I think out of all the summoned heroes, the girl is the only one who acts like a classic hero. Makoto has beef with the goddess, because she deemed him too ugly to be a hero but he has found his own way to make a living. He is not a hero in the classical sense, but his connections make him a hero for the demi humans. The girl is a bit arrogant at first, but she has a whole journey where she goes and becomes brave and really grows into her hero role. She has to deal with loss too, but I think and hope she grows even more as a character. Now the other guy, he was simply given the hero title by the goddess and a really scummy ability that he uses to amass a harem and his whole personality is just unpleasant. If we compare him to Makoto and Hibiki, there is nothing heroic about him and he is just throwing tantrums like a spoiled child. In the episode where Tomoe and Mio meet the heroes, the guy tries to control Tomoe and folds Lime and Lime just gets salty about not being able to withstand the manipulation. Mio helps Hibiki and then just demands cooking lessons. I don't remember other shows with scummy summoned heroes, but the guy from Beast Tamer was also scum. Rein gets thrown out the party and then builds his own party/harem, but Rein does good for the people while the supposed "Hero" becomes more and more scummy and turns to the dark side. You could argue that Arios was a fake from the start who just got corrupted by his insane jealousy. A hero is a person who does good for the people, no matter in which world. Even if someone has the Hero title, they are not a hero unless they do heroic things. But even if a hero is a fake, they can still turn heroic or be corrupted by their own pride. There are many definitions and we have probably not seen all of them yet.

To your remark about "hero's" being corrupt. I don't think it's been portrayed much in anime, but there's COUNTLESS manga that I've read where the "hero" is scum and the MC gets revenge or finds a better path through life. I enjoy those revenge type manga where the MC gets revenge on the scummy hero, but I think revenge just isn't popular as a premise for anime unfortunately.

Well, Makoto is technically Tsukuyomi's hero and was asked to "take care" of the Goddess by the moon deity. So rather than the typical agenda of other deities to "save the humans"... the agenda is to "take care of the Goddess."

Well, have you some knowledge of classical heroes? I think it was Jason(greek) who got divine assistance to seduce a foreign Kings daughter and after getting the crown he just played around with other women. He was a good warrior who had warrior like exploits but dude treated the people in his life like crap consistently and was never called out for it by the gods who made his lifestyle possible. And this is kinda normal for heroes. What makes them heroes is not their character but the great deeds they have accomplished. Regardless of what else they may jave also done

In my veiw. When a god/goddess summon someone and they get the title of Hero, they are a"hero" but do they act heroic? Do they harm or help those around them? Do they follow blindly or do they question orders that are given and listen to those voices that are not part of the "group"? These are the questions that I think make a Hero to me in my mind.

In modern Japanese fantasy when you see the word Hero (Yuusha), it is not "someone heroic" at all. It is more of a meta thing relating to the number of popular old JRPGs with the exactly the same story "Hero must defeat a Demon Lord". Yuusha most of the time means exactly "someone who will defeat the Demon Lord", often posessing the unique power which is the only way to damage said adversary. You can often see it paired with the "Holy Sword", "Saintess" and other staple cliches. This show also builds itself around the "Slay the Demon Lord" story, but tries to subvert it in many ways. For example, while the rings used by the demons strip the Hero status from the indiviudal together with the blessing of the Goddess, Makoto was denied such privelege in the first place, so he's just a strong guy, not Yuusha at all. On the other end of the battlefield the scene you described actually happens, when two individuals react differently to losing their powers, like fake one flees and the real one takes the fight, but I dare say the "Real Hero" in this scenario is still [SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER] all about the Demon Lord.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, other than a corrupted hero and fake hero being the same thing. With in the context of what you are specifically talking about in the video they are, but technically they are two different things with a lot of overlap and grey area. The best way to demonstrate it is with examples that are one but not the other. A town is attacked by monsters, and a cowardly guard finds a hiding spot instead of fighting. The whole town is slaughtered, the guard then comes out of hiding panics at the sight of a bunch of dead monsters, trips and knocks himself unconscious, and is later found by a group of reinforcements who mistakenly believe he chased fought the monsters off and declare him a hero, which he goes along with for the fame/fortune/women etc.. That person would be a fake hero but not a corrupted hero since he was never a real hero in the first place. Now on the other hand suppose you have a person who is a hero, but is getting tired of dealing with BS. A bunch of monsters are attacking a town, and the leader of them has 5 hostages. Not wanting to deal with the hassle of trying to free the hostages, the hero just cuts down the hostages along with that monster leader saving the rest of the town. That person could still be considered a hero, but they have become corrupted. A corrupted hero could also be a person that was a hero, but now acts with evil intent. In which case the "hero" description is being used as a pass tense descriptor. Like I said there's a bunch of overlap between the two. for example take that corrupted hero who was a hero but is now acting with evil intent, if that person is pretending to still be the hero they once were in the eyes of public, they'd be a fake hero as well as a corrupted one. If title Hero is more like a job title like in this anime, it could be either or both as well.

