The South China Sea, a vital artery of global trade, stands as a modern-day counterpart to the ancient Silk Road, teeming with territorial disputes and energy pursuits. This region, abundant in hydrocarbons and rare earth metals critical for contemporary technology, is the focal point of a complex geopolitical dance involving China, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam. As these nations navigate the interplay of geopolitics, geology, and technology, tensions rise. The aspirations of ASEAN for economic cooperation and regional stability frequently clash with China’s preference for bilateral negotiations. The 2016 Hague ruling, which dismissed China’s expansive "nine-dash line" claim, further complicates the landscape. Concurrently, increased military activities and U.S. Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOPs) elevate the stakes. Despite these challenges, there remains a glimmer of hope for a diplomatic resolution that fosters regional stability and shared prosperity. There are no territorial dispute on the West Philippines Sea. The Hague has determined none of these area has any territory to be disputed. So therefore the default rule for these situation is the 200 Nm EEZ in which most of these islands falls under the Philippines Jurisdiction.

Reed bank in Spratlys is within Philippines 200nm EEZ they won in UN Arbitration in 2016, not Vietnam, Fyi. Its only the Communist Party in China contesting it, not the Democratic Taiwan.

Unfortunately for the ASEAN and East Asian neighbors, the most hydrocarbons resources in the SCS is on the side of the Philippine EEZ and Sabah EEZ and Sabah legally belongs to the Philippines. It’s only a matter of time before the Philippines actively claim those. The Philippines will be the new Middle East of the world in the near future. This reality cannot be altered or denied. In fact, all the Spratly Islands belong to the Philippines that’s beyond its 200 nautical miles by virtue of its similarity in geologic features as proof that it is the natural extension of its continental shelf. The Philippines will apply for an extension with the International Court in the near future. French explorers surveying the area (if it’s even true) in the distant past doesn’t make it belonging to Vietnam. We are sure the French will not acquiesce with Vietnam on this one. France have explored a lot in the Pacific Ocean, and we’re sure they did not explore for Vietnam.
