I'm SO glad that someone else does the same thing I do and considers Paper Mario a "trilogy". Super is actually my favorite, though I grew up with all three. I recently told one of my friends about the series, since they've never played any of them. When I jokingly said there were only three games, they nodded with understanding and remarked, "Oh, so it's like how people say there are only three Lord of the Rings movies." Exactly, bud. Exactly. BLECK!

I'll always hate how Nintendo has conditioned people into thinking this series has always been literal paper beings in a paper world and act like you're crazy when you bring up that was never originally the case. They try to bring up the transformations from TTYD as a "gotcha" but even in those games those transformations are presented as "curses" that are unnatural to the world. Even Origami King, with it's steps in the right direction, relies way too much on paper puns and plot elements. I find the paper style so much more charming and endearing when it's simply used as that--the style--with some visual gags here and there as opposed to the characters winking at the camera every five seconds to make some kind of paper-related joke and point out how they're made of paper.

TTYDs emphasis on storyTELLING really makes the game so special! All the characters are in the world for a reason, may not be a reason useful to the player, but they still provide some nugget of world building. I mean, the storyteller on Rougeports roofs explaining lore that’s relevant to the end, yet is out of context so the dots aren’t quite connected? Genius

Super paper Mario is always gonna be my favorite, but those 2 original paper Mario’s are absolutely incredible and all of ur points make sense! Awesome work dude!

I think it would be cool to see a combination of alternates for Mario (Peach, Bowser, Luigi, etc) and a partner, similar to super paper Mario, but really make use of the over world abilities so that there are situations where you need to have the right combination of player character and partner character to get through a puzzle. Ie there might be a puzzle that requires Bowsers fire breath to be used in conjunction with a blooper partner’s ink spray ability to solve. And of course return to a turn based battle system. You could have a different combo attack for each pairing of player character and partner. If you really wanted to get crazy, each battle could have 1 player character and 2 or even 3 partner characters on the field at a time, a bit more like a classic rpg along the lines of final fantasy or dragon quest.

Really hoping they grow from the old formula! Especially after the survey! I filled it out! Make paper Mario GREAT AGAIN!

I just remember Super Paper Mario being a hard pill to swallow after having a blast with TTYD. It makes me glad I never got into the subsequent Paper Mario games, since I heard worse things, but I'm just glad TTYD got a remake, which means there may be a chance for a new Paper Mario in the future that lives up to it...Hopefully.

The last three paper mario games are prime examples of the famous quote, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." To this day, I'll never understand why Nintendo tries so hard to reinvent the wheel with the Paper Mario franchise. They already had a good working formula. If Pokemon can do it, so can Nintendo. This remake of Paper Mario TTYD needs to sell many copies so that Nintendo can finally get the message from us that THESE are the types of Paper Mario games we want and that THESE are the types of Paper Mario games that we enjoy. Game companies now these days don't listen to reason or feedback from their consumers. What they do listen to, however, is money. And if this game sells well, then hopefully, this will finally convince Nintendo to finally break tradition and go back to their roots as to what made Paper Mario a fun to play type of game. Here's hoping the game breaks record sales so that we can see a possible new Paper Mario done in the same formula as the first two games.

Partners I was playing the TTYD remake, and my friend was confused why there was a koopa following Mario, i guess all koopas aren’t bad. I grew up with these games so it makes sense but for someone seeing it for the first time, he was a little confused. That’s why I think the partner can’t be so important it shows clearly that not all of the enemies are evil just because they are goomba’s lol.

I’ll never forget the first time I played the original and TTYD. So the nostalgia is going to win every time. I didn’t hate super paper Mario, but it did have a pretty great soundtrack and the characters you could play as were a nice change. BUT The first two games are just untouchable Nintendo gems ❤ with powerful stories.

Now here's probably a hot take. Having played color splash i think that its actually a competent paper mario game. Huey while not deep is just an overall fun traveling companion to be with. I mean when you first meet him he gets mad for like 5 seconds because you hit him over the head with a hammer but he's very forgiving and even just wants to start a friendship right off the bat before adhering to his responsibilities. He also doesn't keep berating you for not saying on course to find the big paint stars and loves taking in the sights and sounds. Plus port prisma and the areas around it have some charm to them and look different to your average mushroom kingdom environment

Another fantastic video Greg! I've only dabbled in Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star, so I wouldn't know much about the greats. But I'm really looked forward to TTYD! I already have a Switch copy and looked forward to trying out this *masterpiece* very soon!! :D

The combat in the first two games practically defines what I care about in a paper Mario game, and they haven't even come close to fully exhausting the possibilities of that general formula, so I hope great sales numbers in the remakes inspire Nintendo to explore more in that direction. I did still enjoy Origami King, but it's just one and done. Those first two games on the other hand have staying power and replayability.

15:50 I actually have a fun story about Sticker Star as in when i had my playthrough i was literally at the end but i didn't have enough good stickers so i basically had to grind for some good stickers...that's when i just quit the game and then never touched it again.

Paper Mario's stories represents Mario and everyone he meets. Mostly him, his partners, Bowser, and Peach and their perspectives. The first two Paper Mario games are classics of Mario and his partners going on adventures to save Peach and help the Mushroom Kingdom and other regions. However i believe that the first two games of Paper Mario, the gameplay not only represents Mario, but also the partners you have in the overworld and battles. Battles depends on who you partner Mario with they also represent how you handle things. RPG games use these 2D battles with each characters on two opposing sides to resolve a conflict. Who you have also changes how you play with Mario and process with your equipments of items, badges, weapons, and partner power ups. Super Paper Mario wasn't bad, but it was like another side stroller and easy to level up with the infinite damages and points. Sticker Star had limits and heavily relied too much on finding stickers to get out of battles and conflicts. After these with Color Splash and Origami King, Mario was most likely doing majority of things by himself. Don't get me wrong. Origami King had fun moments and dance theme songs. But Paper Mario and TTYD had a lot of great interactions and adapative dialogues to show their personalities and colors of life. I think if Nintendo does make another Paper Mario games in the future, they should return the partner mechanics and stories with it.

