i noticed when i have my natural hair out i see straight strands that come directly from the scalp. i don't kn if it's because i'm detangling too rough and braking the curl or if it's naturally so. i think i have 3c around my ends ,4a around my crown and 4b for my crown and when i have my hair in puffs or fros it look so frizzy with the straight strands. i'm so confused.

@@ohlala7536 exactly. Its good to leave your hair alone and covered from the elements for a while, as long as your moisturizing good then its fine. Ive had my weave in for 6 weeks so far. I'll take it out after the 8 week, but my hair is GROWING alot. Now what I DON'T agree with is women who protective style 24/7, never lets their hair rest and never treat their real hair aka shampooing, deep conditioning, moisturizing, hot oil treatments. They just get back to back protective styles or the don't take the wig off for months at a time which is Not good. Protective styles in moderation are great.
@HairByPierre

Ohlala I think it depends on the person and what they’re doing to their real hair. I grew my hair from my ears to my armpits in a year with only wearing my real hair. There’s a lot of naturals that got to hip length in 3 years and wore only their own hair. If someone is over manipulating, dying, overly straightening, not trimming properly.. then yea it will take longer. But you don’t have to wear weave to do low manipulation styles. A wash n go can even be a low manipulation style.

It's not rare at all. It's just that people tend to bleach and/or dye their hair at home and don't know what they're doing. It's best to go to a salon if you don't know what you're doing and are scared of any mistakes.

The hair growth thing is true! If I had not been doing a length check every month, I wouldn't know that my hair was growing (I'm mostly 4b). I went from collar bone length in April to bra strap now. My biggest tip to anyone returning to natural hair is to master YOUR hair not (someone elses) meaning give yourself a chance to learn and embrace everything about your unique hair because none of us have the same hair it may look similar but its not the same.. Alot of naturals will wash and deep condition their wigs or weaves but completely neglect their own hair which defeats the purpose of having a protective style in the first place. Yes its good to not over manipulate your hair but you can wear your own natural hair out and still keep it protected and manipulation to a minimal. I think we tend to use the term ( protective style) as an excuse to hide our natural hair and slap on a wig or weave that couldn't be further away from the texture of our natural hair ( straight) typically. I love to see the naturals who do protective style and they get a wig or weave that ACTUALLY mimics their own texture and not a europeans.

I loved your interesting perspective on protective styles. The first two years of being natural I never had protective styles(4 1/2 years now being a lazy natural lol).I had some breakage periods because of my lack of knowledge/experience but my hair was still thick and grew a little past my shoulders. However after the 2 year mark for some reason I have been convinced by others that I NEEDED protective styles requiring fake hair to continue growing my hair. No lie, it does definitely can aid somewhat in the process if done properly, but like you said it totally optional and not necessary. After listening to your take on this I realized that how damaging it can be for black women to think they solely only grow hair by wearing synthetic/another woman's hair. Thank you for making that point known.

Loved this video. My hair thrives on both protective styling and being out depending on the change of season. Summer is mini twists while fall and winter i maneuver between mini and straight hair. The only time i wear my hair out most of the time is in the spring.

This is everything! I really started to worry about the amount of shed hairs I was getting until I watched this! It all makes sense, my hair has grown from collarbone length to midback length in less than a year so of course shedding will seem to have increased. I was also worried that my hair wasn't growing but was getting bigger. It's been on my shoulders forever in its curly state. YES you don't need protective styling to grow natural hair, no one around me believed me so now I can show them this video, I hardly ever protective style and I live a rather cold windy place, I just take really good care of my hair, maintaining the moisture of my hair, I feel will have to put in the same efforts even in protective style. I have the same hair type and my hair has also become the slightest bit looser than it used to be when it was shorter. I love this video!

I’m glad you created this video because I’m “mhmm”ing and nodding my head to everything you said lol. My hair is starting to get “long” (about armpit length when pulled straight) and I’m noticing a lot of things that had me like....whaaat is going on lolol

I thought my hair wasn't growing at all until I looked at an old photo of me 2 years ago and it's a huge difference, you are so right about hair not showing length, but it gets bigger because my hair is way bigger, thicker and voluminous now.

Truth on those trims, especially if you’re not straightening and/or dying your hair. For me, I’ve added protectively styling recently bc my hair seems to be at a plateau (4-5 inches from waist goal), so I’m hoping it’ll help; however, the “help” is probably more mental