To me there is a difference other then Devine designations, think fake cop vs corrupted cop, one never was what they claim to be, the other was, but has gone astray. And while they often have the same results there are critical points of difference depending on exactly what flavor of each we're dealing with. For instance a fake hero may get a taste for heroics and become the mask, but is unlikely to respond to a 'look how far you've fallen', similarly a fake hero is more likely to mess up on lesser known aspects of heroics, while a corrupted hero would be familiar with them

I guess, when this character was introduced he was sort of a character most can empathize with - the underdog, beaten down by life, oppressed etc. Lo and behold, like all other MCs before him, he was chosen, given a choice of advantages, and a life reset button - that a lot of the audience likely wish they could have. In addition - he was also being played by the queen - which i guess earns him sympathy points to some degree. But, he crossed a line when he was being an arse about the weapon during that conversation in the cottage. Any person - being the underdog, having a sad backstory that created who they are now - doesn't give them the right to behave like "life and the world owes me this - because backstory reasons" -- thats what separates the typical stereotype of a "hero" from a "hero" in the TV show The Boys.

I can understand the difference between a "fake" hero and a "corrupted" hero. A fake hero is exactly as it sounds -- they are faking at being a hero but inside they're a coward / bully / or something else very un-heroic. A corrupted hero is just a hero that has either been mislead or otherwise drawn down the wrong path. I believe it would be easier to save a person that WAS a hero and then let themselves be lead astray. Someone that was never a hero to start with has a much harder road that they have to go down to become a hero. YMMV.

One constant theme that I see visited often is the drive to prove themselves in spite of their circumstances. Makoto was raised to be taken away by the Goddess but he had to overcome a low constitution. Of course, discovering his early weakness was a result of the consequences of his birth. Then he ends up being rejected by that shallow goddess so he has to work hard to fit in that world. Hibiki desires to prove herself because she's lived a charmed life. I'm not sure if she's all that altruistic by accepting to be a champion. Tomoki is the worst, obviously. But striving to win because he feels he deserves it is just immature.

Look, in fantasy, there's a difference between someone acting herocmicly and someone bestowed the title of "hero" the title is all that matters because that's all we are talking g about here. A fake hero vs a corrupted hero. A fake hero is someone who lacks the title but poses as a hero. Which isn't nessesarily a bad thing. Like you said, there are plenty of people who do heroic deeds. The corrupted hero is pretty much what you said, the type of person who is fake, let's the title go to their head, acts in contradiction to the title. For this reason, a corrupted hero can be redeemed if they go through the character arch of redemption. While the fake hero cannot be redeemed because first, there's nothing tk redeem. They are a good person acti g heroically, what's there to redeem? And if there was some behavior in need of redemption, the fake hero cannot be redeemed into a title bearing hero. There's nothing to redeem to. And on redemption. The goal of redemption isn't to gain acknowledgement from those you've wronged. That's counterproductive. One going down the redemption arch shouldn't be doing it with the end goal of forgiveness or approval. Redemption is as much an internal transformation as it is an external. For example, what if the ones wronged are dead? Does this mean there can never be redemption? Should the one going through the process just give up?
@gchaos

IMHO the goddess is the root cause. She's a goddess of beauty, but she sees just the external beauty. Yeah, you could have a beautiful person and compassionate and you could have a beautiful (external) person and a horrible human being. He(Makoto) was deemed unworthy because his external appearance, but inside was the true value that makes him a hero.

