THE RACE

Күн бұрын

After Mercedes struggled with a lack of rear stability during testing in Bahrain, many looked back to its difficult pre-season in 2019 and assumed it was another case of sandbagging. But are many myths and half-truths about how Mercedes seemed to be behind in testing in 2019 only to win the first eight races of the season and the reality is a far more fascinating story. We look back at what really happened and explain what lessons, if any, can be applied to 2021.

They were planning to use the 2020 tyre in 2021 but instead chose to play it safe and added 600 grams of material around the tyre to thicken the tyre at the contact area. The reason being they expected teams to recover the lost downforce and exert too much stress on the 2020 tyre.

I think people forget the past too easily. When you stop developing last years car mid season, you have half a season to develop several iterations of this years car. Merc showed up to test with one that didn’t pan out. Next iteration at the first race maybe the nail in the Red Bull coffin?
@Real28

I just added this to my comment before seeing this. Mercedes stopped dev half way through to focus on this year and 22. There is no way Merc could spend an extra 4-5mon on R&D and get it WORSE than their rivals. In the very least, their rivals would catch but not pass. So even acting like RB is faster, I won't buy any of it until the checkered flag drops in the first race.

The low rake LWB concept relies on maximising the floor to create a larger surface area of ground effect like downforce across the underbody. Having a larger surface area makes for a less volatile airflow and better influenced airflow is better balance. If you remove this however, you have to find other ways to create a similar effect or relinquish the advantage. I believe this is the challenge faced by Mercedes now. High rake isn't so much reliant on an agressive floor. It's shape naturally creates more downforce than low rake. It's only once you make more proactive use of the floor the scales tip.
@noodle098
@noodle098 3 жыл бұрын
James allison said himself last year that people are focusing too much on high rake/low rake and realistcally it doesnt have as much of an effect on the car as people think its more how the rest of the parts on the car complement the different aero strategy each team has gone for and how they can adapt that
@tyroneclinton1991
@tyroneclinton1991 3 жыл бұрын
@@noodle098 the problem with that is If you decide to take on hi or low rake as a philosophy for your car it has major effects on your design process and how you approach things within the regulations. The fact that the floor and rear diffuser have been cut down could mean a more pronounced effect that it had in previous years because you cant get around the deficiencies either philosophy has. Beyond that you must remember that the Merc has always been by far the longest car on the grid so that plays a huge factor in how much of the floor they end up loosing as it's based of a measurement from the center of the front wheel hub and not the rear. All these small things can add up to a much larger overall problem that the had to fight through in development and testing. This all said 1 thing remains constant and that is Mercedes ability to turn things around really quickly regardless of the problems they face.

I think the real difference this year will be the cost cap. Merc won't be able to just out spend their rivals to the same degree. If they don't start off strong then it will be more difficult to develop the car quickly given their wind tunnel handicap. I wont' bet against them but I think a .7 sec advantage this year is unlikely.

Going into testing they will have had a good idea of two or three variants they can run with that maximise downforce, straight line speed etc etc. In all likelihood they have a safe bet design which is easily implementable aerodynamically. I’m willing to bet they tested a high risk outlier to see how the drivers could handle it, knowing they have a design which replicates handling from last year. The combination of aero with new tyres is the goal. If you have excellent CFD data which they undoubtedly do, your modelling and simulation becomes that much more accurate. Mercedez will be fine.

Maybe RB showed their hand a little more than Merc in the excitement or Merc just ran a little more fuel to disguise their performance a little. Toto could come out and tell us the absolute maximum of their car in every aspect and prove with data that they're slower than Red Bull. And as a Data/BI Analyst by trade, I will STILL ignore that and bet on Mercedes until they solidly are behind in the first race. All the videos in the world trying to show how this is different just won't be enough. After 7 years of mind numbing dominance, nothing can prove to me their speed except Quali and in-race performance in a few weeks. Remember, they stopped development last year half way through to focus on this year and 2022 and still cruised home...

The major fact that these two years share is that people are still interpreting test results without any data and predicting the entire season based on nothing but speculation but making it sound as if it were underlined by facts which it simply isn´t. When will fans, journalists and all you self-proclaimed "experts" finally realize that as long as you can´t see the telemetry of the cars, you won´t be able to conclude anything out of testing?

Mercedes is massively sandbagging. They simply don't run qualifying simulations on a fully optimized car. Instead, they test individual components on certain sectors of the track with a 'control group' car. That's why they always stay below the top time in the time sheets. But don't bee fooled, they'll definitely be on top of the time sheets come race day.

With any luck, we get something like 2009, and Red Bull pulls out a big early lead before Mercedes (inevitably) gets their package perfected after a few races and begins blowing everyone else away. But if the Merc is struggling to start the season, it won't be for long.

