I remember that being the "Internet learns not to go into business with friends" era. Even beyond that rule, whenever anyone left anything, it was a huge deal. I remember there was drama with Jared leaving. I also remember the JonTron leaving Grumps drama and the Greg leaving The Completionist drama. So much drama. In the real world, people get fired and quit jobs all the time.

I've gone into business with rich people who I never felt were friends. I know nothing about their lives, they known nothing about mine. It's always been extremely good, but I can imagine with none of us being friends how easy it would be to turn against one another.

That isn't always true. There have been businesses started by friends, that have blown up and become huge successes, and the friends are still friends to this day. I think it depends on the people, it depends on the idea for the business, being open and up front about expectations and ideas to each other, etc.

In retrospect, you guys kind of pioneered the personality-driven internet content creator breakup. With the benefit of 14 years since, it was actually pretty tame and civil from an outsider perspective. If that happened today, it wouldn't even make a blip on the Kotaku/ Polygon content farm because there wasn't any overt drama aside from the change itself. It's kind of one of the dangers of building your brand around people. Funhaus went through a similar thing with the OG crew leaving faster than new personalities were winning over viewers.

I remember the whole Craig/Tom split and was shocked, though I was happy to see SA continued and I know Tom did his own thing with Game Heroes for a bit. I appreciate your positive outlook on the situation. I’m sure there are more negative details that you might talk about later, but for me one of my personal failures is I have a hard time letting go. I followed both Screwattack and Game Heroes after the split. I know gaming content online is massive now, but seeing some of the more obscure games get brought up on both helped introduce me to some great stuff when I was in college. I don't even know how I missed some of the good retro stuff when I grew up in the same era (Such as Actraiser. Really don't know how that was never on my radar)

Craig is probably sick to death of people asking him about Tom, though he probably won't say that publicly. But he's human and I too would get tired of being asked the same question for a decade and a half. It's really interesting to hear you talk about all of your experience with ScrewAttack, and even general topics. Watching this video reminded me how I agree with like, 90-99% with everything you say. For instance, I totally agree that Q&As should be to the point, and transparent, and not some long, wordy, 30-min+ video.

Dunno why this got recommended now, but I remember the breakup and sided with Tom at the time. Life experience has shown me that that personal and professional relationships don't always mix and that some people are more invested in a business than others. My opinion on this has changed over the years and I'm glad to see that you're still making videos. While I'll never know the true details because we can't really have an omniscient overview of what actually happened behind the scenes on both sides, I'm satisfied in my personal conclusion that the move was necessary to for the survival of the business. Thank you for addressing this once again after so many years and thank you in particular for the detailed comment to another user that lines up with my modern outlook on the matter. Best of luck to you moving forward.

I remember being really bummed out when the split with Tom happened. It felt almost like losing a friend. I think Craig had a very mature and level headed take on the whole thing.

I think a lot of people just forgot that friendships don't last forever, especially when that friendship is from your early 20s and also related to business. When I was young watching GT; I was like "Oh no! They broke up! This is terrible!" Blah blah blah. I'm 32 now and I've moved on from friends and I've made new ones. Life isn't a sitcom where you are with the same cast of characters for 20 years. Sometimes you move (figuratively or literally) and sometimes you stay, whilst others move away. You never really think about it too much but most people weren't part of a duo that shaped a lot of people's younger years like Screwattack did. When Mike and James stopped doing stuff together I understood completely; they are different people. But I know there will be younger people who grew up watching AVGN on youtube (instead of GT lol) and think some huge drama went down. Life moves on and there isn't a reason behind everything. You may go into a drugstore tomorrow and see an old friend and you may think "nah, I can't be bothered to reminisce today" and grab your prescription and leave.

I'm none the wiser about Handsome Tom, beyond that it was a while ago and Craig accepts responsibility. I'm not sure what he's apologising for? Is there a longer vid that explained what happens and debunks the internet drama lies? Or is it simply _"we had different ideas for SA so he had to go"_ and that was that? (More info here would be tops) Like I remember Craig getting grief for registering the company in his name, not as a partnership. But (in Ireland anyway) dual-ownership is HORRENDOUSLY DIFFICULT to do with a lot more needless red tape (directors, secretaries, agms etc) and besides, we aren't privy to the split in leadership at the time, like it could've been Craig doing 90% of the work and steering the ship, ya know? Anyway cheers for the vid!

