What Psilocybin Does to Your Brain
-----
In this video, Jonathan from the Institute of Human Anatomy delves into the fascinating effects of psilocybin on the brain. Learn what psilocybin is, how it affects different regions of the brain, including the prefrontal and visual cortices, and its impact on the default mode network, leading to phenomena like ego death. Discover the potential benefits of psilocybin for mental health, including its role in enhancing synaptic plasticity and its promising applications in treating conditions like PTSD, anxiety, depression, and addiction.
We also discuss the importance of set and setting in psilocybin sessions and highlight the potential risks and negative effects, especially for individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

I have dealt with a crippling amount of social anxiety throughout my entire life. I took psilocybin with the expectations of having a fun visual trip for the first time, thinking nothing of how it would affect my brain. A week later, I noticed how much quieter things were in my head, and a lack of care for what others thought. Being around others is now just another part of my day, rather than a life or death fear.

I was on 10 grams dry and experienced ego dissolution. I was in the space of "nowhere". only a thin red line kept me connected to the rest of the world. when it washed away, there was nothing left. then everything came back. and when there was nothing, it was as if I existed when I did not exist. it was "nothing". it's neither good nor bad. it is pure "nothing". I don’t feel like repeating this experience, as if everything had already become clear to me. It became easier for me to live. less anxiety, less fuss. there was regularity. I began to notice such things as the sunrise from the window in the morning and enjoy it. as if old processes were rebooted.

I know an elderly woman who lost interest in sweet treats, coffee/tea, and obsessive knitting/crochet. The theme of psilocybin seems to be anxiety reduction so perhaps these substances, or any addiction really, is some form of self-medication for anxiety reduction. @mikelawton6885
@mikelawton6885 9 күн бұрын
Actually, it's not that predictable. There's a new pre-published study, which is sparking a more extensive investigation, done by a lab in Oakland. The gist of it is that Psilocybin can start to break down in some varieties of shrooms after 3 - 6 months. So the bigger study is to look at more examples, across more varieties and to look into the effect of variations in temperature, light, humidity, etc.. In general, some shrooms may get more powerful or concentrated, but many are likely to get weaker over time. Your best bet is still to probably be working with relatively fresh shrooms, but anything done outside of a clinical study is a bit of a crap shoot. Even so, at least there is no identified toxicity level that has been discovered.

If you do mushrooms, do them in a room or environment you're comfortable in with people you trust, this avoids having a bad trip. Don't do them in a public place cuz you will laugh at random things and you might start getting paranoid of people noticing you. Start with a lower dose, say 3 mushrooms, and see how it makes you feel. Feel great? up the dose next time. Mentalize yourself into accepting sensory changes, let them happen and don't fight them. Enjoy them! You will see better, you will hear better, you will feel your mind opening, it's a wonderful experience... You will NOT see things that aren't there or have auditory hallucinations, you will stay in control of your mind and be aware of what you say and do at all times. You will remember your whole experience once the effects are gone. Stay away from the Amanita Muscana, which is that red top mushroom with white dots. That is NOT psilocybin. Don't do them too often (maybe once a month or two), if you do them too often you will quickly become immune and not feel any effect. This will be for life. Definitely worth a try.

Psilocybin helped me fully integrate from Dissociative Identity Disorder. The connecting effect it has helps rebuild the missing neural pathways between lobes and the hemispheres of the brain. The combo of shrooms and CBT/DBT techniques gave me the ability to be whole again. I took a big dose of psilocybin and got a bunch happier for about 6 months, and a while after that I fell into the most awful mental space of my life. I had disturbing intrusive thoughts, experienced derealisation, severe depression, and frequent panic attacks. These are all things I'd never experienced in my life prior, and thankfully now 2 years later I've moved past that awful chapter of my life. My friend who I also introduced to mushrooms at the time eventually had a psychotic episode and ended up in a mental asylum for 3 months. Please be careful. It's true that mushrooms boost your mood for a few months, but they are just too unpredictable - and that might not be all you get.

I can't say for sure that mushrooms caused the downswing, obviously I'm one anecdote and even then I can't guarantee that's what caused it, but derealisation was one of the scariest things I'd ever experienced, and it was a lot closer to the mind-bending mushroom reality than it was our own. Also, the panic attacks I had were about how incomprehensible the universe was, and how there was no fundamental meaning in anything, and for some reason my mind would just race on these topics filled with primitive and irrational fear. It's great to see positive things being said about psilocybin. The safety record of Imperial College and Johns Hopkins University are outstanding where psilocybin has been used, but it should only be used with trained guides and medical screening. If it's safe for you to proceed, the trips can be extremely challenging, but even more significant are the rewards on offer where someone "integrates" the experience - committing to change.