Typical jurno logic: 2020 - Verstappen spins a few times during testing immediately means Red Bull has an unstable rear and a snappy car. 2021 - Hamilton spins a few times during testing immediately means Mercedes has an unstable rear and a snappy car. Like what the hell? Did I miss all the spins and big oversteer moments Albon and Verstappen had last year? I don't remember them strugling too much with the rear. Don't really remember them talking about things like that either. The only people who started those conversations was always the jurnos... Must be just me though... Watched the best onboard laps from Bottas and Hamilton from the test. Where is that unstable rear? Bottass lap is more like understeer all over the place, Hamilton's lap was also pretty clean, bit more oversteer but that could be setup preference. And it is pretty easy to tell the engine was turned way down for both, lazy accelerations and gear shifts out of corners everywhere, especially noticable on the lap Bottas did. Top end sounded weak too. There you go: 1.5-2 sec. Another thing is the relation between Mercedes and very low grip scenarios. Remember Portimao, Turkey? They had no pace until the track started to evolve. Going back even more, they strugled in Monaco and Singapore pretty frequently, both unused street circuits with pretty low grip. Could also be the longer wheelbase there, but still. Bunch of sand in Bahrain, low grip again. That looks more like a pattern to me, but that is still pure speculation. I just don't get wtf these people keep talking about, a few spins in TESTING doesn't mean sh*t. They are there to find the limits of the car, understand how it behaves with different setups. Testing edge case setup choices too... I would give those test runs to Hamilton every time, he has superior car control, period. Hes just much less likely to put it into the wall. Too much over the limit, a few harmless spins? Who cares... Happens with everyone. How do you know it is not just that? We will find out in the first race who has the edge, I am pretty sure nothing changed from last year, at least not on the front... I would be happy to see others wiping the floor with Merc, but I am very sceptical about that.
@gefx0164
@gefx0164 3 жыл бұрын
@IVAN THE IRON Just checked that Albon spin, didn't remember exactly. That is not a snap oversteer kind of spin, he was just way to ambitious with the throtle on exit. A snappy/unstable car will break away on entry or mid corner, that simply wasn't that. Verstappens spin in Turkey was his own mistake, he took way too much exit kerb and the green stuff on a wet track. That has nothing do with the characteristics of the car. He was too close to the RP, turbulent air, understeered off, spun. Also wet weather stuff isn't a good indication on how the car handles, a slight misjudgement can send anyone into a spin in those conditions. Just watch a bunch of dry Red Bull onboards from last year, watch the steering wheel on corner entry and mid corner. There is no big pauses in the steering motion, or there is no big counter steer moments, that is a stable car. Also keep in mind that the majority of pro drivers prefer a slightly oversteery car, good rotation means you can carry more speed into corners while still being manageable. Other than those agreed :)

@@gefx0164 Were you watching Free Practise? The Red Bulls -- Verstappen and Albon -- were spinning all the time in free practise. The rear end instability was a very real problem. Check out Albon's free practise in Hungary, he was very tentative, like he had no confidence to push the car, in case it stepped out. It was not so obvious in the race when the cars are full of fuel.
@gefx0164
@gefx0164 3 жыл бұрын
@@TassieLorenzo Yeah i was watching free practices too, and I don't remember them "spinning all the time". Verstappen spun in FP3 in Hungary, past the apex on exit, low grip track after a full wet FP2. Again, too much throttle on exit, driver error, or could be something funky going in the power delivery. Albon complained about vibrations and stuff... Free practice is there for setting up the car which involves going under the limit and over the limit all the time until they find the sweetspot. Very much like testing. Also, if the Redbulls had problems like that you should actually see those problems more pronounced in the race with all the fuel in. I still don't see the very real problem you are talking about. Also I specifically remember Verstappen talking about lack of grip as a reason for him not being able to fight with Mercedes. Mentioning grip like that usually means overall grip, meaning he is happy with the balance of the car but it lacks the level of downforce or mechanical grip to be on par with the Mercs. Show me examples, onboard footage, interviews of them talking about lack of grip on the rear. Change my mind I am open :D I would even argue that non of the modern F1 cars has stability issues like that. Even the Williams is a pretty stable car. The difference in pace mostly comes from overall grip. Watch some old footage of the V10 era, Arrows, Miniardi. Some of those cars were like wild beasts, excteremly difficult to drive, going from snap oversteer to understeer in the matter of 3-5 corners, all over the place, constantly fighting with it. You don't see any of that now.

In 2019, the media was touting Ferrari as the best car through all the free practice sessions of the Australian Grand prix, even though the Merc was putting better lap times. I remember everyone gushing over how supple the Ferrari looked and how ragged the Merc looked through those practice sessions. Then on qualifying day, Merc is 0.7sec clear of Ferrari and everyone realizes that Merc was fast. I can't help but seeing a bit of deja vu here. Merc did not stop developing the 2020 car halfway through the season just to have a vacation, they focused on this year's car and I would find it very strange that they somehow messed it up. Although the nature of the regulations with the reduced floor area might favor Redbull and the other high rake cars. We shall see, but if it's a Merc 1-2 on Saturday, I won't be surprised at all.

It's funny how much negativity I see towards that approach. You could switch out a few words and say they are humble or grounded or not letting it get to their heads and all of a sudden it doesn't sound so bad. Language/wording is intrinsically linked to a company's culture so by saying this, it reaffirms the ethos that they never want to become complacent, that they don't automatically think they should be the best or pretend that they are not. Personally, I don't think they think of it is playing games or "pretending". Their humble wording reflects how they feel and go about their business. And that's very much why they have been so damn good. As a stark contrast, Arrivebene once when asked about yet another loss, simply stated "We are FERRARI, we SHOULD win". That was the moment, I really understood the culture difference between the teams and the silly self-entitlement at Marenello. I think they are working hard to change that, though.
