I can't believe this Land Rover Discovery still works!
After all that time it was just a small oversite on my part... The good news... I've been collecting parts!!! Bigger tires, Trailing arms, New Motor, 5 speed manual, the works! Now we just need to get to work and make this Disco 2 one of a kind.

Hey Nate. 04 D2 owner here. I've owned 5. Het, lube up your rear door hinges as they will break. I noticed they are pretty bad when you tried to close it. I really love that you are playing with a D2. Such a pretty ride. 👍

Tools and Materials Needed: • Penetrating oil (like WD-40) • Lithium grease or silicone spray • Rag or paper towels • Gloves • A small brush (optional) Steps: 1. Preparation: • Park your Land Rover on a level surface. • Open the rear door to access the hinges fully. • Clean the hinges with a rag or paper towel to remove any dirt or debris. If necessary, use a brush to get into hard-to-reach areas. 2. Apply Penetrating Oil: • Spray a small amount of penetrating oil (like WD-40) onto the hinges. This helps to loosen any rust and provides initial lubrication. • Allow the oil to sit for a few minutes to penetrate the hinge mechanism. 3. Work the Door: • Open and close the rear door several times to work the oil into the hinge mechanism. This ensures that the oil reaches all moving parts. 4. Apply Grease: • After the penetrating oil has done its job, apply a small amount of lithium grease or silicone spray to the hinges. These lubricants provide long-lasting protection. • Use a rag to wipe away any excess grease to prevent attracting dirt. 5. Final Check: • Open and close the door again to ensure the lubrication has been evenly distributed and the door moves smoothly. • Check for any remaining squeaks or resistance, and apply more grease if necessary.

It should make it better than OEM and this current motor made it to 220k. I have confidence in the new setup. I had a legit Landrover guy put together the long block.

I know it seems like everyone and their grandmother has done a LS swap, but for a Disco it seems like a great fit. I was thinking about buying a Disco with a blown motor just to do a LS swap largely because of Nate's videos. I'd like hear Nate's rational on why he's sticking with the 4.6. I value his insights.

I'm considering an LS/ 1-ton axle Disco as well. It's basic hotrodding. Take the body of your choice, the drivetrain of your choice, and get to work. Besides, the LS and the Rover V8 share some family lineage.

The LS is a larger engine, and heavier if you do the iron block. People who have done the swap are not really seeing better mpg. The h22 trans can’t handle much torque anyways. The h24 can handle maybe 350 ft lbs

Love seeing the Disco, A well weight balanced will be a massive upgrade. It was definitely apparent when you were driving the disco was the rear axle weight. Totally wasn't hoping for a om605 (5cyl goodness) or a om606 from Diesel pump uk...

For your gull wings in the back, look at some truck cap rear doo0/window upper hinge mounts. They go full length of the upper opening, they "hook" together like your two hands, they put stops in the ends, and they slide apart. IDK if this helps, just my thoughts. Also, good for you going all OEM for engine, transmission, transfer case. I'm getting tired of everyone throwing an LS at whatever they drive because it is a quick or easy fix (not always cheap).

Nate, on the H1's CTIS system, the compressor's input is piped directly from the air intake air horn (post filter). Would be an easy way of getting clean air into the compressor. As for your molle panels - render it up in Onshape then SendCutSend is your best friend.

Axle leak, maybe a blocked breather tube? It could be pressurizing when it’s hot and finding a way out under pressure. You said the engine bay is super dusty, the factory breathers vent into the engine bay. You can blow through them to see if the are blocked or upgrade to a larger fitting and new larger diameter breather tube.

I second this! Really interested to see more storage options with thinner material. MDF seems great but 1/2” for a drawer side, 1/2” for the other side, 1/2” x 2 for the box…. Pretty soon you’ve lost several inches of valuable space in a small vehicle to just material thickness. Have you considered some kind of removable, modular setup? Sort of like a chuckbox that locks (aircraft track?) into the back but can be easily removed? Maybe fast ambulance style slide in, legs up, lock down, unlock, legs down, roll out… Either way, awesome build as usual!

