The new documentary "Lucy and Desi" takes an intimate look at the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The stars' daughter, Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill, tells Access Hollywood's Kit Hoover that she hopes viewers gain "a deeper understanding" of her parents. She also revealed what she misses most about them - and it's something that "[drove her] crazy as a kid"! Director Amy Poehler also shared more insight on the "groundbreaking" couple with Access. "Lucy and Desi" is out now on Amazon Prime Video.

One of the best parts of the documentary, for me, is its long overdue recognition of Desi Arnaz (Sr.)'s contributions to the entertainment industry. He was so much more than "Ricky Ricardo." For anyone wishing to learn more about his many lives & careers, I highly recommend his autobiography, "A Book by Desi Arnaz," which was first published in/about 1976.

I grew up as a sick child always missing a lot of school. Lucy and Desi was my companions . They made me laugh and gave me so much hope wanting a better life and a man to love me. When my mom told me they divorced in 1960. I was stunned and cried and cried. Silly huh? But I was a child of the 50s and 60s. God Bless them both

This doc was so well done! I loved the use of the audio tapes so you could hear Lucy and Desi in their own voices. But Amy, Lucy was not from the Midwest. She grew up in New York State.

The main reason for I Love Lucy is - Lucy's persistence she wanted Desi to play her husband so he wouldn't go on the road and cat around. She wanted him near. Truth be told, I waited for this film, waited for the recordings which I liked, though most of Desi's recordings were taken from talk shows I've seen. I've learned more about them in the last 2 months from reading Lucy's book, now reading Desi's book, reading interviews with people who knew them and knew the real facts about them, more than I learned form the film, though it's a good film, I expected to see more. I thought I'd receive answers from it, but I received more answers from The Plot Thickens. I wanted to know if they loved each other till the end, just as they did when they were married. People tend to believe they did because it's nice to hold on to that feeling because they were America's favorite couple, and well, their daughter would love to think that because they were her parents... All the quotes I read, of people who knew them, tell they did, but no one will ever know, only THEY know.

Clearly they did because they spoke on the phone a couple times a week every week until Desi died. He sent her flowers every year on their anniversary until he died. Lucy's second husband, Gary, referred to Desi as his ex husband-in-law because of Desi's constant presence. Desi would often show up in the set of her later series during rehearsals. When Desi's second wife died, Lucy offered him her guest house. Lucy's writers talked about Desi's frequent phone calls to Lucy and how they could always tell it was Desi on the phone because Lucy's mood would change; she would perk up. She was devastated when he died and his death likely hastened her own death. Their relationship is the classic example of two people who couldn't live with each other, and couldn't live without each other.

@@breckrichardson390 I know all of that, I also know how Gary used to call him, and that he didn't even try to compete with him (I talked with someone who knew Lucy personally on her last year. He told me a few things. (How did you know about the "husband-in-law?" Had no idea Lucy offered Desi her guest house (which he built) after Edith's death. Desi also said when was asked, if Gary didn't mind him sending her flowers "I couldn't care less." Regarding the mood change, I heard the same thing about Desi's mood, the writers used to say it on him. I heard the reaction she had after Desi had died, and I know people tell themselves that after Desi had died, she lost will at living, though I can't be sure of that. Yes she could have died out of sorrow, it's logical, after all but I don't want to say things that are not facts. I'm reading A Book now, I finished Love, Lucy, later on I'll be reading Desilu, and then I shall be reading I Loved Lucy, been reading so many things about them and watching so many interviews about them, their story is amazing and I'm writing a long article/post where I add new things to it, all the time, I might be publishing it as a written piece or I'll make a vlog on it.

The last phone call that they had together two days before Desi died - Lucy kept repeating I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you. Desi said, I love you too honey. Lucy said that Desi was the love of her life, even though her marriage to Gary Morton was a good marriage that lasted longer. Also a good friend of theirs said that Desi would come to her house (years later) crying saying that he wished that they never divorced and he loved her and always would. I feel these two did love each other, but could not live together but kept that love for each other always.

@@rachelwalsh6116 Unfortunately Desi was an addict: booze, women, and gambling. He had these problems before he met Lucy, while they were married and after they divorced. His 2nd wife (who really loved him too) almost divorced him for the same reasons.

I watched about half of it so far and plan on watching the rest. I enjoyed watching I love Lucy as a kid, but didn’t know how much Desi did for modern day TV and that he directed some of my favorite shows from my childhood. Desi Arnaz just doesn’t get enough credit for all he created during his time in Hollywood. Lucy was very funny but without Desi there just wouldn’t have been a show. I saw Lucy Ball on the Johnny Carson show and she was just as funny in an interview as she was on TV.

@amyreynolds3619 Sadly your ability to logically analyze a situation appears to be not too well developed. If all of Desi Arnaz's ancestors were from Spain, then he was ethnically Spanish. If his family was from France, he'd be French. Where he happened to be born is irrelevant. Lucy was of Scottish and Irish ancestry. All of their ancestors were from Europe. There was nothing interracial about them!

Yes, crazy, isn't it, that Desi was thought of as a second class citizen because he was Cuban, not Caucasian. All those years I watched the two of them entertaining the world and not one time did I hear a disparaging word or comment regarding his Latin heritage yet it is now included in docs about him and Lucy. And I never thought of him as being any different or any less of a person than Lucy even though he was clearly from somewhere other than the U.S.
