This is one of the most informative videos I've seen regarding shoes, and Raphael really knows his stuff. As for the question about Thursday boots, they are goodyear welted, but unfortunately the rest is what you'd expect from a $199 pair of boots: average leather, foam footbed, passable fit and finish. In my opinion a pair of Allen Edmonds 2nds is a better value.
@scottcarroll9201
@scottcarroll9201 2 жыл бұрын
I own a pair of Thursday Boot Captains. You're right, the leather is not as good as Allen Edmonds. There are slight color imperfections that show up after wearing them for a few months but for $199 they're really good value for the money. If you take care of them with hydration and shoe trees, at two to three wears per week they should last you five years or so before you would need a resole. The KZfaq cobblers Trenton and Heath took a pair apart and they gave them the thumbs up, which is good enough for me. It really depends on how much money you're willing to spend. If you have $300 you could get a pair of Allen Edmonds Daltons on sale. If you've got $600 to spend you could get a pair of Carmina boots. For $200 though, it's hard to beat Thursday.

Make sure your shoes are comfortable, function matters at least as much as looks/aesthetics. I had a pair of Santoni shoes, they're one of the nicest looking, most expensive I ever bought, but they were very uncomfortable making them hard to wear.

I’m glad you supported the local cobbler when you needed work. Really as long as you have a good local cobbler there’s very little reason to send them back to the manufacturer. I have a shoe repair shop and do high end work, I always remove old stitches and have a lot more options than the manufacturer. Allen Edmonds for example uses a very low quality leather sole and heel on most of their models. At my shop we have a standard leather that is better than most and offer JR leather as the premium upgrade. I can’t speak for every cobbler, there are lots of hacks out there unfortunately, but I personally spend more time on finishing than the manufacturer does and if you have an odd request, like green soles and laces or something we make it happen. Also most manufacturers will reject a repair job for any little reason, if you had work done elsewhere they reject them, if there’s a tiny little crack in the uppers, they reject them, did you wear a hole through the liner, REJECTED! Meanwhile the local cobbler will be happy to address those issues and you aren’t out shipping both ways. The manufacturer figures they’d rather have a new shoe sale than a recraft. Anyway, great video, it was nice hearing about some of the European brands I don’t often see. I’ve only seen one pair of JW Westin’s for example. Interestingly the customers name was J(Maybe John or something) Westin.

First off, I could hear you well enough. I've got no complaints. Secondly: I've purchased shoes from a Portuguese shoe-making company called Undandy. There, you could customize your shoes for a decent price (at least $190 US). These shoes were my "start-up set" (4 pairs in all). As of earlier this year, I have switched to Ace Marks. I have 5 pairs on the way, and I look forward to wearing them once I receive them. I doubt that I'll go to another brand, as Ace Marks makes luxury shoes more affordable than the other brands out there.

Raphael - although I did enjoy this video, there is one point of controversy I want to bring up - I know you are all about quality, which I cannot blame you for, but it may be difficult for some to invest in quality for a few reasons: 1. Price - as a quality pair of shoes is at least $200, it can be expensive, (but what about the cost per wear? - yes, this is true, but considering all the other quality pieces one should invest in - shirts, suits, coats, it will inevitably cost a lot - it can really be expensive, so I can understand if someone has to spend less money on shoes). 2. Materials - seeing as though quality suits and shoes are made from calf leather and suits from pure wool, I can definitely understand if someone chooses to spend less on these items for ethical reasons - vegan, animals, etc, and opt for man-made materials instead. As long as the Gentleman's Gazette does not look down upon an individual for these decisions, I am happy. :)

I really don’t understand your comment!!! There’s no good shows for $100 period the Cole Hann’s and Johnston & Murphy’s quality is not there anymore, quick story I bought a pair of J&M and wore them 1 time I went back to wear them again and they look old worn out, the idea of buying a $200 pair of shoes the will last almost forever they can be restored you can do that with mass produce shoes instead of buying $100 every year same with clothes but also quality names over fashion names just like he said you will be better off with Santoni shoes than Gucci cause the Italian brand is just a name!!! And remember is not buying a $200 shoes is investing $200 shoes some are fine with white sneakers and jeans but for some of us enjoying the good stuff give us the satisfaction of being well dressed!!

Dear Raphael, you mentioned "ugly" (without further comments) Lloyds shoes. I think that you might have experience with them in times when you lived in Germany. The situation is that in my country (Riga, Latvia) your "native" German brand is seems the only modest quality option available. As with the Loake their 1888 line is not ugly at all and besides are good year welted and sturdy built. The only thing is that they are priced over 300,- and the model I like retails for 400,-. Next month I’m having a business trips to Warsaw where Loake and Shoepassion are available. What is your opinion- should I try Loake and Shoepashin- their shoes are priced below 300. What are their quality? Had previously owned 2 pairs of Lloyd shoes with mixed experience. One rubber soled- an overpriced crap with the sole gluing off in the 3rd month. Other- leather soled cemented construction “summer” derby shoes which I wore every day in office for 8 years!!!

