In March 2021, on the eve of a Europa League game against Tottenham Hotspur, Dinamo Zagreb manager Zoran Mamić was handed an almost five-year prison sentence.
His sentencing was the culmination of years of fraud, corruption, and the mass siphoning off of money at Dinamo Zagreb, and indeed, throughout much of Croatian football.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the ongoing crisis at Croatia's biggest and most successful football club, the Mamić brothers at the heart of it, and what the future might hold for Dinamo Zagreb.

Great vid Alfie! As a Slovenian with a Croatian father, I really appreciate the effort you put into your pronunciations, and to help you getting even better at it, here's a tip, in slavic languages, the J is pronounced like an english Y (like in yellow), that should smooth out the most common problem english speakers have with pronouncing slavic words (like Dejan Lovren, imagine the name being written as Deyan). Looking forward to more from you, thanks for all the research and effort you put into your content!

Still hoping for a "What on Earth is Going on at Sunderland?" Or maybe a "Fall and Fall of Sunderland" Sunderland til I die showed our relegation to league one and failed attempt to get promoted back to the Championship, but a detailed look at the Premier League years before our relegation would be great, also looking at how things went after STID. The amount of bad luck and awful decisions and from board level down to the pitch is staggering. In the Ellis Short era, and then the Stewart Donald era. -England losing against Iceland essentially resulting in us losing Allardyce, a great manager for us at the time, only for him to be sacked by England after 1 game. -At one point having the 6th highest wage bill in the Premier League with nothing really to show for it. -The purchase of Ricky Alvarez, not playing him, trying to back out of signing him, losing a lawsuit to Inter Milan and still suffering financial implications to this day. -Signing the appalling Jack Rodwell and being financially crippled for years again -Signing a completely past it Emmanuel Eboue who was then released 3 weeks later as he was banned from football for unpaid agent debts -Playing Adam Johnson when the execs knew he was under investigation for sexual activity with a child. -Well known drinking culture among players, general poor professionalism. -Darron Gibson getting arrested for drink driving after a car crash. Gibson also filmed on social media off his tits bad mouthing the team and manager whilst still a player. -Letting our top scorer leave in January in our Championship relegation season -Selling our top scorer in January in our first League 1 promotion push -Replacing him with Will Grigg for 3 million quid on a league 1 budget because our owner at the time wanted to be a big shot. Grigg was a failure since and never even wanted to come. -Losing twice at Wembley in League 1 including in the playoff final in the 95th minute. -Missing out on the playoffs after the season was cancelled due to COVID -Losing again in the playoffs last season -Losing last season's top scorer with 30 goals (Wyke) and our Captain (Power) to Wigan for free in the summer. We've made a solid start to this season and made some decent signings under our new owner, but the whole story of the last 10 years is an absolute car crash worth a deep dive.

Absolutely correct and precise overview, one thing though that could be more pointed out is that Mamic had and still have an opposition in a majority of the fans and those fans are going through hell just for being against him and its been going on like that for years. That, together with the state of the stadium is the main reason why Dinamos home games have such low attendance.

Latvian Football could be an interesting topic to do a video like this on, since 2 of the clubs in the top flight cannot play or have been banned. Ventspil have been banned for 7 years from football for match fixing and Noah were banned from registering new players due to unpaid fees and no longer have 11 players to field, so they have forfeited every game but 1 this season. I don't know everything because I don't really follow Latvian Football, but I would love more information on topic, because it seems juicy

As an avid Dinamo Zagreb supporter and Zdravko Mamić hater I have to say you have made fantastic video and even better analysis of the club and Mamić brothers! Very very well researched, accurate and objective facts given. You have outdone yourself, this is your best video yet. Fun fact: you have mentioned Tomislav Horvatinčić in the video, as the man who killed several people either by car or boat. He is former director at Dinamo and was charged for money laundering and tax evasion while working at the club. But of course, charges were dropped in 2012. Him and Zdravko Mamić are also very good friends. Overall this is movie material right here! And a reason for constant headache among Dinamo supporters.

While Dinamo is without a doubt the best club in Croatia it isn’t the most supported. Hnk Hajduk Split is the most supported club in the country, you can check average attendances from any era of croatian football history and see how big the gap is between Hajduk’s home and away support compared not just to Dinamo but to the rest of the league. Even without stadium attendance, Hajduk is supported throughout the whole region of Dalmatia and even parts of Slavonia while Dinamo’s support is mostly based in the capital of Zagreb. I’m not shitting on Dinamo but saying that they’re the most supported club in the country is just an assumption based upon the fact that they’ve been dominating the league for the last 15 years.

Here is some latest news about this story. Zdravko Mamic is still in Bosnia and said he corrupted the judges who sentenced him to 6 years. He posted pictures and conversations where they can be seen celebrating and having fun together. He said he paid them all. Those judges are now in pre-trial detention, and the one who admitted to bribing them is still free in Bosnia. An even more bizarre situation in this story.

