When you're gluten-free, you're likely to hear a lot of ridiculous things. In this video, I give examples of things that people have said to me. If you have celiac disease, a gluten allergy, a gluten intolerance, or have to be on a gluten-free diet, I'm sure you can relate! Living with celiac disease and/or being gluten-free is already tough enough, but these things can make it even harder.
Has anyone said any of these to you about being gluten-free? What is the craziest thing you've heard? Let me know in the comments. I can't wait to hear!
Also, if you're ever in a situation where you're unsure if something is safe to eat or drink (like me with the Corona beer), make sure to check out the Celiac Disease Foundation website (celiac.org). This page, in particular, would have saved me from that "glutening":

I’m gluten free! After a blood test in the late 90’s a doc diagnosed me as celiac, after my symptoms, and gluten intolerance didn’t exist then, because they didn’t know what they know now. My husband doesn’t believe I have it but I eat gluten free all the time. Never had a biopsy to prove it. I have multiple food allergies and won’t attend dinners and I’ve been told I’m unsociable, I’m told the same if I bring my own food and show up to family dinners. I also have multiple food intolerances and allergies. No one believes I have so many issues with food.

Same here. Celiac and numerous food allergies (and other allergies). I've had people on purpose contaminating my food and then mocking me when I became extremely sick and ended up in hospital, making fun of me, telling the entire town that I'm "just a fussy eater", telling me that "my Celiac and allergies only exist in my mind and are not real". Or variants of this, such as "this never existed when I was young", "in my days people/children ate what they got given", and the usual "it's all just in your head, it's not real". After a lifetime of this, I have had to realize that I just have to stay friendless and single if I don't want to get terribly sick and end up in extreme pain. I can't take any more abuse and I can't risk getting made sick on purpose.

in Argentina the chef and the waitress must know about celiac, and every food place must have at list one option for us.... I live in Toronto and I can not understand why when I ask for the same in Canada, they think I'm asking for too much.... Argentina is 3rd word country and could handle better than Canada celiac problems

Restaurants aren’t REQUIRED to do so, true. Celiac disease affects at least 1 in 100 people, though, plus there are countless others that need a strict gluten-free diet for health reasons (including avoiding cross-contact). They are alienating a large customer base by not offering safe options-especially when you consider that many families may choose not to eat there if they are unable to be flexible. Also, restaurants are required to accurately report and advise on allergens in the foods they are serving. In Canada, they are required to provide an ingredient list. Many restaurants don’t do this, or offer a gluten-free menu with options that aren’t actually gluten-free.

Thank you for this video! I just got a diagnosis. I'm Italian, and here there are soo many gluten free options in markets, but there almost aren't people who actually know what does being coeliac mean. Many ask me "Can you drink fruit juice?", or like "Omg sorry that has rice in it, it has gluten!!!" It's very very common to be uninformed... Lots of love and pizza (gluten free lol)

Love this video! Thank you for the laugh. I can definitely empathize. One time I called a restaurant to find out about gluten free options and when they said their chips are gluten free, I asked if they used the same fryer to fry other gluten-containing foods. She said yes, they do, “but the oil gets like really, really hot, so you should be totally fine!” Also, lately I’ve been experiencing the “depends on how celiac you are” comments. One waiter said his celiac isn’t that bad, so he’s able to eat the pizza. If he truly has celiac, he doesn’t understand his disease at all.

