Broken bearing after seal replacement. Reason for damage was over tightening of hub retainer nuts causing bearing to not spin and sieze up.

Its impossible to tell from where the video ended with all that grease and not having pulled the race and used a micrometer, if the axle housing bearing spindle area was damaged where the bearing cone races sit as they could have spun and ruined the housing which means a huge expense to rebuild that axle end or be replacing the whole housing. Fortunate that the hub never parted ways with the truck and whomever put that together last never torqued the outer locking nut to the inner nut as there is no way the outside nut should be able to be spun off by hand with a two nut system, yes the inner one should be able to spin right off without any tools once the outer nut is off. This goes to show that if a mechanic or for that matter a do it yourself-er didn't have a clue what they were doing, this is the bad day you end up with or worse and sadly there are mechanics out there who don't have a clue and shouldn't be allowed near a tonka toy, never mind an actual truck.

Yeah I’m just wondering whoever did the repair job previously will they have to pay for that fuck up
@charlesb42673 жыл бұрын
@@terrellscaife2411 That is a very good question and I would suspect in a situation like this its one thing to point a finger but to prove without a doubt that it was the fault of the prior mechanic its pretty tough and could claim that the unit was not brought back to them for examination and bla bla bla. And who is to say it was a mechanic, the owner of the truck would be better able to answer as to where the maintenance had been done. But poor workmanship is a thing that certainly would have caused deaths on the road over the years and as well good licensed mechanics can be pushed to do shoddy fast work in a shop if the shop leans on them to produce or get a pink slip. But yet any issues fall back on the mechanic that signs off on it they are at fault. I have a friend ( actually a few heavy duty mechanic friends ) who is licensed to do CVIP's ( that is a Canadian acronym for Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program ) and at times he has been approached by trucking companies to do a fast quicky inspection to pass a truck or trailer they know full well has issues and he says either I do it properly or you are free to ask some other shop/mechanic ... its MY name on the line !.
@terrellscaife24113 жыл бұрын
Wow you have a friend that does Canadian DOT inspections and I guess it would be hard to point the finger at the last person that did the job because so many other factors could come out to play
@charlesb42673 жыл бұрын
@@terrellscaife2411 Well I should clarify that if its a licensed mechanic that signs off on the work, its his rear that is on the line. So lets say they have some newbie lacky in the shop and he is doing the work, who signs off on it ... so again it falls back on the licensed mechanic who may be the shop foreman for example who signs off the job. Never the less with what I saw in this video, if the outer nut is not torqued to the inner nut with this style of retention system, that is a big fail right there and impossible to really hold a perfect wheel end bearing end play. With what I have done on my own trucks with wheel ends over the years I use a dial indicator to know exactly what I have when setting up a bearing assembly so there is no guess work, and I have closely inspected the bearings and if in any doubt replace the bearing sets rather then take any chances. That way I can sleep at night knowing I cut no corners, wheel ends, steering components, tires, not something to f around with at all as this video and far worse is the reality of what can and does happen.

That's why you're supposed to torque it down hard and then back it off. To set both bearings AND seal.

Unfortunately 9 out of 20 wheel seals and bearings fail due to improper installation but for all the master techs myself included everyone is quick to run and whine about the new guy or something of that nature because in the mechanics world the Cover your own ass disease is a real problem I have been working on trucks now for 16 years and when everyone is bad mouthing someone else I actually figured it out most the time it was a younger or newer tech doing the work while the more experienced guys are twiddling there thumbs we all have done our time but something to remember is that if your a lead tech then you need to act like one there is a lot of would have been mechanics that ran into to many shit leaders who didn't teach and do their jobs and what's even worse is these younger techs are working in fast paced work environments when they are not ready to and all you guys saying how good of a mechanic you are now 😀 just remember you messed up to and someone else paid for your lesson

No spanner sockets? What kind of shop is this? A training facility? BUY SOME TOOLS! Get a torch & cut the bearing off. Clean it up & get it on the road!