Excellent video. I would like to point out that although Mamic is undoubtedly corrupt, he is one of many of the peas in the same pod. I’m Croatian, and although I am supportive of the fact that we gained independence, it left a massive opportunity for corruption via crony capitalism. The country stinks of it, and football is no different. Dinamo is the most infamous case, because the Mamic brothers were/are at the top of the pile, but almost all football clubs are run by guys cut from the same cloth, proclaiming they don’t want corruption, yet would commit such acts if they had the power to. One story in particular would be NK Zadar president holding a gun to Subasic’s head forcing him to sign a contract extension to ensure he wouldn’t leave the club for free, just as an example. Thank you for the content, this is the first video I’ve watched of yours and will be taking a deep dive into your channel regardless of what club/country your videos are centred around 👍🏻

I think the banner was directed against manager Claude Puel not the chairman. I also think Alfie could do a whole video on fan misbehavior in Ligue 1 this season. Groups of rival supporters fighting have delayed multiple games and it seems there's an issue with fans throwing things at players every weekend. Nice fans actually came onto the field to attack Marseille's players after Dmitri Payet threw a bottle back into the crowd. It sure looks like some French fans have lost their damn minds.

@@AdamCanavan12 I don't know where you're from but I'm an American. The US is violent place with too many damned guns but one thing we don't have is the kind of sports-related violence I see in Europe. You'd almost never see a group of American fans go out onto the field and try to attack players like those Nice supporters did for example and the kind of hooliganism that used to exist in England and elsewhere would simply be unthinkable here. I've always wondered why the fan cultures are so different from one side of the Atlantic to the other.
@SantomPh
@SantomPh 2 жыл бұрын
@@BiggieTrismegistus dunno, every time the Broncos won the Super Bowl Denver ended up being a mess the next day. As for fan culture, the franchise system of US sports mean that very few teams have a rooted support in a location (eg the NY Yankees) and even less with an already established rival (eg NY Mets). As any Dodgers or Nets or Bobcats fan will tell you, there are plenty of fans who have no club thanks to franchises moving and closing. Hence there are few ties to large fanbases compared to European football since the clubs are mostly transient. On a NBA,NHL,MLB etc level there are pretty much no organized hooligan groups based on clubs. Who would they fight? In the USA a sports team is normally something people like to support and watch but not embody. In Croatia teams can have associations with the military, far-right groups, crooked politicians, the mafia and the devil Himself. I don't think Americans would pick up rifles in support of the LA Lakers or the Detroit Red Wings because sports is supposed to entertain in the USA, it's been largely divorced from politics. A literal game.

@Toniboi
@Toniboi 2 жыл бұрын
@@Business-scope I think its different because 1. Bayern is still majority fan owned, and 2. neither club has the same dominance and control over their countries football and youth systems that Dinamo has. Additionally, Dinamo has money too, but the fans don't see any of it. While Man U and Bayern still complete big money moves for players like Sancho. Dinamo can't even renovate their own stadium properly.

@Toniboi

@@Business-scope they had the money to improve the stadium and the cities approval to do so. It has nothing to do with the cities funds. they are a private entity with their own money to expand and renovate their stadium which they did not do because the money most likely went to someone's pockets. And regardless, I don't know what your argument is. We shouldn't pay attention to Dinamo because other clubs have the same problem? Just because others are doing the same thing doesnt mean the topic shouldn't be covered.

THANK YOU! I have, for the better half of 4 years, been SO curious about the corruption of the Croatian league, considering the fan protests at Euro 2016, and the "11 in a row" consecutive league titles from 2006-2017, frequent European group stage appearances, and then subsequent 2nd golden age of the Croatian national team. I had gotten the gist of Dinamo Zagreb's leaders being in major roles to the Croatian football federation itself (yikes). But I had no idea it was THIS bad, and that they're actually pretty fucked at the moment.

You should do one about Cruzeiro from Brasil. There was only 5 Brazilian giants that never got relegated til 2016, my team Internacional that got relegated in 2016 after a lot of cases of corruption and etc. São Paulo, flamengo and Santos, and the new giant relegated is Cruzeiro, a rich club with a huge infrastructure that went through the same situation as Internacional but now they are going to the third year in Serie B. I think it would be interesting to "investigate" Brazilian teams. There's so much dirt going on here.

They're also one of the most hated clubs in Croatia for the same reason. A lot of its success is down to Mamic's total hegemony over Croatian football. With his hold over the national team as well as syphoning tons of public money in and out of the club, it was next to impossible for any player not to sign up to his agency and Dinamo. There are only a handful of player who tried their luck without signing for Mamic/Dinamo and succeeded. With all the best talent being amassed by Dinamo, the league was dominated by them and their satellite clubs to which they would loan out their surplus players, thus making the league uncompetitive. As a result, people lost all interest and the stadiums were largely empty. Dissatisfaction also escalated with the rise of right-wing groups whose antics supposedly aimed to hurt the corruption in croatian football, but just hurt the reputation of the whole country.

You like making videos on more obscure clubs. And Bodø-glimt kind of just put themselves on the map with their crushing of Roma. So how about a video on them. As it is a pretty cool story. Club almost went bankrupt in 2006, after already being relegated from the first division due to financial issues, but through a loan, smart transfer dealings and sales. The club eventually won their first ever league title last year. And is in their first ever european competition this year. Where they battered Romas bench team