What is a Hero? Lets break down a few things first. Super Hero vs Hero. Super Heros are a modern convention. Usually people with super powers, costumes and secret identities these modern day heros fight against super villains. Their goals are to save. Save people. Save property. Save society. Save the world. Super Heroes are protectors. Super Heroes are suppose to be paragons of morality. Classic Heroes are different. A Hero rises in a time of need and he slays the monster. Taking vengeance for wrongs defines the classic hero. Ancient heroes are often flawed people that have bad characteristics. They drink. They are violent. They show excessive pride. They are vain. They make mistakes. Sometimes their daily lives are a complete mess. But when tragedy struck, they stepped up and killed the monster, or solved the problem. People praise them for their deeds. And that is the core of a hero. People praise them. Reputation makes a hero. Tomoki and Hibiki are instantly made heroes because the priests told the people they are the Goddess' Heroes. Their reputation was spread by the Church. It doesn't matter if a hero is a bad guy, what matters is what people think of the hero. What makes a fake hero? Taking credit for deeds that you didn't do. Tomoki and Hibiki got credit for defeating the demon army. Not sole credit, everybody knows about the Red Devil. But the various powers that be in the hyuman world have reasons to support the summoned heroes, so they talked them up. Does that make them fake heroes? Not really, but if their major achievements are taking credit for things Makoto does they will become fake heroes. Makoto himself is the opposite of this: An Unsung Hero. The Hyumans don't know about him, his deeds, and most of his actions. As his merchant activities continue to grow and his activites as a teacher continue his own fame will grow. He does become a hero in the Academy City eventually, but it takes a major event for that to happen. A corrupted hero is someone that has done heroic deeds, earned a heroes' reputation and then begun to act against those that hold them in reverence. Usually this is a fall from grace as a hero becomes disillusioned. Tomoki is a strange case. He is a declared hero. His ability will get him revered as a hero, without him doing anything to earn it. He will perform deeds worthy of a hero, but even as he does them Tomoki is enslaving everyone around him. He isn't a corrupted hero now, but he will become one. It is just a matter of time.