i am currently 12 years old and i am officially a diagnosed coeliac. i turned twelve only last month btw. i went to the doctor one day about dizziness and heart palpitations, and the doctor wanted to check my blood assuming it was low iron. i also had an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) to see if it was due to my heart, and my heart was fine. anyways my iron was very low, and my doctor thought the reason for that may either be heavy menstrual bleeding, not enough red meat in the diet, or coeliac disease. at this point me and my family thought it was a diet issue and never even thought i would have been coeliac disease as i had zero symptoms. three months later i had another blood test to check my iron levels after heaving more red meat and being on iron supplements, and i also did a coeliac serology ( which is basically just a blood test that tests for specific antibodies)my iron had gone up to the normal range but was still pretty low, and to our surprise i came back positive for coeliac disease. it was a big shock and my parents were convinced i didn't have it, and i was freaking out as i was extremely scared to have a gastroscopy, so we made a plan to try avoid that. until we actually saw my blood results we realised my results to the coeliac serology were extremely high and my mum read on coeliac Australia that i had to have a gastroscope to confirm a diagnosis. i was extremely scared. but don't worry i had it and i was fine and it wasn't bad, so if your in the same position i am a 12 year old girl who most of the time faints when i get needles do not worry its ok :) . anyways after an appointment with my gastroenterologist he booked me in for a gastroscope in a week! and guess what! i came back positive for coeliac disease 🤭. i also live with two siblings and two parents who all eat gluten, and they all support me. my family are extremely careful about cross contamination and even bought me my own seperate toaster. i never had any symptoms of coeliac disease, when i was on a gluten challenge for my gastroscopy, i found i felt slightly bloated and overall not as good as i did when i was gluten free. now i have been fully gluten free since august 16th 2023 when i had my gastroscopy. i'm going on a family road trip to Queensland and i am kind of worried because i'm still new to this and am slightly in the phase of "what do i actually have to eat? there is nothing!" anyways wish me luck and i am truly sorry for this very long comment but thank you for reading i appreciate it. Bye!

Well, my mother's dead! She had type 1 diabetes. 39 years without her 💔 😢 I'm small bowel biopsy diagnosed non tropical sprue 36 years ago. I'd rather have my celiac/sprue than what my mom went through. Maybe that's why I don't whine about the trivial things like food or how miserable celiac is. Y'all keep trying to have everything focused on you. I'm not impressed. It's just food and if you accidentally eat some gluten, I guarantee you'll survive. Now I'm not telling anyone to go out and cheat on a gf diet (I don't cheat) but, the drama does get old.

Thank you for your words. Only found your channel a few days ago. I was diagnosed only 6 months ago, a few days before my 43 birthday. It was years of miss diagnose and the last 2 years I had frequent visits to the hospital. Usually people tell me that “no worries, in Christmas you just have a feast, it is only one day”. Without the diagnose, I spent Christmas in bed… and I have hardly eaten anything. Also, since I’m recovering from malnutrition because of the lack of nutrients, my boss thinks that I can no longer be sick since I’m on a diet. I already knew what was celiac disease since my brother in law is celiac, but I didn’t knew that the psychological weight was so big. Kisses from Portugal to everyone

I have RA, so I must avoid gluten, dairy, and red meat; otherwise, my body will start aching or I get sick. I got fries at the stadium and threw them all up. Apparently, the fries had batter on them. There wasn't a SINGLE gluten-free or dairy-free option there. The combo of the three can make eating out nearly impossible.

It actually happened tonight with me that’s how I came to find your videos 😂 basically I accidentally ate something containing gluten which my dad served for me so I assumed it was gluten free but I had this feeling it wasn’t so I checked the label and there it was in bold “ BARLEY “ 🙄 I started feeling sick afterwards and my dad goes “ oh stop being dramatic you have been eating gluten your whole life your not going to die “ !! I was fuming especially because he knows how important my gluten free diet is for my health - I do understand though that I have only fairly recently been diagnosed with celiac disease so I do acknowledge that It’s not quite a habit in my family and it does take time ESPECIALLY for my dad 😅 but it annoys me so much how ignorant and inconsiderate it is to say stuff like that and obviously serving me gluten isn’t good for me however I do feel bad for him because he told me after that he wasn’t thinking and just saw it and thought I would enjoy it , I felt so bad but I knew I had to stick up for myself 😕

As a very good rule of thumb, trust no one who offers you food. Unless you’re there while they cook it and you previously go over all the rules again. I’ve heard horror stories of family members and even mothers knowingly giving gluten to celiacs. 😡🙈 As a celiac, we got to look out for ourselves and don’t take the risk!! Also, I’ve recently become aware we should not eat fries in restaurants. There are few instances it can actually be safe, but I got the worst illness when I only ate fries at a place that had a dedicated frier. I was so excited and the French fries were nice and crispy. Turns out fries often have wheat flour thus making them crispy. Why didn’t I know this 🙄 maybe other celiacs do and only I was the dumbo that trusted them.

