Are there any other small owls that are similar in size to an Little owl (like an elf owl or something around that size range) that has a more relaxed temperament? I'm hoping to get one around that size in the future but if they're all quite stubborn then maybe I'll opt for a rufous legged one instead as my first owl.

This video is interesting for a few different reasons. This video is basically about a cute red headed girl holding a male barn owl, talking about her opinion of the best beginners owl. The answer was given in the first couple of minutes. In the next 12+ minutes, I'm not sure what she was trying to convey. Anyway, what I was hoping she would talk about is the laws in each country pertaining to keeping owls in captivity. Here in California for example, you need a falconry license and you can only have a great horned owl. With the Vegan Hippie Channel being watched by thousands of viewers, there's going to be people who think they could just go out and take a owl for a pet. We're talking all around the world. Could you imagine what's going to happen to those owls? OSH :-(

They're not hard to train but neither are eagle owls. But I would just as well not recommend a great grey owl for beginners for the same reason I wouldn't recommend eagle owls for beginners: they're big and can therefore do more harm if you make a mistake.

Take this from personal experience as some one who is not afiscaly a snake handler but has owned many different snakes at one time if you whant a snake and its your first one go for children python the are very small and known to be very well handed and there bites aren't leathal or hurt very much but if you whant a larger one go Dimond python they grow up to about 2 meaters wich is a larger size but only needs to eat rats at full length and if handeled asoften as you can at the degining and then about 3 to 4 times a week it will be quite placid and the same with an owl try having the snake out with other people around

What about Great Horned owls for beginners? Would that be a terrible idea? I have cats, and I wouldn't get rid of them for anything, so would it be better to keep an owl outside? If so, would it do well in an outdoor aviary? Sorry for so many questions, I know pretty much nothing about keeping owls but I love them. And I want to make sure it's something I'd want to deal with before I go through the trouble required to get a permit where I live.

TheCraftingCat if you aren't going to work with the animal EVERYDAY..and i mean everyday.. take it out for flight training and to hunt multiple times a week on property..etc.. not to mention great horned owls are huge and don't train that easily. Don't get an animal just because you like them and the way they look. Because in most cases.. owls and birds of prey simply look at their owners like refrigerators. (Food dispensers).. not to mention the massive amount of money it takes to feed them everyday and the exotic vet check ups and bills it takes to own one. Don't do it.

I agree. Falconers who work with owls will tout the Eurasian Eagle as a great beginner owl. Not only are they huge but they can easily live 40-50 years! People use them as stepping stones and then cast them aside. I think it's best to get an owl that you are going to commit to and learn how to work with that owl. Here in the US there is no federal permit to get a Eurasian Eagle owl. I could go an buy one. I think that's baaaad and I really hope over government steps in and stops this from happening. I'm seeing more and more Eagle owl ads selling to anyone. Not good!

some of this information conflicts with information I have received via my falconry course in the UK and many Books I have read. Small birds are very vulnerable to feeding problems if you intend to fly them. It's very easy to kill them by getting the flying weight incorrect. Little owls are quite nasty in nature too and very hard to fly. I have been advised to go for either a Bengal Eagle owl or an African Spotted eagle owl. Both my wife and I have handled them with no problems. I would love a Barn owl but have been advised against it as a first owl
@skinbyrdable
@skinbyrdable 7 жыл бұрын
What you're saying here corresponds with what I said in the video: I said that the little owl is more stubborn for example as well as the rufous legged owl. This shows in flying training especially. It makes sense that it's easy to kill them by getting the flying weight wrong but in my opinion, you shouldn't own an owl before you know how to make it reach its flying weight SAFELY. That's the problem in falconry today: a lot of falconers don't care if they kill their birds, as long as it flies good during demonstrations so they can get money off of their birds. And that's not something I wanna be a part of. In this video, I don't recommend getting an eagle owl because of the safety issues.
@richardseekins24
@richardseekins24 7 жыл бұрын
I agree the birds safety has to come first. Last month I spent a week with a professional falconer doing whats called the raptor award learning how to handle all forms of birds of prey. My wife and I intend to get an owl later this year and really wanted a barn owl. Our tutor advised we go for a larger owl as mentioned as he says the window of opportunity to treat a sick bird is greater the larger the bird is hence the advice to get one of the two eagle owls mentioned. Clearly you seem to be doing will with your barn owl hence my interest in your videos and this has me wondering if we could still go for a barn owl? Regardless we feel comfortable with an eagle owl too as they are very nice in nature. We don't want anything larger than a Bengal as they get too heavy on the arm all day.
@skinbyrdable
@skinbyrdable 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry about the window of opportunity to treat a sick bird because ALL owls are very vulnerable to sickness but if you feed them right and keep them in the right conditions, they can become very old without EVER having to see a vet. Lookie is 5 years old now and has never gotten sick (knock on wood). I know a falconer who owns only big raptors and several of them have gotten sick and she had to pay for very expensive treatments and it lasted 1.5 year before she and the vet were finally sure the bird would make it. In my opinion, you should totally go for a barn owl especially if that's what you wanted in the first place. Eagle owls are kind in nature IF you raise them very well. But if it's your first owl, you're definately going to make mistakes unless your mentor can stay with you and your owl every minute of the day to correct you when you do. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best and you can always reach out to me if you need me :-)

It's a tricky choice. Now, when I was choosing my raptor I eliminated all but owls. I too was told to go for a large species. So many considerations, besides health. Housing being an important one, a Bengal will need huge housing and space to fly. Also, and I think this should be a big decider, what do you actually want to do with your owl? How do you want it to fit into your life? Who will be handling it? I wouldn't want a Bengal flying round my house or sitting on my shoulder whilst sat watching TV, for example! You can assume you'll have your bird for somewhere around 20 years. You can't change your mind later on. If you are going to get a small breed and for imprinting then, yes, your ability through those first few weeks will make the difference between life or death for your owlet. Have you thought about getting an older Barn Owl from a rescue centre? Sadly, so many people give them up. Many will be hand tame. It's a thought.

I would like to encourage you to start every single one of your videos with a detailed, strong statement that owning an owl is not like owning domesticated animals like dogs & cats. Owls are wild, feral creatures that can be trained, but even when born in captivity and properly Imprinted to their human, they are not truly domesticated. For that reason, caution must always be exercises. Further, they require very specific kinds of food, medical care, emotional interaction and physical living environments. BEFORE buying an owl (or worse, taking one from the wild) it is essential to get properly educated about the specific needs of that particular owl species, find a vet thatspe

AS USUAL, dumb man does not listen to intelligent, educated woman (you have a college education, and a good one too, having gone to school in Europe) that gives logical reasons and facts for starting with a small snake. 4. man does not listen to the woman's list of facts 5. man gets the 5h#t bitten out of himself by his own snake, like a fool.