Love that the Disco is back. I love the direction you took with this build, A very capable overlander That can hang with the best trail rigs. I'm doing a similar build with an XJ. One ton swap, and just got done with the driveline (stuck with the stock 4.0 modded of course an auto and an atlas). I've got a lot of inspiration from your disco build. Love the MOLLE idea. I have it all over the inside of my rig (a lot easier to find for an XJ). Look forward to the series...🤓

I’m glad the Disco’s back in the picture. I was starting to type a comment asking why you put so much work into a cheap compressor and BAM! You shift gears and go with quality ones. I’m a diy guy which is why I love your channel so much, but sometimes I too get lost down the rabbit hole of going broke (time or money) trying to save money. I think the compressors are a good example. Glad you’re sticking with the factory motor. I can’t wait to see that. And finally, how do you not already have a cnc machine? With all the custom stuff, you definitely need one.

Great to see the Rover coming back mate. Love the idea to upgrade the same engine type too. On the compressor is there a risk that running the air from the same air box could cause a vacuum issue with the engine pulling all the air that the compressors want. Might be worth thinking about.

The box should have enough flow that it won't cause any issues but I have definitely considered this just like you are saying. But if it can flow enough air to feed the engine at 5k rpm then there won't be any vacuum in the box at idle. The compressors only run when the truck is at idle basically

Impatiently waiting your LS commentary. I've been really looking at the ACE kit that keeps all the original wiring/electronics in tact so EVERYTHING still works. That's important to me. BUT, they only offer it for the auto because of the hybrid bellhousing. I'll be keeping tabs on your manual swap too. Loved the tire carrier build too. Your old one you sold me a couple years back has been serving me well!

As a die hard LS fan, I sorta laughed. As a fan loyal follower of your channel, I really want to see how the 4.6 Landy engine is better. Also, ls swaps are sort of... over used. As the comments for a video less than a day-old clearly suggest, your Land Rover series is not just well-liked, it is also unique and different. That is a hard thing to pull off these days on KZfaq, but you did it. And you did it very well. No need to apologize for the time spent on the details--for those of us who actually own this vehicle, the great detail (like the spare tire/rear bumper build) are greatly appreciated. Since our discussion at SEMA last year I have spent a lot of time rebuilding my 2004 D-2 and this video series was very, very helpful. I have been working on Rovers for over 20 years so please take that as an honest compliment. For what it is worth, a few topics that might be nice to cover in the upcoming videos (if you are so inclined...): (1) Can you talk a little bit about the Chevy LS/LM A.C.E. conversion option? That one is definitely very different than all the other Chevy 350 builds given the double ECU/wiring configuration, the ability to keep the stock tranny/t-case/axles, and can also be done pretty cheap if you have middle-of-the-road mechanical capabilities and opt for ACE to build your plug-and-play wiring harness. (2) Can you talk a little bit more about your front and rear sway-bar configuration? I have seen three Discos go turtle over the last 20+ years and each time it was from a completely disconnected front end unloading combined with too much throttle and bouncing. It would be great to hear your opinion of how your sway bar mods affected this issue (on my old TJ the Currie anti-rock made a night-and-day difference). Thanks again for providing quality and unique content!

Hey Nate, I really enjoyed this vid (as I do all your vids). One thing I wanted to mention is that airbag failures are actually relatively rare if the system is maintained (no 15 year old airbags on max flex...). We (GAP Diagnostic - we make diagnostic systems for Land Rovers albeit starting with the L322 RR or LR3. Hit me up if you ever go for a newer Land Rover :-p) see all sorts of EAS problems in Land Rovers - airbags are generally not an issue. That said, the systems need to be maintained and our customers have mainly on stock or mildly modified suspensions such as with a rod lift or lifted electronically through our systems. But if you're within the specified range of travel for your airbags, I wouldn't worry too much about them. Getting something in there to damage them is actually quite rare (not impossible, though).

