Angela Brown, The House Cleaning Guru, talks about the kind of vacuums house cleaners should use. House cleaners and maids want to know are bagless vacuums unprofessional? And should maids use their own vacuums or the homeowner's vacuum?
There is no time to sanitize the vacuum between cleanings, and you have to if you want to prevent cross-contamination of germs between houses.

Why do I always enjoy watching these videos so much? I don't even really know! Because I DON'T have a cleaning business, I never did, and doing my household was always very challenging for me. Hmm, maybe there's one part of the puzzle. I have often punished and judged myself for not being able to keep my house clean and tidy, I've felt like a failure from time to time. And then there's you, the cleaning guru, symbolizing everything I wish I was when it comes to household organization. And you also make cleaning sound like something... Positive. Something honorable. You helped me get rid of my negative associations with cleaning. You completely embrace being a house cleaner whereas others often look down on it. This is the enlightenment that many people so desperately need! I know I needed it. I feel like a hero now every time I clean something. The first video I saw from you was the one about depression, with tips about where to start and such. I can say that after years of 'practice' I am now really on top of my household. I finally managed to clean the kitchen every day, vacuum regularly, do the laundry and the dishes etc. And I never thought I could. This makes me feel so powerful. So on top of my life. And aligned with what I want and need. It's interesting how much impact such things have. It's just a household one might say. But a household is something big. It's something honorable. And I am grateful for it. So yeah...! I guess that's one reason why I watch your vids!!! I don't wanna bombard you with compliments too much but I'm telling you THIS is definitely the good part of KZfaq. THANK you so much for everythingggg!!!! :)

Wow ! How awesome that you were so enlightened by her videos. You are absolutely right. I have been a Cleaner for many many years. Starting at age 13. I am now 44. And it’s crazy how housekeepers have been looked down upon for so many years. But I never let that bother me. Because I’ve always felt like an accomplished champ every time I take something that is filthy and make it sparkle. I also battle the depression surrounding house cleaning that you mentioned. It’s very strange that I have cleaned for a living for so long , yet I have trouble cleaning my own house. I have too much clutter and I am overwhelmed. But Angela‘s video about depression recently helped me as well. I strangely just found that video about a week ago. Anyway, I’m so glad that you feel so powerful and happy after cleaning. It’s truly an art to make something dirty beautiful and clean again. I’m glad that it changed your perspective. Sorry if I have any punctuation or grammar errors . I have to talk text everything because I have carpal tunnel syndrome very badly. I hope you’re having a great day🤗

Wow, I would be embarrassed in myself if I needed to use a customers vacuum when I know my vaccums do a guaranteed better job, have more suction, can reach vents, & can do an overall better job instead of using their vacuum that clogs every 10 seconds.

As a business owner you get to decide what vacuum set up is right for you. Since covid, more professional cleaners are using homeowners vacuums to prevent cross-contamination from house to house. And we do train them to do a 360 inspection of that vacuum after emptying it to maintain performance.

That is an interesting way to look at it. No one has really brought that up around here where I live. But I really mainly do construction cleanup. All of my residential houses burned down in 2016 during the wildfires. Back in their lovely days before Covid. But the homes I did clean before the wildfires did have their own vacuums. And it was so handy.

Continuing my train of thought from my comment on the robotic vacuum video: I grew up in a household that farmed their cleaning out to professionals. Some used their own vacuums and a few used our Kirby, which I'll add is a more modern model that accepts HEPA bags. I personally have always sworn by direct-air uprights for carpet cleaning; namely Kirbys for residential use and the Sanitaire Tradition series for commercial use. Both machines wear like iron and the combination of massive airflow and aggressive agitation in both machines makes for unparalleled carpet deep cleaning. Recently, I tore down and rebuilt a Windsor Sensor XP12, which is the commercial grade version of the SEBO Automatic X4. According to the research I did while it was on my bench, the tool-free breakdown of it is a major selling point for cleaning services. Suction and airflow numbers seem to be about average; on par with Dyson's top performing model but in my own tests I've found the SEBO had an edge over the Dyson in that it has much more aggressive carpet agitation. As for the bagged vs. bagless debate, I (an allergy sufferer) would never let a bagless machine into my house, especially not knowing how well the filters have been maintained, since clean filters are critical to the performance and fine particle containment of a bagless machine. And with "disposable" vacuums (and Shark is especially guilty of this) you'll often find hidden filters, under covers that are either unlabeled or labeled in a way that most people wouldn't notice. I'd personally much rather pay $25 for a pack of bags that will last me a year then change my pre-and post-motor filters every 3-5 years than have a machine that I don't have to buy bags for but spend that same $25 on filters that only last 3-6 months. Now I do understand the theory behind using a bagless vacuum in a cleaning service application but the reality of it is that unless you're pulling those filters out between each house and shaking them out, it's no different from carrying a bagged vacuum from house to house
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Fascinating breakdown. Thanks so much for sharing this. The bag/bagless debate has been a big one for professional cleaners for years, and as we become more conscious of cross-contamination we are giving vacuums a closer look. Should we tote them in and out of people's homes? Should we change the bags between each customer's homes, should we wipe down the exterior and floor plate between homes?
@whoisthisguy724
@whoisthisguy724 2 жыл бұрын
@@AskAngelaBrown my opinion from a technician’s point of view is that a clean vacuum is ALWAYS more professional-looking than one that looks like it’s obviously seen a lot of use. That said, a vacuum could look like a million bucks on the outside but have not been maintained at all outside of that. Or as I often see with Sanitaire uprights used in commercial settings for 30+ years, look like they’re two inches from death cosmetically but be otherwise well taken care of. I personally think that if you’re using a bagged vacuum with a sealed filtration system (and that’s important to look for because an vacuum with an unsealed system is almost as bad as a vacuum without any filters at all) that’s been maintained as directed in the instruction manual, changing the bag between every house is a bit excessive. However, it would be a good idea to change the bag and inspect your pre-and post-motor filters before going into an allergy sufferer’s house or when going from a pet owner’s house to a pet-free house, or if you notice any strange odors coming from the vacuum