Like, it was the single best experience I’ve ever had; I know some people get scared of ego death, but for me it was such a peaceful, soothing feeling to know that it’s not that deep. I felt unity, like I swear I could feel the electrical fields of other living things, it was like a web of life that I wasn’t simply connected to, I was a part of. I also had no concept of fear or negative emotions, I was just so at peace and knew that whatever happened, everything was going to be okay. 10/10 would recommend, I felt like a new person with a lot more energy

The mushroom in your video was the Fly Agaric. A very toxic mushroom. Popular in fairy pictures it is not the Liberty cap a small slim brown mushroom usually used for it's LSD properties. Many fungi contain this compound but many also contain many other toxins with nasty effects. Fly Agaric used to be sliced and placed on tables in shallow bowls of milk. This was to attract and kill flies since the bronze age. Pretty ,but also pretty deadly. I'm pretty emotional without substances. I'm a happy Stoner and a miserable moody drunk. Guess which I prefer. From my experience, I have found that the golden mean formula works here 0.05 x (your weight) = ideal dose. For example: your weight is 70 kilograms. 0.05 x 70 = 3.5 grams dry. at this weight, you are most likely to have a harmonious and light Trip. I weigh 85 kg, and my sweet spot is 4 grams dry. It's always a great pleasure to have a consistently high-quality Trip once a month. This formula can be used not as a clear instruction, but as a “vector to which you can strive,” since everyone has a different metabolic rate

6:12 good representation of realistic visual distortions 9:25 good job on representing the phenomenon of synaesthesia. just so everyone knows, synaesthesia can be learned; it's not just a side effect of a drug. i learned how to convert sound into images when I was but a wee lad. to say "brain pathways that are not ordinarily linked" is misleading since our society merely chooses what's "ordinary" for the sheep to do.

True, I use to imagine the chords on a piano as a particular shape and colour (Emajor was like a deep green and kinda pointy 🤷‍♀️) but I’ve since lost that ability, imagination ain’t what it use to be 😅

I'd like to touch on the schizophrenia topic. The interesting thing here is psilocybin doesn't get rid of their symptoms and yes it can trigger their schizophrenia, however there are some studies that say instead of the "voices or hallucinations" being negative and fearful, they are often times reported being more positive and loving when taking psilocybin

I did it alone and it was the most awesome and terrifying idea I've ever had. I won't ever do that again but after that and some panic attacks I did a 180° degrees change to my life. I don't expect no more until something makes me feel bad. If I want to do something, I just do it.

I micro dosed psilocybin for about 3 months at 0.10 g and this stuff helped me feel my emotions but ALSO helped me focus SO much as someone who suffers with getting distracted. I would compare it a slightly less intense as aderall in that sense but almost equal focus enhancing effects. I also ate 10g of it all at once one time and had quite the trip. The therapeutic qualities of these mushrooms cannot be overstated. I believe however the reason they are still a schedule 1 drug is because they help you question any sort of unreasonable authority which is a threat to the powers that be. Just a hunch.

Hey just wanted to make a quick note on the mushroom shown at 0:10, those are Amanita Muscaria aka Fly Agaric. They actually don't contain any psilocybin, but instead contain Muscimol (the trippy one) and Ibotenic Acid (not good for you).

My experience, it opened new neurological pathways in my brain that allowed me to be free of depression and anxiety (for the most part) for about 4 months. After becoming depressed again, I tried it a couple more times . . . . nothing. I feel that unless you follow it up with new, healthy thought patterns through therapy, exercise, and digging through trauma, it all just comes right back. It may be a good starter, but like all drugs, it gets rid of the symptoms, not the real problem.

This is exactly what we need to stop the unnecessary ban on psychedelics. People need to wake up and realize how these substances can heal us physically and mentally. They really are the future of psychology and medicine. It’s a shame that older generations have been brainwashed about psychedelics. We need more professionals talking about it!

Don’t take psilocybin lightly. It’s easy to deceive yourself by saying it’s for the “spiritual” factor when realistically you’re doing it out of boredom. I saw myself as a confident grown man who could get through anything without help from anybody. My trip absolutely crushed me. Never experienced mental torment quite as bad as I did that night. You might travel to the absolute darkest corners of your mind, something that will stick with you forever. However, I don’t regret that experience, even through a bad trip you learn so many lessons.

i had severe PTSD since early childhood. i used to experience strong dissociation and depersonalization. once i started healing the dissociation still happemed but without me being scared or trying to control it. so id just melt away and experience ego death while sober. it's not unpleasant but i wouldnt seek it on purpose.
