The hardest thing I've found is no shop I've talked to has multiple shorter shaft options and they also never try to keep the swingweight the same. I get told to grip down, and the head weight won't make a difference, or we can order it whatever way after I buy it. Going in to get fit doesn't do much good if you can't test exactly what you are going to buy.

“Fitting” most places is a joke because of the lack of swingweight adjustments. And by the way…If you just “grip down” you are dramatically changing the size of the grip in your hands and you are absolutely experiencing a lower swingweight. It’s complete bullshit that gripping down doesn’t change the effective swingweight. The more you choke down on any club, the lower the effective swingweight gets.

Another gem of a video bruh! Love these videos that highlight the importance of a proper fitting. I currently game my driver length at 44 1/2 in and I’m 6’2”. I have never hit more fairways then I have now with a shorter shaft and have not sacrificed any distance either in fact, I have gotten a bit longer off the tee.

Finally, a knowledgeable answer! Tons of bad advice on KZfaq about how no Pros go longer than 45”, so no one should. I absolutely hit better with a longer shaft. When I use a 45” driver, I only hit well when the butt of the grip is in the middle of my palm.

I had my X2Hot measured and it came off the rack at nearly 46" long! I had it cut down to 44" before the season started and hotmelt added to properly swing weight it. Hit more fairways this year and drove the ball the straightest I have in 40 years of playing golf. Lost about 10 yards in potential length off the tee on average but I'd say my driving average distance is about the same because I hit the centre of the face more often. Handicap down into the single digits for the first time ever. Played off 11 or 12 last year. I would highly recommend to any golfer exploring this option and especially if you have a spare driver to experiment with.

Exactly!! Right now I'm looking for a relatively up to date driver, within let's say 10 yrs old, with a steel shaft just so I can cut it down to 43". Couple of neck surgeries and a shoulder surgery have made it impossible for me swing a longer shafted club. The longer shafts change my swing path to a very uncomfortable and unnatural feel.

I play the TS3 8.5* in a GD Tour AD-DI 6x shaft 44’ in length. I’m 5’9 with a 6’2 wingspan. Driver have always felt too long for me. I’m hitting so many more fairways now that I’ve got a shorter driver. I may have lost a few yards but i dont care at all. I’m already over 300 yards so who gives. Shorter is just easier to hit for me. I tee it up nice and low and swing easy. KABOOM!!!

Hmmm It's a fact that Titliest have made their stock shaft offerings longer on the new drivers ,I've been using 44.50 for ages now and stuggled to hit good shots with the TS drivers at my fitting a couple of weeks ago ,banged in my 44.50 inch Diamana shaft with mid size grip in to the TS2 and was flushing it straight down the middle and longer than my 917 .What the Titliest fitter did not mention was that the average driver shaft length on the PGA tour is 44.50 inches ,he probably felt he couldent explain it that they are selling drivers longer than tour players are using ,nothing wrong with that if they want to keep up with Taylormade and co ,but most people would hit it better with a slightly shorter stick .

I now play a 44.5 inch driver. Gave up a bit of distance but the big misses (to the right) have all but disappeared. Just working with tweaking head weight at the moment to get the right SW as losing an inch took me down into the high C range. The beauty of the modern driver is you can pick up some cheap shaft pulls off eBay with different lengths, flex etc and find what works best for you with a couple of turns of a torque wrench

@stevenziegler1067
@stevenziegler1067 5 жыл бұрын
@@denniswebster1048 I dropped all the way down to 44" and did not account for swing weight. It just felt right. I could also swing faster, which compensated for the speed lost by having a shorter shaft. It was a wash and my club speed was unchanged. Ball speed increased because I was much more consistent, so I gained distance and increased fairways hit...that stat is 22 points higher now, which is huge. 4 fairways per round huge!
@G.M.Wilding
@G.M.Wilding 5 жыл бұрын
Dennis Webster yes, the fitter placed a weight in the bottom of the shaft to compensate for it. I had the option of having ‘hot melt’ inserted into the head instead, but that would’ve been a permanent fixture so I opted against it.

That's great stuff. Most viewers will be choking up on their drivers when they go to the range this weekend or when they play to see if it helps. I think grip size and feel are two factors that most don't think about when being fit. I would argue that what grip you have on the club would effect delivery as much as shaft length.

great video again. I know people love to talk about drivers and these new ones are much easier to strike with the bigger club heads. Can you do a video that compares the benefits of using a 3 wood off the tee versus any driver you want to use, distance and dispersion comparison. All I would suggest is that the 3 wood selection is biased to hitting off a tee rather than the deck

Crossfield swing very much on plane throughout, so he could probably play even 46 easily. Most people come over the top though, and longer shafts exaggerate that tendency - not good and shorter shaft better. I cut down from 45.75 to 44.5, tip weighted to D0 (45.75 was D3) and boom = easier to swing, a little flatter ballflight with a little less spin and a lot better dispersion with no loss in distance overall about 280 yards total on good hits hdc 4. By the way both fitters seem to know their job and very nice.
@isdos
@isdos 5 жыл бұрын
All the manufacturer's have a race getting out "longer than ever" drivers but it only means that the shafts are longer than ever. As said on other comments, most of the amateurs would benefit from shorter shaft. Better strikes increase ball speed more than longer shaft does. Also as center of the face is found more often, spin is reduced which again gets more distance. For most of us amateurs, shorter shaft = more ball speed, less spin -> more distance.

Problem is most fitters and none that I’ve seen have any concern at all about shaft length and I’m 5’6”. I’d think that’s more important as a shorter bloke than someone at 6ft. They all seem more interested in shaft flex and weight and I suppose that’s a quick fix to get you out the door rather than a shaft modification that will need actual physical work and time to set.

Shaft weight major consideration for longer length shafts. General 65-70 for most players, strong players plus 105 mph speed, 70-78. The more weight in shaft reduces the amount of extra head weight needed to balance swingweight. Driver static head weight should be at least 205 grams, up to about 210 grams. shaft flex is measured at 205 for flex frequency. Swingweight for drivers are overrated. Overall club weight is a major factor for most clubhead speed.

I would like to know this too. He says that they changed weights to get to 'appropriate' SW... I would hope that would mean that they MOI matched and tipped the shafts (because of the additional head weight) to achieve a consistent feel, but I'm guessing we will never know.

Mark, great video! I recently purchased the PING G400 Max driver (and love it)! However, it came with a standard 45.75" shaft. I'm hitting this club pretty straight, but noticed as I get tired later in the round, my drives tend to go a bit right. My question: If I decide down the road to shorten the shaft, how would that be accomplished? Would I have to order, say, a new 45.25" shaft, or can I have the current shaft shortened by a club fitter? And if so, would they need to add lead tape to the bottom of the club head to keep the swing weight at the current D3 SW?
