Probably improvisation, the earthquake the year before and the fact that Mexico wasn't even supposed to host the 86 tournament, all added to create one of the greatest world cups atmospheres ever!

my dad bought a VCR to record it, didnt even cheap on the tapes and bought only JVC ones. $300USD for the whole setup. it went on to record France 98 and Korea Japan 02 before burning out

The Maradona Show was excellent making one of the legendary players, and the Argentine football team won the second title. The tournament in Mexico was returned after 16 years.

I once read an article in Four Four Two giving an honest critique of the finals from 1966 to 2006 (I think) Mexico 86 came top. Host nation story, the eventual winners story, the story of the home nations, any superstars etc… And being 11 yrs old and holidaying from home with school for the first time, this was my first World Cup. Italia 90 only shades it for me personally based on England’s story. But for the neutral, Mexico 86 was the peak

MrBobbybobson I think the country that was going to host the 86 WC was ready or something like that and FIFA thought it was a good idea to give it to Mexico since they had all their stadiums ready to go and many were fairly new stadiums at the time.

I think the reason why is Colombia who suppose to run that tournament its government or something did not had the financial backing or something around it. So it was given to Mexico as the replacement hosts and did very well despite the earthquake less than year before that tournament began.
