I've been arguing for Piette sitting beside Eustaquio, so I agree with KJ there. But I can't see 3 at the back - gotta be the 4-2-3-1. Props to Jordan for putting Hoilett in there. The young crowd seems to think anyone over 30 is useless. We need Hoilett on corners. Davies cannot be taking those any more. We simply cannot afford to throw away corner opportunities this summer. And you have to wonder who's getting on the end of attacking corners?
@djknox2
@djknox2 13 күн бұрын
Precisely my concern too. First, we need set piece delivery and that, for the time being, is Hoilett or Osorio. Then we need some height on the receiving end. Stephen Vitoria at 1.95m is a beast in the air. The closest we have in the height department is Scott Kennedy at 1.93 and Bombito at 1.90m. If we are going to mothball Vitoria, we must invest in a replacement with height and speed.

I like Piette but he has no business playing at the Copa and World cup level. He's tough but he has no pace and his technical level is sub par. Herdman knew it and Biello also.

@@greglawrence9230 That's fair. I don't know who I would play there honestly but if it's Piette we're in trouble. They're gonna have to be creative on this one.

12:00 Laryea is an interesting question. It sure seems like he'll technically be back and ready in time for the Copa. This tourney is notorious for being very physical, and Laryea has got to be our #1 physical player. Should he come for that reason even though he hasn't been playing? I mean, if he gets a game or two in with TFC before the tourney and looks good, I'd have to say I'd want to bring him.
@djknox2

110% I would bring Laryea if he's able to play at TFC. Laryea shows more work rate than anyone else on the team. I think he's a better RFB than Johnston, which is why I'd be interested in seeing Johnston try playing as a CDM...

@greglawrence9230

@@djknox2 I've certainly felt so, yes, but it would take some time. Piette is obviously a 6 through and through. It's in his blood. Johnston would have to train himself out of his constant pushing forward. He's super intelligent, so he could do it easily enough, but for this summer? I also think there's something to the bodily frame that Piette has that faces off well against Messi's super low and nimble stance. Johnston's developed a bit of a chip on his shoulder and some over-aggression at times, which would likely increase the chance of getting carded and giving away free kicks in the killer zone for Messi (maybe inevitable). Piette would handle the intensity without fouling as easily, I think.

I think a 4-3-3 with defensive minded wingers in Davies and Buchanan would work wonders for our team . Win the ball back high and be progressive on the counter attacks. My starting 11 would Lb: laryea CB: Cornelius CB: bombito RB: Johnston Cdm: Eustaquio CM: kone Cam : hoilett LW : Davies RW: Buchanan ST: David

Marsch recently spoke about CBs and didn't even name Cornelius. Might have been an oversight but..... This role is totally up for grabs. Someone will have to go and grab it in the friendlies camp. Marsch did say he likes Waterman, though.

@@greglawrence9230 Waterman is shakey and doesn't bring the height that is needed. international squads are full of height these days. Canada will get eaten alive on corners if we don't find a replacement for Vitoria. Is there a configuration that allows Vitoria to stay on the pitch and not hurt us with his lack of speed?
@greglawrence9230
@greglawrence9230 13 күн бұрын
@@djknox2 I mean, if we have 4 at the back and weren't going to play Davies at the back, I could see Miller, Vitoria, Bombito, Johnston/Laryea. If Vitoria's only weakness is his lack of pace, surely that issue is resolved by putting Bombito beside him? Allow Vitoria to read the play and move up to half to prevent opponents from receiving and turning, and Bombito's job is to provide cover. I see no good reason not to do this. Maybe the one reason I could see is if Davies was at full back - cause then in order to keep Miller on the pitch he has to move into that 5 position. In that case you can only have one of your tall lads in the 4 and Vitoria doesn't make that cut. I wouldn't want to lose Miller. That guy gives 110% at all times and can slide tackle like a beast.

@@djknox2 My issue with Waterman is the dude like to roam....a LOT. I don't see that working out well for Canada this summer. I was at the TFC Montreal game Saturday. Yikes. I actually think he looked pretty good (except on TFC's 3rd goal), but his roaming really caught my attention. It works well at a certain level - he is quite solid - but I think we'll get burned with him doing that at Copa.
@djknox2
@djknox2 13 күн бұрын
@@greglawrence9230 Agreed that Miller is very physical. But he get's burned in the air all the time and at the higher levels of international football, aerial superiority goes a long way to winning. Maybe Miller is good against short player teams like Chile and Peru but less effective against tall player teams from Europe and Africa... Bottom line is I have not yet seen Canada play well defensively when Vitoria is not on the pitch. That is a fact. What compounds this problem is that we are losing a very tall keeper in Borjan for a very short keeper in Crepeau. Personally, replacing Borjan & Vitoria with Crepeau and Waterman isn't going end well for us.

First of all, let me clarify that I am a Jessie Marsch supporter & I am impressed by him so far. Not to get too picky; but this is the 2nd interview in which Jesse has used the absolute wrong word in the past week. Jesse said that the Canadian team needs to "put on a show in 2026" & then he then said that these are "magnanimous ideas" & repeated that twice. As far as I know, magnanimous means to be: altruistic., charitable, considerate, forgiving, selfless & or unselfish. I believe that he meant to say all encompassing or high level ideas, or something along those lines. The great thing about Jessie is that in both of these cases, when he has used completely the wrong word, he says it so convincingly & with so much enthusiasm & confidence, that it is easy to not even notice... 😊 He is afterall being called "an outstanding communicator". I would bet that some of the English press at Leeds may have noticed after a while... Regarding your player choices, I was a little bit surprised that none of you mentioned Choiniere. Great discussion! I also can't wait to see what Marsch will do with both his choices & tactics.

You judge a coaches performance based on what they have to work with on paper. The player pool is miles better than Peru's, and pretty level with Chile. Gotta stop setting the bar so low because of past failures.

@@marktheshark7588 Peru, who couldn't automatically qualify out of CONMEBOL for Qatar 2022, couldn't beat Australia for an inter-confederation berth. Note the Peru beat out Chile to earn that chance. Although Australia went on to do well in Qatar thanks to weak group stage competition, they're not a convincing side. Canada CAN beat the likes of Peru and Chile. Now will they? That's a big unknown at this stage, especially considering on the disarray they have exhibited over the past year. Only time will tell, but no one on the planet can know which Canada will show up to the Copa America as of today. It is truly an unknown. Do they continue to fumble or do they tighten up and play near to their full potential? I doubt @marktheshark7588 knows anything more than the rest of us.
