Wonderful lesson. One other thought: add ‘pauses’ occasionally in solo; say, for 2 or 3 beats (or even longer). It gives the soloist a chance to ‘breathe’ and for the listener, it is a refreshing break from unending eighth and quarter notes.

I started researching improvisation about 5 years ago because I just wanted to play without sheet music. I thought people who improvised had magical talent I didn't possess. What I've learned is great improvisation happens in the practice room. Many stories of the great improvisers tell they spent several years practicing hours each day developing their improvisation skills.

Learning to play guitar made me realize how comparatively difficult the piano is to solo well on. I think it's because of how straightforward the piano is--no bends, no vibrato, no way to change the basic sound. Synths and organs aren't so bad, but good phrasing on piano is a real challenge--it's very barebones in a way that forces you to have really excellent fundamentals.

I love piano...but Im now 31 y'old and just got myself a 61 kesy keyboard..now I am practising as a beginner at this time..It couldn't stop me,keep on playing whatever notes just to memorizes all the notes..today is my Day3,have fun with it..

Interesting approaching this from the point of view of an ex guitarist. My keyboard skills are rubbish but jamming to a chord progression on keys I find reasonably easy. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that keyboard players are usually good music readers while guitarists are notoriously bad at reading music and have to learn to play listening to the notes to make sure they work.

Hi Sam and Lisa, thank you for a very good tute. I am very much a beginner when it comes to soloing. What I have found to be of a huge help is to have a good strong rhythm /and beat. Eg bass and cymbal. Many digital keyboards have a built in rhythm function with rock or jazz which help lead one to feeling their way into soloing. ‘Irealpro’ which is downloadable has rhythm functions also. Listen to other pianists on. Eg pieces like ‘Autumn Leaves and ‘So What’. As Sam says know the key of the piece that you are practicing and be familiar with the major and minor scales. There are lots of tutorials that teach licks. Many are available to free download.🤗

What’s the difference between soloing and improvising ?
@musicman89382 жыл бұрын
Soloing is based on a particular pattern according to the scale you use. Soloing can be planned before hand Improvising is a freestyle thing. It's spontaneous and right on the spot. Improvisations can be solos too. You can do both at the same time.