@@AdamKepsProduktions I think that before that happened, Tom and I had MANY conversations about the expectations and what needed to be delivered. You need to understand that it was not a spur of the moment decision and that SEVERAL people who were involved in SA early on saw what I saw and actually suggested the idea in the first place. Keep in mind that there was a tight timeline for the biz to be registered otherwise we wouldn't have been paid for the first videos we did for GameVideos. After I registered the company we talked at length about how I was 100% open to making sure Tom was a partner in the company he just needed to show the effort associated with owning a company - hence why I said we each had a different vision of what SA was. Tom is cool, but him and Craig obviously have different visions and the split was for the better. People want more “juicy” details and I still remember the podcast you did explaining it from your pov, imo the summary you give here is fine enough. I know you and Tom haven't talked in awhile. But I was wondering if it were possible. Would you be ok talking and catching up with Tom? Like having a lunch with him and his family just to talk and see where hes been since the last time yall spoke? Do you feel like there's any animosity between you two still?

I get people wanting to know what happened, this is what I dont get. Why would people care if they would talk to eachother. Maybe the answer is yes, but maybe its just not something either of them would like to spend the time doing. they are both grown adults with kids and lives, im sure they got 1million other things going on. I mean i would get the question if it was, if you happened to see him and his family at a restraunt and you and your family was there, would you join him if invited. that i get. but the other i dont get.

Even if that happens, I think it's a private matter, personal life between the two. Tom was great but Screwattack ended up being much more Nick than Tom at the end of their History.

I liked the both of ya Tom and You. But hey at least you honest and candid about the situation and yeah....Screwattack wouldnt be where it was if it kept going with this riff between you too. Listen I was subbed to Screwattack and enjoyed the content and heck I even liked Tom's content when it was on Channel Awesome. So its all good...at least we still got you Craig

@@SideScrollersPodcast Interesting. However. I was showing my wife that the PS2 had a vibrating attachment for REZ and a video you and screw attack did poking fun at it. I know it's not a full rhythm game but an interesting coincidence.

Y'know, I've been wondering how Keith Apicary has been doing. Have you kept in touch with the dude? I can't remember what it was, but I recently saw a video that he was in and nobody knew who he was - that was kinda depressing imo. Like, yeah he had a niche fanbase, but still.

That response to the Tom question really comes off like a AI generated script. You used a bunch of words and ultimately said nothing. If you’re click baiting with Tom, then cover the LLC registration details, what you offered him afterwards, and your thought process. It will take no more than a couple minutes. Basically ‘he kept his job, wasn’t involved in the company besides content creation, you didn’t think of checking with him about names on LLC registration, you gave an ultimatum to perform to become a co owner/founder, then chuck the rest to miscommunication.’ There, simple as that, not that I or anyone else is expected to believe either one of you 100%, but at least it would be a respectable response from you.

@@SideScrollersPodcast Gotta say as a Screwattack fan since 2006 I would love to know the details on this. I think its hard to do more damage to Jared's reputation than has already been done so fire away I say. I thought the official Screwattack statement was that Jared quit? I recall he posted later on Twitter that he had been fired and was the sole source of that perspective. Now you're indicating he was indeed fired? My interest is piqued I have to admit... ;)

I wouldn’t go as far as to say Handsome Tom leaving harmed Screwattack because of what it went on to do but damn I missed his voice. You and he flowed so well together. So I have a challenge to lay down to Tom, from a long term fan. I want the pair of you to do a video together to talk about old times. Screenshot this and send it to him because I’d love for both of you to share a beer and put it all to rest. I’d even host it if he didn’t want it on your channel. Make it happen Tom.

When did you feel the tide turning at game attack? I loved it when it first started. I felt like I was let into a circle of friends that just enjoyed chatting, playing games and having fun. I stopped watching when things became more "business oriented". It wasn't the same and imo, still isn't. It was good while it lasted

You decided to go your separate ways? Really? The way I remember it is that you snaked tom out of the company whose success was built on BOTH of your collaborative efforts. You went and legally registered everything in your name WITHOUT telling your best friend and partner, Tom. Nice rewriting of history. You are a snake and a backstabber.