Never eat at restaurants! You can't trust them, they all think we Celiacs are just on a fad diet. I've heard comments from restaurant chefs along the lines of "there was this woman she demanded gluten free food but then she wolfed down all this wheat bread and she was just fine afterwards"! As far as they are concerned, we are all just hysterical women. As for family members and friends - after decades of "friends" on purpose contaminating my food with gluten and then mocking me when I ended up in hospital because I got so sick, I have realized it's just better to stay single and friendless than risk getting so sick again.

4:15 I only go McD if I deed to use the toilet. I dont support that chain with anything. Robyn, you should feel lucky you have not go there. I always wonder why people eat there that sad, tasteless meal (only taste of full sugar and salt, nothing else). I would rather choose to be not social with people who go to McD for lunch, or brekkie. Similar FOMO problem with smoking. Most of the people smoking and having fun in the smoking area. They talk, laugh, etc.. Non smokers left alone. If I go with them to the smoking room, I am passive smoker and I will smell like an ashtray. Or I can choose to sit alone. Also smokers find weird if I go out to get some air and I dont smoke just standing there. "hey, what are you doing" and security came: "hey you can not smoke in there" when I just stand outside and breathe fresh air. I dont feel outsider just because I have my own thoughts and having different consciousness than others. Iam vegan, I dont go to steak bar, or McD. I eat gluten free because I feel terribly sick and down if I eat gluten. 5:17 I do the same if somebody is stupid and dont understand I dont eat gluten or dairy and think I am just picky. :') When we work together 8-12 hours in the same room I tell them, "yes, give me that dairy cheese or milky cake but it would be horrible experience for both of us. If they dont get it I will explain why they would have horrible experience just to stand next to me (apart from watch me in pain they can expect me bloating and constantly release really stinky gases). After that said they dont try to convince me to force feed me with anything I dont eat. On top of it I can not drink most of the alcohol because of sulfites. You can imagine how many people try to convince me to drink this and drink that and they dont want understand what it means I can not drink.

You p much nailed it. Personally... I would agree with the other party, in a “haha yeah, what’s your point?” Sense. Having a gluten intolerance is much more easy for me to deal with than a dairy, peanut, or soy allergy since those other ingredients are snuck into everything and even the touch or scent of something like peanuts can cause immediate asphyxiation.

@@robynsglutenfreeliving I have really lived up to my namesake when it comes to finding gluten free food, once I went camping in Ontario and the fish and chip stand at the campground had gluten free fish & chips and the lady there was gluten free (Sauble Falls fyi) ! I couldn’t have planned it any better ! Last time I ate at a chip truck, I found out the operator was gluten free and so was her chip wagon, so I had poutine ! Hey! There are lots of places that you can eat-they don’t need to be dedicated gluten-free, though it does make it simpler. A couple of my favourite places in Toronto are Almond Butterfly (completely gluten-free) and Riz (certified gluten-free kitchen). You can also download the “Find Me Gluten-free” app where people will post reviews about restaurants with specifics about how celiac-safe they are. I’ve also found great gluten-free options at places like Boston Pizza and Jack Astor’s if you’re looking for chains. Subway has GF bread, but it’s best to ask them to change gloves and grab fresh cheese/veggies from the back.