OK you guys that are furloughed now is the time to work through your shoe collection and renovate them. If your shoes are particularly dirty, brush the dried dirt off and clean the leather up with saddle soap. Rinse it off and leave to dry. Apply a generous amount of cobblers cream and leave to dry. Apply a generous amount of shoe polish and leave them out in HOT sun or use a hot hairdryer on the shoe to melt the polish in, finish with spit and polish with brush. If your shoes have leather soles, I would suggest that you wear the shine off it, one wear will do this and have a rubber sole applied, it will extend the life of the shoe.

I bought a pair of goodyear welted Zign shoes. I bought it from a market place in Romania. They have an unusual look but are great for a casual outfit, the color is very dark blue/green and a bold welt. But I've bought them for 30 € and they are almost brand new, they look like they were only tried on, not worn by someone. The other time I went to that market place I've found a pair of classic full brogue, medium brown, goodyear welted, leather sole, derby shoes and they are no brand at all, maybe they are handmade. I bought those for 15 € and they were in very good condition, a bit of wear on the sole, very little wear. They are timeless and I couldn't found a pair like that for under 200 €. Buy vintage! Go vintage! Go for a treasure hunt! It's fun, after all. ;)

Hi I can hear. I agree with you for one of the brand shoes that cost over price. Its sizing is its own. No one else does it like them. So I brought two pairs of Paul Evans for a fortune, i ordered size 12 PE and realise they werw a half size to big. I'm actually size 13 US. But like you said the patina is good but the shoe itself is over priced. Even thou I bought a matching blue belt for my blue sued loafers and I love the belt. I like the quality. Its my first belt I brought for that price. On the other hand I tried a 1/2 size smaller than my size 12 and it fitted snuggly to my feet. The leather soles feels like just a tad awkward. I bought on sale this time. Wait for when shoes go o sale. Awesome video. I'm waiting for another pair of chelsea boots from them. I bought some allen edmonds loafer size 12 US. It was the wrong size so I have to send them back. I ordered them same time I was ordering my Paul Evans. If your familiar with their size with PE it's not the same as your traditional Shoe sizing. They do have all the info and details for sizing I just got it all muddled up. I think I was just showing off with my credit card. I also brought a pair of magnini. I'm breaking them in thou. Talk about ouch. I got those from at Saks Fifth Avenue. I didn't have the choice with getting the width for my fat feet.i got them for half the price because they were on sale. The stitching inside the shoe is visible. This pair from magnini is brown monks.

Gentleman's Gazette He probably meant a KZfaq ad that automatically runs after a video exceeds a specific run time. In the case of this video, it was almost at the end of it.

Hi Gentleman's Gazette, Just sharing my top picks of Men's dress shoes, would like to know your take on my list. Yohei Fukuda Antonio Meccariello Marquess Masaru Okuyama Gaziano & Girling Ann. Bespoke shoemakers TYE Shoemakers Aubercy George Cleverly Stefano Bemer Saint Crispin's Alternatively, for an affordable pair of MTO or ready to wear dress shoes, I would go for - J Fitzpatrick shoes. Amazing shoes for the price and the closest one could get to top quality dress shoe, without going bespoke, which is expensive.

Great video as always. Was wondering your thoughts about Paul Parkman? Some of their styles are a bit exotic or colorful but the few shoes I've got from them have been amazing. Like stepping into butter the Leather So Soft.

I have some expensive shoes from various brands and I think the Gazette is under-rating the quality of luxury brands like Gucci and Hermes. The quality on my Gucci and Hermes shoes seems nicer than my Edward Greens.

igloo2 Gucci has good shoes. I think Hermès is made by John Lobb. Style can be a matter of taste and preference. I for instance have a natural sense of style and I found that some fashion bloggers have vaste knowledge about style but they lack the natural flair when it comes to style and fashion.

You need a proper wrist watch! You can go vintage and not even know you have it on. You can't go that far with your persona of a well dressed vintage inspired gentleman and not wear a damn wrist watch. Please take that last step if not for yourself for the wrist watch community we need men like you to help keep the art alive!!

I bought Alden walkers, they're built like a tank, and walk like a tank. I don't run marathons, but they don't work for me. To call them clunky would be an understatement, at least in my opinion. Just had to say that, get it off my chest.

What do you think about red wing boots and wearing them with a suit? The typical dress shoes don't feel like me, I feel a lot more comfortable in a shoe like the Red Wing 8119 Iron Ranger Oxblood.

They aren't necessarily the most formal but maybe. I think the Beckman or even the Blacksmith from Red Wing would be a better choice but if it makes you happy and it's not super formal go for it.