Have you dabbled with the "Mario and Luigi" games at all? I played the first one and was digging the RPG elements. Well executed for a handheld. Like Paper Mario's little brother. (And Paper Mario is a playable character in one of the subsequent titles? I believe?)

Spitting facts for most of this but... why did you generalize the plots of the first three games as all following a "Bowser gets powerful and kidnaps Peach, Mario collects five or six magical things to defeat a powerful Bowser" formula?! Of the three, 64 is the only one that even has Bowser as the main villain, the other two have original villains and more ambitious stories that go far beyond Mario tropes. And all of them have seven or eight mcguffins, the lower number of 6 began ironically in Sticker Star. One of many downgrades of that game.

I havent played any Paper Mario game, but always been curious about them. Thousand Year Door Remake may be my entry even if it's not really the type of game I usually play. Sounds like it'll be a great diving in point! Wonder if it'll get a 4k port to the next Nintendo console as well. Any tips for a first playthrough? Really great video btw! Sticker star and color splash were actually my introduction to the series in that respective order. I actually thought they were really good games, but once I started playing the other games is when I realized “damn, these are WAYY better”. Honestly, I still think the newer games have some redeeming qualities that make the game enjoyable if you see it as its own game rather than apart of a series. However, that’s no excuse to avoid making amazing and memorable games such as TTYD. In a gist, I personally think color splash and sticker star are over hated, but agree that it’s not as amazing as the prior installments.

the order I played the games was: sticker star, color splash, super, 64, origami king, thousand year door sticker star is currently the only one I actively dislike, every other game in my opinion is really good actually I don't even think there's a point to checking out sticker star cause color splash is just sticker star if it was a good game

Sad part is that in Sticker Star early pictures, there was supposed to be a Chain Chomp partner... If only that game would have been out over what we got. I am enjoying playing Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door remake on the Switch, some of the issues in a way are solved, also no paper jokes in it, I do not know why but I felt that would be put in the remake but Origami King made me think that way!

There are still many things that Origami king does better than the original 2. I think the exploration system in that game is far better than any other paper Mario game. I also like seeing the different places get more populated as I rescue more toads.

Sticker star I can understand to a degree why it might not be as in-depth with some of the RPG elements because of the limitations of being on the 3DS and not on a full-fledged console. That one I can understand that some sacrifices had to be made. But there's no excuse for color splash not going back to the old system in his return to an actual real console

I really like sticker star, purely because the battles are just fun in my opinion. I would try and go through the game and go through as many encounters as I could, without using objects, and limiting myself to say, 2 pages of stickers. I also don't mind grind, I play a lot of grindy games, its oddly therapeutic. But I would also try and fill my whole sticker book with shiny stickers of every major type and just decimate bosses. I'll admit that I shouldnt have to make self-imposed goals to have fun in the game, but it does make the game more enjoyable in my opinion.

I want to preface this by saying: amazing video, I agree with everything besides this, but everyone complains about the toads. I don't get it, sure it makes the game have less visual character, but most any toad you talk to is still unique and interesting to talk to. (ignoring sticker star, that game sucks.)

I honestly believe color splash and origami king are extremely underrated. Sure they are different from the first two games, but they do so many cool things and have lots of original ideas that makes them fun to play and they both have great soundtracks

I feel Color Splash only did two things great. The music(I LOVE the green star’s music and the purple star’s music, as well as the boss themes) and giving the Koopalings ACTUAL personalities and better fights than the New super Mario games(the implication that Lemmy planned on lobotomizing Yoshis caught me off guard and only made me love him more).

Color Splash is the most underrated Paper Mario game by FAR. Most people haven't even tried it. They think it's just like Sticker Star when it is SO much better. I personally liked Color Splash way more than Origami King. Unpopular opinion, but I'd even argue 64 didn't age that well and that Color Splash is at least just as good... Good video, but the way you talk about Sticker Star and Color Splash makes it sound like you haven’t even played them. You say that the extent of their jokes is just “oh look we’re made of paper” when in reality, the writing of both games is still really good, ESPECIALLY Color Splash. You also keep referring to the latest 3 games as RPGs when Nintendo themselves calls them adventure games, so of course they weren’t going to meet your expectations on that regard (also, saying the Pixls from Super Paper Mario have distinct personalities is uh… very up for debate).

Um actully... Nintendo clearly stated Paper mario is an action adventure game, not an RPG. Just check the color splash trailer. Imagine anyone actually thinks thats a justifiable excuse to not have exp systems in a turn based combat game.

Color splash is definitely the best of all of the modern paper Mario games. Super has a good story, but its gameplay is super boring. I guarantee you that if super had the same plot as sticker star, that games reputation wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is now. Majority of people only like it for its story. Sticker star I understand why people hate but I just think it’s ok. Origami king is decent I guess but its ending is awful. Color splash is by far the funniest Mario game ever made. None of the other games even come close to touching it. Every level is unique and fun to explore. The battle system Isn’t the best but the rest of the game is so good that I don’t really care. Color splash is hella underrated