Hello Ms. Angela, What is the best vacuum for the homeowner to use? Thanks!!
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 3 жыл бұрын
A vacuum is like a pair of shoes. It depends on the user, their height, strength, the type of flooring being vacuumed. Type of soil you need to remove. Do you have a pet hair problem that needs extra vacuum features. I have two vacuums I use for my home. The Dyson amzn.to/3kmXbI1 for all regular cleaning. And a Eureka cordless amzn.to/3uxZ4q0 as a quick crumb/hair picker upper. I use the Dyson 2ce a week and the Eureka on the other days (sometimes twice a day in the kitchen.) Does that make sense?

For folks that are trying to put less in the landfill: the contents of regular vacuum cleaners (i.e. not construction site clean up) is great for your compost heap. If there's pet hair in there, even better as its nitrogen-rich. I empty my cleaners either over a container that I gather compost material in the garage in inclement weather, or directly over the compost heap. I wouldn't do it indoors as I like to knock as much dust off the filter as I can. Having said that, I need to vacuum more often - watching your videos is getting me motivated to do better ;o)

I'm a house keeper, I often use the home owners vacuum, but my shoulder is killing me. Would t it be wise for my body to get my own canister or backpack vacuum? I understand the germ issue and maintenance, but I need something efficient and less hard on my body.
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
The shoulder pain is most likely your dominant arm and the pain comes from cleaning repetition which is why you're feeling it when you vacuum or clean mirrors or wipe vanities or any big movements. Your best friend will be a set of stretch bands. Here is the paid link amzn.to/3lveF6o so you can see what they look like. Keep a set in your car, and a set next to the TV and another set next to your home computer. When you're a passenger in the car, watching TV or at your computer watching KZfaq, use the bands to strengthen the muscles in your arms and back that support your shoulder. Watch a few KZfaq videos on physical therapy for shoulder pain for proper techniques. It will help your shoulder heal and hopefully prevent the future need for shoulder replacement.

I love the newer cordless vacuums, they are great for hard surface floors, under furniture, area rugs, window sills, up high areas and light weight enough to carry up and down 3 floors ! They disassemble and can be washed out, which is amazing to me, plus no fighting with cords or searching for plugs ❤ I find it crazy that so many multi million dollar homes with multiple levels have one crappy little vacuum 🙄 And when designing these extravagant, fancy homes, they put no thought into how things will get cleaned and the time it takes to do it 😏 Love love love your channel !!!!

Oh no, I'm just seeing this for the first time. I'm sorry for the delay. It depends on your personal preference. I use a regular vacuum for picking up crumbs at least 4 times a week at home on my personal floors, and I use a dry dust mop the other 3-4 days. I hit the floors at least once a day to pick up dust, hair etc. And then damp mop the floors 3-4 times a week based on how bad they are. Great advice I do the same thing. I carry a shark lift away in the car and try not to use it. I like it because I have 3 sets of rollers and hepa filters for it that I can easily change out if need be. After use those rollers and filters go in a sealed bag which gets cleaned after a couple of days. I wait to clean because viruses are microscopic parasites they need a host to survive. Let them sit and wait before messing with it. Lol Those newer sharks with removable carpet and floor rollers are a dream to clean and incredibly light weight. I also talk new customers into buying one as well because of these features. Sorry for the rant. Lol again

I clean at a manufacturing facility where we have 2 vacuums. There's one that stays in the supervisors office and it only gets used there because there's oil and grease they use during the manufacturing process that gets all over the wheels it's so messy I carry it from rug to rug so I don't have to mop as much. Sometimes the sweeper breaks and the boss swaps it out with a working one. Any vacuums he relocates from there get new wheels because they get so dirty. I have changed the wheels myself also and we sometimes replace them on the mop bucket because they eventually don't move. It's a really good contract so we don't mind replacing wheels all the time.

