How did we go from the days of American Pie, Judgement Night, Garden State and 500 Days of Summer soundtracks to now, when soundtracks are almost totally irrelevant?

Movie scores made for the movie tend to be more relevant to the story, emotional, and just plain more creative in many instances. And movies can always have plenty of different sounds and vibes. Horror movies have been doing great in this respect, with insidious, Hereditary, It Follows, IT, recent Halloween movies have been giving a creative twist on the original music, and of course you have gaming soundtracks that are absolutely phenomenal

@@timewave02012 and I've just also remembered Underworld: Evolution. Saw only the second part of the series, but damn the soundtrack was impressive. Alkaline Trio, Aiden, Hawthorne Heights, Trivium, Atreyu and many more - though some of them were remixed versions, it's just not possible to imagine such a lineup in any movie these days. I guess it would be considered too edgy or trying-too-hard to look cool now, but in 00's it all seemed totally natural

I believe the biggest reason we don't see as many iconic movie sound tracks is because it is MUCH cheaper for films to create original sound tracks for their films instead of paying for all the copyright fees to get big name songs in their films. That's especially why you NEVER see big hits in low-budget films anymore. It's also another reason we don't see much copyrighted music in video games either anymore. It's just way too expensive sadly.

A couple years ago I went on this late 90’s/early 00’s movie kick and most of them, no matter how bad some were, I remembered based off of their soundtrack. Most movies nowadays just don’t prioritize that and it results in them feeling empty. Moreover, they lack an identity in a way.

Here's another thing I just remembered about movie soundtracks: It used to be common that a song would be remembered well but the movie all but forgotten. The best example I can think of is "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls, it's the second most played song of the 90s on Spotify beaten only by Smells Like Teen Spirit and EVERYONE has heard it and it's still regularly played today...but it's from a soundtrack to a movie called City of Angels that never gets talked about today aside from in relation to the song. And not only that but the song was directly inspired by the movie, Johnny Reznik wrote it from the perspective of Nicholas Cage's character in the movie, and yet today very few people are familiar with the movie at all even if they listen to the song a lot.

Happened also with Armageddon and it’s song I don’t wanna miss a thing. That song gave Aerosmith its first number 1 on the charts and the song got nominated for the Oscars but the film no one remembers it. Or again if they remember it it’s because Of the song. Or if people remember it it’s because Jon Bon Jovi did the soundtrack.

Theme songs too, lots of older movie franchises had iconic theme songs, from James Bond, The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven and the Dollars trilogy back in the 60s,to The Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, Rocky, Halloween and Superman in the 70s,to Indiana Jones, Terminator, Beverly Hills Cop, Back To The Future and Batman in the 80s,to Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible and Pulp Fiction in the 90s,to Pirates Of The Caribbean and Harry Potter in the 2000s,but in the 10 or so years the only iconic movie theme song I know of is from the Avengers. I remember soundtracks like Judgement Night, The Crow, Singles, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight…. the there were those tribute compilations. Either they had a common theme (Saturday morning cartoons), or were dedicated to musicians (Hendrix, Kiss, the Carpenters, etc). Horror movie soundtracks in the 90’s always included one or two well-known artists, then a bunch of unknowns that the label tried to force feed the consumer- always with names like Socket of Sodom, Sufferbutt, or Dr. Stinkfinger.

The prestige TV-shows of the golden era were concurrent with a lot of smaller budget shows that featured an amazing amount of indie band of varying genres. The canonical example is of course the OC and Death Cab. But it was also huge for a lot of these minor bands to be able to feature in real tv-shows, while the tv producers were happy to be able to fit contemporary, actual bands in their shows. It’s, of course, not the same as the heyday of movie soundtracks featuring bands, and there weren’t really original songs written outside of the odd theme song, but it’s like a smaller budget echo of it. (And god I mined those shows for great songs😂)

In addition to what you said, Garden State also represents the success of late 90s TV sitcoms like Scrubs and the time period when young people made "mix tape" CDRs. Zach Braff made CDR copies of the soundtrack to include with the script when he was pitching it. I would also say it ties back into classic coming-of-age teen movies like The Graduate. Being a college student at the time I remember many people describing Garden State as "our generation's The Graduate". Plus the whole anti-depressant dependent post 9/11 young person mindset.

Finn's taste in soundtracks seems to revolve around mall pop punk. For great blues, R&B and classic rock, there's nobody better than Scorsese and Tarantino. Their soundtracks are hand-picked, not assembled in a company boardroom. Repo Man is fantastic by the way!

