In this video, I break down what rappers and all kinds of writers can learn from MIKE. I discuss his approach to vocal performance, narrative storytelling, and song presentation so that you and I can gain a deeper understanding of why we love him so much and apply it to our own writing!
What do you think makes MIKE such a special rapper in the indie rap scene? What have you learned from listening to his work? Let us know in the comments!
Thanks so much for watching - it's good to be back to lyrical breakdowns!

His minimalism, rawness and unique production work in tandem perfectly IMO

One big thing to note is that MIKE produces his own music. He knows the best pockets in his songs because he's the tailor

trust me... i used to sleep heavy on the underground, specifically introspective artists such as MIKE. My first look into more "meaningful" rap was, I guess that it started with Daylyt, then Earl, etcetera. I didn't get the MIKE appeal at first until Sentry dropped. he be crushing his features HEAVY so I said let me see who "old head" is ....this MF still in his 20s - that blew my mind .

Thank you for this alot. I had a problem finding a attribute to MIKE that puts him apart that you didnt mention. This is my opinion but I really appreciate his unique ear for beats. His first album even influenced Some rap songs by Earl. I heard he was a big fan of earl so it must have been crazy for him.

Thank you!! Yeah it's really interesting seeing MIKE's progression as an artist and how influential he's been even though he sometimes doesn't really get the credit for it. I'm 100% guilty of short changing him myself so I've been grateful that people have told me to stop sleeping on him hahaha

It's funny, I always keep this lens when I listen to stuff generally, but never apply it to myself.....which is fine I suppose, I'm more of a hobbyist, but I think if you want your shit to fly with other people, this is really good advice. It's easy to forget our roots (think all of our oldy folk/traditional music) and how simplistic music was to begin with AND how god damn moving it is! Love it!

great point! I generally tend to operate the same way when it comes to applying what I talk about in the video to my own stuff. But honestly, ever since I made this video it really stopped me in my tracks and made me realize that's exactly what I need to be doing: focusing on the fundamentals! MIKE was a great challenge for me because he's not at all a flashy rapper so it made me really step back and realize how practical he is about how he approaches his music. definitely gained more of an appreciation for how underrated he is and how his music is so listenable and easy to digest!

The emphasis on fundamentals is what Ive been doing day one when it comes to production, I ain't the best producer for sure, but its always what I tell people when they talk to me about production, learn the fundamentals of whatever genre you're working with, and only then with the experience of actually doing, you can mold and mix and match techniques to expand on your sound

Bro, I really love your Earl Sweatshirt breakdowns. I totally enjoyed them all fr. It is always exciting to view other's opinion on rapper's writing style; a topic I find is very much interesting and actually central to rap music, but is rarely talked about or discussed extensively (on KZfaq at least). I honestly learned & realized a lot from you just simply sharing your thoughts. But one rapper I haven't see yet truthfully analyzed anywhere is Capital STEEZ - in spite of his known lyrical prowess. I think it'll be a great idea for future videos. What you think?

thank you so much I really appreciate this! everytime I wonder if my a take I have or a video I wanna make is really something people would actually care to hear, its comments like this that remind me to keep going. much love man. I've gotta put capital steez higher on my priority list because you're not the first to recommend him to me. definitely am hoping I can get around to listening closely soon, close enough that I can make a video on him!

@@unknownreviews7259Of course, man. Plus, you put me on MIKE now because of this vid! When you talk about somebody's art (especially as purely as this), you really be doing them a service. Sometimes, you point out things that me myself prolly can't come up with alone like "Hmm, I never thought of it that way". Take your time, bro. You doing good!
