You can discipline your child but never shame them in public. They will hate you and it would separate you more. If they have any issues at school or relationships they will never go to you for help. Never ever shame your kid, you guys are on the same team

My dad has shamed me or made fun of me publicly. So humiliating. I don't have confidence and it has impacted my life in a bad way. My relationship with my dad is weird. I can never talk to him about private things and there just isn't any communication. I am not even confident in my driving because he taught me driving and he was not the best teacher. Driving instructor said I wasn't bad driver but my dad made think I will never pass my driving test. He always put me down publicly and privately. This has cost me and my siblings a lot of confidence. He doesn't even know how much damage he has done. He is oblivious.

I think it’s a personality thing most of all, I’ve done Psychs and shit since high school and I’m still not sober in college. WOW! That camp story is very similar to mine. I was around 13 and went to camp for 2 weeks. I met so many new girls and buddies it was such an escape from my abusive home that I never called to check in, I was wrapped up in the real world fun. So I get back and instead of me hugging my mom she slapped me threw me in the car and started screaming and smacking me, all because I never called, couldn't she have called if it was important? All I could do was look out the window as all the other kids ran to their parents arms and thinking, great I'm back to prison now and I actually cried thinking I'd never have that again. It was a dark reminder of how other kids lived vs myself.

100% agree with Bobby on this one. My dad was always open about his struggles and I've seen them first hand. I didn't try alcohol until the month before my 18th birthday, we have a long running line of alcohol and drug abuse in my family and because of my dad's choices and my personal experiences I've chosen to stay away from it all together. First off love you guys! Keep up the great work! You guys should really get a child psychologist on the podcast with these scenarios. You would gain a lot of insight in how damaging your style of parenting is to a child. Both of you went through childhood trauma and from the way you guys are talking, it looks like you are going to mirror your childhood trauma to your child. Monkey see, monkey do so you gota be smarter than a monkey. Side note: Addiction is deeply related to childhood trauma. If you end the cycle of giving the torch of childhood trauma from parent to child then your family history of addiction would stop there. When your child goes through emotions of bad behavior, instead of instantly judging it, try to understand their emotion and thought process first to improve their logical thinking so something like that won't happen again. Show love that you care.

@@laynebrock no, all hitting does is make them do shit behind your back because they're scared to come to when they fuck up, or to fuck up (resulting in them just distancing from you). But the premise is simple, a kid who has no life experience (which means they lack the capacity to control/express their emotions) and who is naive (so is prone to fucking up, grown ass people do all the time but we slate kids for it which is backwards) should get viscuously beat for messing up? Not right or fair. She is a grown woman hitting a damn child, the dynamic and physical difference is insane. Spanking, telling them to sit against a wall or hold books, yes, but hitting them like another adult is wrong. Shall I hit my wife if she does something wrong? I come from a family of addiction and my parents always were very open about that and they were addicts while they raised me so because I had so much access to weed, alcohol, drugs...etc. I was never interested on those things and I didn't want to become like my parents so I avoided those things and had a lot of respect for the power of those things. Also Khalyla my mum has a long family history of depression and my dad has the addiction and my siblings came out ok, I was the only one of 4 kids that came out with endogenous depression from birth.

Where parenting has failed in the biggest way, parents thinking their education is the job of the state. IT IS the PARENTS job to educate your children. If you don't have time to raise/educate your kids don't have them.

The one thing I’d say to Bobby as a now 21yr old with every guy in my family being an addict of some kind, every kid is different so a blanket rule like that isn’t always the best. I smoked weed at 11, took oxy at 14 , and have been drinking since middle school , if my mom (dad passed away) was less of a kick your kid out and scream and hit you type of mom, I may have opened up about why I felt the need to be fucked up every single day :/ I wish my dad was alive for that advice, but shaming the kid for drugs may be the reason they hide it for years from u, and then u cutting them off is kind of a way for them to take that next level in a self pitty, drug bender. Idk though only speaking for myself Edit: not saying let them do drugs , but I think there’s a better way to scare them off of it or prevent them from being so curious other thanscaring them about it through your consequences / disappointment from you

I understand her thinking, like, educating the kid on how to handle such a situation can be good but then she's also enabling the kid to go and do it. it's like "HEY don't do that, buuuut since you'll do it anyway here's how to do it best" lol not good. Bobby is definitely the better parent here, I prefer someone to be strict with such issues and make sure that it is NOT okay, rather than just giving that up.... Your kid is much more likely to fall into alcohol and drug use if you make it easy for them to do it. I also don't agree with the whole thing of "oh they're gonna do it anyway"... Most kids aren't just going to start drinking or smoking pot (or other shit). Why assume yours will just do it anyway and make that easy for them by sitting them down and teaching them how to not get caught? Better choice is sitting them down and telling them to never get into that shit.

I dont think that caring more about grades than drug use and abuse at an inapropriate age or at any age really(im ok with experimenting with drugs as long as it doesnt become habitual for you to do drugs at every single oportunity you have or just become normal to you to do drugs, thats dangerous)