I'm a big movie buff, always have been. I grew up around movie buffs. My grandfather was the biggest movie buff, and thanks to him and his massive movie collection and hoarding I got to see a ton of movies. Classics like Alien, Aliens, CHUD, Killer klowns from outerspace, Friday the 13th, Predator, Pet Semetary 1-2, Starship troopers, Class of Nuke'em high, etc. For the past two decades I've largely been relying on "comfort food" movies. Mainly 70's and 80's movies. I basically consider movies and horror especially going down hill post 1999. There really are about 18 movies from the 2000's that I actually like. I was 13 when 9/11 happened in 2001. And all through out the 2000's, as a horror fan and movie fan I was like "Man, the 90's really is over uh? Movies suck now. Horror sucks now." Because ya, I still watched 90's horror when it came out. Only in recent years have I gone back to watch what I missed, or what I had forgotten during the 90's. I was also that guy from Woodstock 1999 telling MTV "I'm sick of the Backstreet boys on MTV live. I'm f**king sick of that sh*t." I WAS THAT GUY. I was sick and tired of Britney Spears, The backstreet boys, NSYNC, etc all over the radio, and all over MTV. For me it was Jack off Jill, Korn, Rammstein, Orgy, I.C.P, Eminem, Tool, MSI, etc. I got into Marilyn Manson, Acid bath, Cannibal Corpse, Electric Wizard, etc a few years later. In late 2000's. When ever Eminem would bash boy bands "I'm sick of you little girl and boy groups, all you do is annoy me. So I have been sent here to destroy you." I'd cheer. It was like "Ya, Eminem hates that mainstream sh*t too!" By the way, Madonna is awesome! I love Madonna. I've recently gotten into Madonna, Blondie, Abba, and Cyndi Lauper. I've been a long time fan of Leslie Gore too. Love Leslie Gore. Of course in terms of 2000's music I was into Kotton mouth kings, Hollywood undead, Tech n9ne, Gorerotted, The birthday massacre. Those types of bands and groups. Of course I was also into the American pie movies. I love 70's and 80's exploitation films. Slasher films. Horror movies. Teen dramas, etc. Back in the 90's; Seal's Kiss of the rose in Batman forever, Everything I do [I do it for you] by Bryan Adams; I rewound the VHS tape so many times just to listen and watch the music video over and over and over and over again. Of course Will Smith in Men in black, and his song Men in black. Gangsters paradise by Coolio from Dangerous minds. My mom actually bought and owned the soundtrack to the movie.....then you got all these 70's and 80's movies, slasher movies with their own soundtracks and songs. Songs made just for the movie. My bloody Valentine, Happy birthday to me, Sleepaway camp, etc. Satanic panic heavy metal horror movies with their own soundtracks. 70's giallo with their 70's synth music soundtracks. And ya, 2000's movies like American pie, Eurotrip, etc. All awesome soundtracks. Love Scotty doesn't know. Always loved the band playing in the club in the film 10 things I hate about you, although that was 1999. but whatever. That was always my favorite scene in the film; Club skunk. Then I watch a modern movie, I watch a modern slasher movie and it's like "Where is the soundtrack?!" "where is the sound of the environment?" horror movies; they are OBSESSED with this bland boring, bluish tint, ugly navy blue all over the entire film. Every character is wearing navy blue. Just this ugly blue tint and ugly color palettes. Modern films just have this ugly look to them, the lighting, out of focus, etc. Also, I did get into Kate Bush this year, but it was by accident. I discovered her song hammer horror while looking up songs to listen to for October, lol. So ya, despite trying to give modern movies more of a chance...they are just not as good as 70's, 80's, 90's movies. Not even 2000's movies and it isn't just "a soundtrack" from a totally different artist. I am talking about the creators of the film hiring somebody to do a soundtrack JUST FOR THE FILM. The soundtracks they do come up with for a modern film are boring and barely even used. Very few exceptions though, like Joker. The scenes where he's dancing and stuff like that. That had a good soundtrack. the slasher Sick, that had a pretty good soundtrack and used effectively. But that's pretty rare.

Another interesting tidbit; a lot of those old songs that are getting big placement in shows and movies are owned by investment groups. I remember listening to a "Today Explained" episode about the recent spike in that kind of investment, and how the groups who do it then go on to maximize the profit by getting the old song placement.

Man, I STILL listen to The Crow soundtrack several times a year. It has my favorite Cure, Machines of Loving Grace and Thrill Kill Kult songs. It also has great songs by more mainstream bands like Rage Against The Machine and Stone Temple Pilots and great cover songs by Nine Inch Nails and Pantera. And other great songs by Rollins Band, Helmet and Jesus and Mary Chain. That same year, the also-awesome Natural Born Killers soundtrack also came out and sits with The Crow as my favorite two soundtracks ever. This, with the Drive soundtrack and Ravenous's score are the only 4 soundtrack/scores I ever really listen to anymore.

The Natural Born Killers soundtrack is probably my all time favorite..The Matrix is a close 2nd. But I never really paid much attention to the soundtracks unless I happened to like a single that was released, or a song featured in the movie/credits. Fun childhood bit though, I had the Lion King soundtrack (it's called that but really it's the score) and I listened to it a lot. But I always had to skip the song that played during *that* scene because it always made me instantly cry. Solid chance 30 years later it still would. 🤣

One of the reasons I think you forgot to mention is movies that prefer to use more ambient music scores and on the other hand movies/labels abusing this and overcrowding b tier movies with b tier music and making the whole experience c tier. Another thing to mention - video game soundtracks. Back in the day it was not possible for games to have decent soundtrack, unless you really like chiptune. Once that limitation fell, it was never not important for games to have soundtracks.

So its not just soundtracks, its specific tracks made for a specific film. Used to be a dime a dozen. And just to bring up a killer soundtrack, I still have my Crow Soundtrack album and it still holds up :P