Hercules in the Greek myths was the perfect example of the classical Greek hero who did heroic things, but also did any number of unheroic things as well, even killing his own family at one point (under Hera’s influence, admittedly), and though he might have been the worst of the lot, other classical Greek heroes had significant flaws as well. When it comes to the topic as to what makes a "hero", especially in the context of anime & Co., the first thing that always comes to my mind is how this title is used in How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom. Fairly early, the story makes it a point that, within the world where it takes place, "hero" is just a term used to refer to "great men" who've had a defining influence on history. What makes this kinda hilarious is the fact that the antagonist (well, the quasi-antagonist) of the later half of the LNs is often called a "hero" within the story, and I've seen quite a few people among the fanbase who get pretty upset by that, always stating that this guy is just a trashy warmonger and not heroic at all. Yeah, fair point, but they completely miss that this isn't the point of what a "hero" is by the story's own definition of the term - by which said antagonist absolutely is a hero, by the way. Now, what I'm trying to get at is that the whole issue of "real hero", "corrupted hero", "fake hero", "whatever hero" etc. starts even before looking at what these people actually do. In the end, as you've asked, "What makes someone a hero?" I'd say it's a point of view deeply ingrained in our modern mindset that "heroes" need to have an aspect of being a moral paragon - although you'll certainly find exceptions from that rule even in our day and age... and much more so in the distant past. Case in point, this was first brought to my attention by a video someone made - ironically - on antiheroes: The whole concept of "heroic qualities" is ultimately defined by the culture's... or rather by the storyteller's idea of what a "desirable" way to live is. The example that was brought up is that ancient Greek heroes almost always have a "heroic flaw", usually hubris/arrogance. This flaw does, however, not exist to tell a tale of them growing past it - they were never meant to be redeemed. No, it's always there to brutally crush the hero in the end. Their tales are meant to carry the message, "No matter how high you rise, don't do what these people did!" That said, this issue doesn't mean they weren't "heroes" - it's just that they received that title based on a different understanding of that term. The only qualification Greek heroes needed was that they achieved great things that nobody else could. In a sense, they were paragons of strength, not of morality. If you apply all of that to this specific story, the two summoned people are "heroes" by definition of the world they're in - it's just that said definition makes the title completely empty. If "you're summoned by the Godess to do X" is what makes you a hero, then you either are a hero or you aren't, and the matter is decided by circumstances completely beyond your control. In a sense, that makes any discussion about whether any of the three summoned characters are "real heroes" or "fake heroes" pretty much pointless imo, because the word "hero" is essentially meaningless in-universe. And yes, you could argue that the real heroes are defined by their own actions rather than titles given to them by third parties, and therefore, the emptiness of said titles is the whole point. That's fair, and I agree that this is a reasonable interpretation of the referenced scenario. However, and this is one thing that's always been bothering me about the "betrayed by the hero's party" kind of anime stories, there ought to be better ways to examine what makes a "real hero" than to make the nominal hero the worst scum imaginable while making the nominal non-hero the most decent person you could ever hope to find, and then say, "Hey, this guy is a called a 'hero', but really, who's the actual hero?" Granted, Tsukimichi seems to spice this up by throwing a third person into the middle, and that might make it more interesting, depending on where the story goes from there.

In An Anime Setting a Real hero is the one that receives the title "Hero". This Title gives them buffs and abilities that no one else can have or do because of the title. Sometimes the title can be removed if they Turn agents the people they are supposed to be protecting. A fake hero is a Hero in name only, one who helps others, but does not have a title that gives them buffs. A Disgraced hero is one that breaks the covenant of the Hero title, this too is often show as a title. The hero can be in name only in story making, only fallowing heroic actions that the character does. In some system the Hero or Anti hero name serves as markers for positive points or negative points toward a Karma pool. Depending on the pool being positive or negative is how the NPC's react or treat the characters. Act like a brat but when push comes to shove you are willing to sacrifice yourself for others? Good points. Act like a refined hero of old, only to really be a sadistic narcissist with a god complex? Evil points.

A hero is a title, but heroism is an action. A devil can hold the title of a hero, but only intent can render their actions heroic. Endeavor from MHA is always my prime example for this difference. He was a monster, an abuser, a man who never cared about anyone he saved, anyone he hurt, nor see heroism as anything more than a means to surpass All Might. It was only after his dream was stolen from him with All Might's retirement did he ever even try to change and that was only for selfish intent. Endeavor only cared about his own redemption and atonement, not the fact that he physically and emotionally abused his wife to literal insanity, threw away his eldest son for not having the power Endeavor wanted him to have leading to the boy's apparent suicide, Ignored his daughter and second born son, and tried to turn his youngest son into a literal weapon against All Might to accomplish what Endeavor could NEVER do. It was only at the end when Endeavor's sins FINALLY caught up with him to drag him into the mug and grime that he truly understood there was no running away from what he had done, no making right what he had wronged and left to rot on the road, and truly started his road to change... But even then this "redemption" rings hollow to me because he was never held accountable for the horrors he wrought to his family, nor did the law punish him for his misdeeds. Why must a hero be above the law when his actions are hardly heroic? Why must heroism be so hypocritically comedic when it comes to overwhelming power? As if to say even in the world of heroes, power is absolute and those with absolute power can do whatever they want to both the guilty AND the innocent and they will be praised regardless. To me Endeavor held the title of "Hero". He conducted himself as the "Hero" he was expected to be. He protected people as the job of a "Hero". Yet in the end his intention of being the hero is no different than the boy hero in Tsukimichi; just a means of getting what he wanted, how he wanted, when he wanted, and no one was allowed to argue with him about it.