I work in a Retirement Home and I had a conversation with one of my Server friends about what I can and can't eat (I've talked openly at work about my having Celiac Disease and my dietary restrictions). One evening, he offered me something that I knew would make me sick, so I said, "as yummy as that looks, no, thank you". He was disappointed that I wouldn't partake, so I thought of offering him the opportunity to try some of my treats to show him that I really wasn't missing out. So after visiting my favourite GF bakery one day before my shift, I brought in a butter tart so he could see for himself that "the best really does happen to be Gluten Free". Initially, he accepted the offer, but when it came time to actually take the butter tart home, he made the excuse, "Oops. Sorry, I'm too full" Like it would have killed him to take the butter tart home with him and return the container when he had more room for the butter tart. It felt as though he was turning his nose up at my food, without even TRYING IT first. I had a Supervisor at the same job that told me that she's gluten intolerant (supposedly gives her IBS), but she allows herself a cheat day on her birthday so she can binge herself stupid on a wheat-based cake. There are 2 staff at that Home that have Celiac Disease, and this former supervisor gave my non-GF coworkers the impression that the other staff member with Celiac Disease and I are making a big deal out of nothing, that we can cheat whenever we want and nothing will happen, and that we're doing it (eating gluten free) for attention. Both incidents have me frustrated enough to plan a Celiac Disease PowerPoint presentation for both Wellness and Culinary departments, since we both have to serve residents that have gluten intolerances.
@robynsglutenfreeliving
@robynsglutenfreeliving 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Christine! 😄 Thanks for your comment. First of all, I'm so sorry to hear that people at work are giving you a hard time-I definitely agree with that Powerpoint idea. Especially since there may be residents with celiac or food allergies! Second, I too am SO sick of people turning their noses up at gluten-free food. It was one of the main reasons why I developed my gluten-free baking courses. Sure, there are some not-so-great gluten-free options, but some of it is just as good as the regular version. (Including my favourite butter tart bakery-coincidence? haha) Totally feel your pain!
@christineheynen517
@christineheynen517 3 жыл бұрын
@@robynsglutenfreeliving: Hey, Robin. Love the idea of GF baking courses. People need to learn that GF creations don't taste as revolting as they might think (if they did, you and I, and other people with Celiac would have gone extinct a long time ago). In terms of dealing with Mr. "Gluten Free tastes disgusting, so I don't wanna try it", I take the high road with the Culinary friend that turned his nose up at the butter tart. I've talked with the Culinary Services manager and my Assistant General Manager about the presentation plans, and once we have meetings again, I want to speak at the Culinary Department's May department meeting to give them the lowdown on Celiac). I'm planning a lunch and learn session that includes a 100% GF menu, to give my colleagues an idea of what's out there. Complete with the butter tarts my friend turned his nose up at. Only my AGM knows about the GF menu so far. There's more than one way to train a horse ;) . Now that you mention the possibility of having residents that have gluten intolerances and other food allergies, we do. I gear a section on the PowerPoint presentation specifically to Seniors that have Celiac, so Culinary staff and my cohorts in Wellness understand what happens to the residents when they eat something they shouldn't. I know of at least one resident on one of our Independent Living floors that seems to have unconfirmed Celiac Disease (I've spoken with her and she's told me that she has diarrhea when she eats wheat, barley, rye, etc., and I've heard reports from my fellow PSWs saying that it's common for this resident to have diarrhea--well, DU-U-UH!!!) But the frustrating thing is, Servers give her food that makes her ill, and they don't seem to care. Time to change that "just a little bit won't hurt" attitude. I can't wait for this pandemic to end.

I have pictures. I showed his pediatrician and guess what? She took my word for it. Now he gets a doctor note whenever we need one. The doctor didn’t do any special test that made what she said more true then what we went thru. In fact she told me a elimination diet is the most accurate way to find and diagnose food allergies.

I got Celiac and numerous food allergies (and other allergies). The manager AND the 'chef' came out to explain to my wife and I that the food had ZERO gluten (and a celiac delivery driver eats it all the time without issue). The cocky chef even brought the label from the box to the table to "prove" that the food was safe. I read the label and the FIRST TWO WARNINGS were "CONTAINS WHEAT and BARLEY" I was MAAAAAAAAD!