Almost 95% of the customers that I have encountered have crappy vacuums and they do not do a good job and that reflects on me and my business. But that’s just my preference in my two cents

Thanks for the tips and the feedback. We got away from bagged vacuums years ago in the professional space because if we are not using the customer's vacuum we need to clean and sanitize the vacuum between each use - which can in many cases be two to three times per day. And though a bag may not be full, dragging a vacuum from one house to the next with existing vacuum dust, and pet dander from the last home was never appealing to the new customer.

I love the Miele vacuum. It's light and easy to carry, relatively speaking, better for stairs and easier to carry up and down stairs, it moves with you well, and as you said works on basically all surfaces. I can quickly transition between vacuuming a floor and a couch cushion in like 2 seconds...and in my experience they work well. Of course there are different models but, I prefer hauling my Miele around more than using a client's own vacuum even the latter sounds like less work...but then if the client's vacuum isn't that good, or its old and it breaks, or gets clogged or something, then everything ends up worse since now I have to fix that. If I just use my own, I know exactly what to expect :D and I know it'll be easier to use.

There are house cleaners that prefer to use their own vacuums. Some homes have outdated or very heavy vacuums. And they like their vacuum and don’t want to buy a new one. I also don’t want to take a chance on breaking their expensive vacuum. I have a cordless stick vacuum that I use when I clean homes. It’s light, with lots of my attachments makes my job easier and I don’t have to worry about breaking theirs.

I also clean a house that has a very old and heavy vacuum and he has old, thick, high carpet through his home. It was back breaking to run the vacuum. He also told me his old house cleaner broke his other vacuum. I use mine now and it’s so much easier to push and carry it up the stairs.

I had a homeowner demand I replace their entire Kenmore because unbeknownst to me an attachment was cracked and they couldn't get a replacement for it. Angela, how do you ask customers to use their vacuums?!
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 3 жыл бұрын
You explain that your company uses the client's vacuums to prevent cross-contamination from house to house. If the customer doesn't have a good working vacuum, recommend one. They are a few hundred dollars (the cost of one cleaning) and then they'll own a good vacuum for life. And you can remind them that you'll clean it out after each use and do a 360 inspection on it to make sure it's in complete working order when you leave.

I LOVE the Rainbow vacuums - they are just not very user friendly for professional use, carrying out canisters of water, and where to empty them? And how to take them up a flight of stairs once they have water in them...for homeowner use, yes they are fantastic.
@Pianoconnoisseur29
@Pianoconnoisseur29 Жыл бұрын
True I have had to use my own rainbow before in some cleaning jobs what I do which has so far been ok with homeowners is pouring it in the back yard in a corner through a sifter so only water goes out none of the other stuff. But yes there’s definitely easier ones to take up and down stairs. When I do housekeeping my boss has a Riccar hepa bagged canister with additional hepa filtration. The vacuum I like very little is shark they are just not easy on hose use falls back so easily. Have you tried one?

LOL. It's funny you mentioned that. The video we created was for homeowners who typically don't wear personal protective equipment when vacuuming their own homes. It grossed me out so bad to do it because I was wearing shoe covers and gloves and the camera guy is like "homeowners don't wear either of those when cleaning their own homes. Make it look easy enough a homeowner can do it. Everytime I see that clip I'm grossed out. "Ewww." Good catch. :-)

I know not everyone will not be able to do this but owning 3 or 4 vaccums has worked great for me. I own 4 shark vaccums and swap them around, two each day. I like sharks because all their filters are machine washable (hello Covid-19). I just come home empty my vaccums, wash the tank and dump all filters with tide, bleach and hot water in the washing machine then air dry, that's it, pretty simple, and take the other two vaccums I already have cleaned and air dried a day before. I spray the roller of the vaccum with microban 24 or lysol spray. You can buy refurbished vaccums for your business at Mercari or OfferUp, pretty cheap and I just take them to maintenance to a local vaccum store.

I would just like to say that $200 is a lot for a vacuum. Some people live on a fixed income and do need the help with cleaning, especially as they get older, but cannot come up with $200. I was raised with plenty of pets and a household of 13 people and we used a broom and dustpan on the hardwood/tile and a manual sweeper (think what they use in restaurants between customers) that cost $25 for my grandma to replace if needed. The problem with modern society is people think things like electric vacuums are necessities and they absolutely are not. It just means people have to work a little harder is all.

Knowing what to look for based on your specific needs is the answer. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. I could recommend a brand, and then someone wouldn't have the strength to push it, or they would have pets, or need one that is cordless... Everybody's needs are different - which is why there are so many vacuum varieties on the market.

I'm sorry. Vacuums that are made in the 90s and early 2000s are AMAZING. Suction is the least important thing in a vacuum. You need agitation and airflow 90s vacuum (Ex Hoover Elites) Have very poor suction, but they have the airflow of a hurricane or Kirby! I would use an older vacuum over any of today's crap. All as that you can tell them is, buy a new belt and roller. and have a new bag in it when we arrive. that will clean carpets better than your DC41 you own!
