"Are you doing this to self soothe?" Seems like an odd comment to me. First of all, art making is inherently self soothing, regardless of audience numbers. Secondly, if an artist is getting decent streams but low numbers at shows, that just means they're not yet clear on who their audience is and how to reach them. They need mentors and management who truly understand them and believe in them. Case in point Tyla - her team believes in her vision, does the work to identify target audiences for her style, and they structure promotional material specifically for her audience's demographic. They made a dance challenge so audiences can join in on the vibes, and that gets them invested. Finding my audience has been my #1 conundrum as an artist myself. Popular advice I've gotten is to focus on other things and the audience will show up, and that doesn't work for me. I'm just throwing things up on the wall and seeing what sticks, as if I didn't receive any advice at all lmao. Why do we artists have to prove our right to exist in the industry so much? We're the talent. We're needed by everyone else in order for everyone else to make their money. I do wish healing for a lot of the authority figures in the industry, because this dismissive attitude towards artists is getting tiresome. We're expected to be bold on stage, and then meek (they call it "humble") around authority figures so that we're allowed to stick around? Make it make sense, that dynamic does not make it feel like the industry cares about safe spaces for us.

I suppose the reality is, music creation and distribution has become easier than ever making it a more saturated and competitive market than ever. 100,000 new tracks were uploaded to spotify on average in 2023. And because the marketing works best DIY style in the era of tiktok, it's understandable for music management to expect proof of concept of an artist's growth before taking them on. I'm sorry that you've been made to feel like you need to be a certain way or that you've received unhelpful advice in the past. Thanks for sharing your experience of that. And please don't be disheartened. We do need you. Find ways to do it on your terms, don't compromise who you are and make the best music you can make, that's soul food for you and maybe for many more! x