I think you are debating in this video the difference between "hero" as a title or class vs. someone who acts as a "hero" in their actions and/or deeds. Religious and political figures can bestow the title of "hero", and gods/goddesses can bestow a person the class of "hero". However, those who are a hero in title or class may choose not to act as a "hero", and that's part of what the anime Tsukimichi explores during this season. I also recommend checking out Kemono Michi if you haven't already cause it also explores this issue to a greater extent--the MC is summoned to be a hero by a princess but refuses to aid in the war effort against the Demon Lord cause he really likes animals and doesn't want to fight the beast people/demons.

The thing I got when I saw the 2 "heroes" that the Goddess summoned after dropping off Makoto in the middle of nowhere because of her shallow outlook on life was that, the boy was just mainly a bland stereotypical Wana bee baby who uses his bullied past as a way to justify anything he does. The girl is more interesting because it seems she has a more realistic outlook and I always like characters like that. That said I have looked up the rest of their story and the thing is, these two get more and more irredeemable as kept reading their stories.

You probably should have given a better definition of "hero" I think most people can describe what a hero is; virtuous, caring, helps others, selfless, defends the weak, righteous. And by that vague idea I think it's clear Hibiki is the only current hero of the three who embodies a true hero. She's deeply empathetic to those around her, she believes in her cause to protect the hymans and is thus fighting the demon army. Even her first interaction with Mio, Mio specifically notes that Hibiki is more concerned if Mio is okay over preserving her own life or that of the spirit dog. Meanwhile Tomoki has not once displayed any heroic traits. He fights the demon army for personal gain, manipulative, creepy, even his fighting is mostly done when it poses almost zero personal risk as shown by only attacking during the night because of his immortality and immediately retreats when he loses it, on top of never showing concern for even his own allies. Lastly Makoto is a bit of the in between. He takes personal risks to help others but we hear his inner voice rationalizing the actions rather than acting out of a strong moral compass like Hibiki would. He does acts of charity and good deeds, but so far we haven't seen him do so at great personal risk. His strongest attacks have been used in self defense or because he's emotionally upset. That said he's still far closer to hero status than almost all the Hymans in that world.

The guy is suffering from 'Main Character Syndrome' and you're starting to see that IRL. I dropped this series after the real MC decided to murder.

Even a god can't make a square circle. It's a contradiction in terms. Similarly, this goddess can't make a twisted psycho into a hero, just because she calls him one. A hero, definitionally, is someone who acts selflessly for the sake of others. You can't just put the label on a selfish punk and make it true.

3:13 I don’t know I completely disagree A hero is a title it doesn’t mean anything by itself it’s what you associate it with for this world you need to be summoned by the goddess For you it has to be related to the good deeds For me a hero is one that destroys corruption at any cost Don’t restrain others or yourself by thinking your way of thinking is the TRUE one Also fake hero and Corrupted hero are different Fake hero is a person who was never a hero claimed itself as a hero Corrupted hero implies they were once a hero but corrupted due to some event

Who is Hero is always subjective and this always differ across time and culture. In case of classic ancient hero are scumbags from modern moral/cultural standpoint and main requirement was combat strenght. Depending of culture/lore the same traits that moke modern western hero are neutral or negative making character either annoying wierdo or outright villain. Even in the same cultural sphere people dont't agree what is right thing for hero to do (Batman/Superman not killing as example).

3 minutes into the video and I had to stop. The author mixes meanings. A Hero is the title bestowed on those that have been chosen to have greater than normal power. In this instance they were assigned such by the goddess. It has no bearing on their actions, only expectations. It's a role, it's a title, it's Capital H Hero. Not to be confused with heroic people who are called... hero's. It's a description not a designation. Anyone can be heroic and be a hero. While this anime has multiple Hero's, they aren't very heroic at times, and while our main character is not a Hero, he is often a true hero... and often a villian, but that's also all perspective.
