is. In my opinion, Jared Leto’s version is the purest form of this character. No, I don’t think Leto’s Joker is actually insane ot was broken by his dive in the acid bath, I think he is just a sociopathic criminal who uses his appearance as a scare tactic and is not afraid to lean into his gimmick. I think Joaquin Phoenix is about as pure as the mentally ill Bronze Age Joker as we have seen while Cesar Romero is the epitome of the Silver Age. Funnily enough, I find Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger’s take time be an amalgamation of the Bronze and Golden Age. Jack Nicholson portrayed himself as the Golden Age gangster but throughout the film it’s pretty clear he is actually losing his mind (talking to the corpse of the burnt up man while no one else is in the room, other subtle differences). Meanwhile Heath Ledger seems crazy and unpredictable like the Bronze Age Joker but is really too organized and methodical to be insane. There are moments in the Batman interrogation scene where he actually talks to Batman as a human being and even recognizes empathy enough to be able to get in the heads of Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, Rachel and Michael Jai White’s character. In sum, the live action Jokers rank like this in terms of which Joker they are portraying: Cesar Romero (Silver Age) Jack Nicholson (Golden Age Impostor, Bronze Age Actual) Heath Ledger (Bronze Age Impostor, Golden Age Actual) Jared Leto (Golden Age) Joaquin Phoenix (Bronze Age) While I don’t think Jared Leto is the best Joker (I think he’s definitely behind Heath and Joaquin, maybe Jack) he’s definitely not terrible. I think if anything the market has been so saturated with the Bronze Age Joker that reverting to the gang leader of the Golden Age subverted audience expectation in such a way that the public lashed out. As a bonus, here’s who I think other Joker’s have represented: Zach Galifianakis (Silver Age) Alan Tudyk (Bronze/Silver Age Hybrid) Cameron Monaghan (Bronze Age as Jerome Valeska, Golden Age Impostor, Bronze Age Actual as Jeremiah Valeska) Mark Hamil (Bronze Age in the Arkham Series, maybe more Golden Age in BTAS) To clarify what Bronze Age Jokers Cameron Monaghan and Mark Hamil are portraying, I think Jerome Valeska was centered around Conduct Disorder and perhaps Intermittent Explosive Disorder. Jeremiah Valeska was certainly on the schizo-affective scale with hints of dissociative identity disorder. Meanwhile Mark Hamil’s Joker seems largely based on megalomania and narcissism with sadistic tendencies, potential reactive attachment disorder

I think what makes this work despite "no one wants a Joker origin story" is that this really *isn't* a Joker movie. Replace the Banner family with OCs and set it in real city rather than Gotham, and it still works. It's not so much a "Joker origin story" as it is a compelling thriller about a guys descent into madness... which happens to take the form of becoming The Joker. Similarly, I wouldn't expect to see any kind of sequel based on the movie, because the story here is basically over now that he's the Joker; for a movie with the Joker in it, you go back to the past-less man we see in every other incarnation (hence why the Suicide Squad Joker exists at the same time as this one).

Excellent analysis! Ralphthemoviemaker's analysis mostly stems from a storywriting and portrayal of the film, but I Frankly thinks he missed the point of the mis-en-scéne of the portrayal- Joker is telling the story and the Director is showing HOW he is telling the story during the 80s; an era which the the movies that Joker is supposedly ripping off were already released in Theaters.

I wouldn't say the joker backstory is retconned. I'd argue the joker is a unreliable narrator. All I think is certain is he has worn the red hood and fell into chemicals. That is the only really common element of his backstories. The rest is what he decides to say to best utilize in his situation

Joker's philosophy, his descent to madness, and his anti establishment pro anarchy minions (real or imagined), fit the Joker narrative that is consistent throughout the comics, video games, and other movies besides Suicide Squad. However, his origin, the relation to Bruce Wayne, the laugh (although Phoenix did a good job actually), and no trip to his time as the Red Hood were the main differences. Joker was the best movie I'd seen in a long time it takes the idea of the Superhero movie and subverts it in a way that it feels like you're witnessing a real person's descent into madness. It gave me hope for DC I hope there is a Batman movie with Phoenix's version of the Joker in it he'd do a damn good job.

one of the most terrifying things in this world is a coward that is willing and able to hurt another human. you might think that's backward. but when you think about it. what's scarier. a person that will walk right up to you, speak their mind and throw a punch straight at your face? or a man who will wait until your unaware, wait until your sure he is pathetic and harmless. then use that sense of safety to truly hurt or even kill you when your completely unexpecting it. to me, the thing that comes from behind is always scarier then things that come to face you. you hear about people who stab people in there sleep, or walk up to a person who's completely relaxed a bar and attack them, the person who drugs your drink, or who starts vicious rumors or try's to ruin you relationships using deceit and manipulation. these people scare me far more then any tough guy, at least any self respecting tough guy will give you the chance to defend yourself. a coward, will do no such thing. the joker, is this type of coward. that is why arthur flecks version of the joker does in essence do the character justice.

WhAt I think many people misunderstood was the film doesn't endorse what the joker says at the interview in the end. He is clearly demonstrated as delusional without any awareness of larger social or political issues beyond his inner conflict which some causes are external, but it is also demonstrated his mental illness affecting how he interprets reality. The final interview is not the call out to larger complex issues the fans want to believe, in the film itself it is shown the people using him as an example have no clue who he is or why he did whatever he did, they projected their own interpretations into it which is why the whole thing is so chaotic since there is no real message. It is just angry people piling up on top of each other for different reasons sometimes contradictory and nonsensical to each other. Part of the misinterpretation is how people do not understand how mental illness works. They want to believe there is a logical thought through reason and even some sort of extreme philosophy behind psychopaths while, in truth, no there isn't. Being unable to process complex reasoning IS what mental illness is in some cases like schizophrenia where you can't filter information and turns into a huge mess of connecting what has no relation and creating alternative stories that make no sense. I thought the movie had a huge grasp of mental illness but the audience tends to still project a neurotypical interpretation over it to benefit their own views independent of the film.

To me this film would work so much better if it wasn't as public as it was, I think it's a really well done film, terrific acting and cinematography and the score my god, all amazing, but it's not some groundbreaking masterpiece, it tells a relatively simple story, a couple of deeper ideas here and there but nothing that's new or will change cinema. The Joker name being attached to it put it on another level of attention, and in doing so the public reactions I think were blown out of proportion because of it, like you said people either love or hate it, but a lot of that again I think is because of just how much attention it was getting, if it was more obscure I think there'd be a more defined consensus. When I heard people talk about what it says about mental health and the way it handles it, good or bad I often think it's ridiculously overblown, it's a Joker movie, sure it's made to be more realistic than a typical comic book movie, but you're seriously debating this issue because of a movie about a comic book villain, it's not going to reshape society or anything so quit making it such a big deal when there's so much else that the film offers. Something I always thought goes overlooked is the public perception of the Joker, both in real life and within the film itself. From the perspective of the people in Gotham Joker probably seems like an evil genius, with his killing of a couple guys leading to a rioting city, but watching the film we know that it was all just luck. To me that also reflects us as fans and how this character has been built up by us to be this larger than life insane evil mastermind, even though from a practical standpoint there's no way he'd last as long as he has without being killed, and I really like that angle. A lot of people I heard complain about how he's too weak and unstable to pull off the traditional crazy schemes of the Joker, but I imagine this version would probably imagine that he could. I remember someone saying maybe everything we know the Joker for, the wacky schemes and gadgets, the never ending rivalry with Batman and his implausible ability to always break out and cause more chaos is all in Arthur's head whilst he's locked up, and honestly I love that idea. It shakes up the whole idea of how we can look at the Joker and it does something truly different, I love Ledger's Joker, he's probably the best adaptation of the character on film (albeit a bit overly anarchistic in places), but I feel more questions about the character are raised by Phoenix's version.

What i didn't like is how i didn't see the connection with his joker and ANY Batman story joker. Nor that a guy dressed as him killed Thomas. But what i dislike the most is that when they see the "twist" that wasn't a twist with anyone with a brain that he had no relationship with the girl and etc.. it should ALSO show how his mom would be neglected and in bed scared of him, where him being the nice son taking care of her would be in his mind too. Vee, we have broadly similar opinions on Batman characterizations, but we go very much askew on the Joker. Why do you so heartily reject the idea of the Joker as a mob figure? I frankly can't imagine any other way he could pose a threat to someone as well-resourced as Bruce Wayne. Any other way, and the story's just the-mentally-ill-preying-upon-the-mentally-ill. If Batman is to be a hero for anyone other than the aristocrats and robber-barons, then the Joker has got to represent something other than the revenge of the downtrodden. Let me try to win you over... What I appreciate about Jack Nicholson's characterization is exactly what I appreciate about Cameron Monaghan's characterization... And Heath Ledger's.... They felt real... Because the character was already psychotic before whatever it was that happened to him. I don't buy the whole _one bad day can turn you sadistic_ argument. I think that's one of the Joker's _unreliable_ annecdotes. Studies of psychopaths reveal that they are born, not made. Or perhaps born, and then made. In any case, they are just like us, only with something missing: That kernel of empathy that tells us we are just like everybody else. And that what happens to everybody else could just as easily happen to us. Bad stuff happens to a lot of people. But psychopaths like Mister J are once (or maybe ten times) in a generation. If he hadn't been a homicidal maniac, then he would have been a Wall Street CEO, whose antics would've ruined thousands of careers and caused a global financial crisis. This film tried to make Mr J into a working-class hero. Sympathy for the devil is an idea that catches on every now and again. But I think you could tell a Batman story with a makeupless Cameron Monaghan versus a Robert Pattinson clad only in a dark trenchcoat... And have it be every bit as dramatically delicious as the full-costume spectacle.

The movie sucks. Period. Hollyweird doesn't deserve any attention at this point.

The Joker was a rip-off of past 5 movies. How anyone calls that movie a "masterpiece" is a mystery. A big mystery But only the younger generation feels that way apparently. Sad
@promisnwekenta97034 жыл бұрын
It is a masterpiece. There are just too many good things about it. Realism, relatability, pissing off certain shitty people, great story, etc.