As others have said I'm so glad your sticking with a rover v8. People saying its cheaper and easier to go with an LS, I can't see how. You won't need to piggy back ecu's, deal with a pile of wiring etc, it'll just go in! I have a '04 disco and I love it! They have their issues but if you get ahead of them they aren't too bad. And I've never had trouble getting parts. As for your hydraulic assist I've read that you can tap the cover on the end and use the bleed port. If I can find the write up ill send it your way. I'm so looking forward to more rover content, keep it Nate!

This new series is going to epic Nate , all the upgrades will make a marked difference in more ways than we know ,staying with the OE style powertrain and 5 speed std that'll be HD only works to your benefit and you won't be modding any great amount of engine compartment or trans tunnel will help and save you a huge amount of fabrication time and $$ , I have a ton of cousins in the UK and lots have Land Rovers and when they replace something on them from local companies and find out how much better they are than factory , quite frankly they can't get over the difference in performance, so an LS swap isn't any better , I have been in lots of different generations of Land Rovers and even ones that are armour plated used by the Northern Ireland Constabulary , your choices are sound, and will be awesome to watch in the coming episodes of the version 2.0 👍 it'll be a blast

Boy Nate can’t wait to see this all come together and be finished , its gonna be awesome .. i have a 2006 Liberty set up for overlanding , just like your brothers ,but with the 3.7 , and when it craps the bed im gonna put the same thing back in it , for me there is alot to say for worry free reliability.. i do oil analysis every oil change and they still come back perfect and burns 1.5 quarts of oil in 5,000 miles even tho the clock says it has 265,000 miles on it , i am the second owner and have rebuilt or replaced every single part on the jeep except the engine , so i dont know if it has been replaced before i got it .. but something about that jeep ii just love , so when its time a new 3.7 will go in ..

Heck yeah man, I have a cheap little Viair that I’ve been using for years. The thing gets hot af when I’m airing back up every time but she keeps on chugging away! Good stuff Nate! Also, here’s my two cents on roof racks… Had a steel one on an old rig and it was really noticeable how heavy it was. We have aluminum rack with a RTT on my current rig, don’t even notice it. P.S. Glad you aren’t doing an LS swap on this one 👍🏻

I'm not a Landrover guy by any means but I loved this project and I'm really glad its being resurrected! As cool as the roof rack looks I always thought it was way overkill and very heavy so that's not a surprise. I've had a Viair compressor in my airbagged car for close to a decade now with no issues so I'm sure that will be a reliable upgrade. And interested to see what you do with the gullwings as im considering putting them on my partners van! Keep up the epic videos and adventures!

as someone whos built a couple 4.6s rv8s and raced them spend the extra and buy bosch coil packs ive found anything other than genuine bosch to be crap whod of thought a bosch ecu likes bosch parts XD

My Viair Compressor has been solid for the last five years. So I think you will be pretty happy with these. And I am so happy that you are not doing an LS swap. I am so sick of watching people do junk yard engine swaps. Especially if it’s into a non-GM vehicle. So looking forward to seeing the upgraded Rover V8 going into it.

l love this build, my son and l are doing a build on the same model but with the td5 auto which runs great with a few upgrades. looking forward to the next video. great channel.

Nate your comment about the LS swap is spot on. People are constantly telling me "Why doing you duramax swap your pig?" Well, I'll tell you why - because changing the powerplant of a vehicle to something it wasn't designed and engineered for is a road to endless pain and misery... and nearly every owner that has swapped their 6.5 to a Dmax has said the same thing. It's not just the engine that has to be swapped. It's the trans, the tcase, the driveshafts, the diffs, the halfshafts, the hubs, the fuel system - not to mention on my rig you HAVE to put in a body lift to fit the damn thing in the truck. It's just not worth it in the long run. Good choice on engine dude. I approve.

You shouldn't need to tap the steering box for hydro assist.There are a few (eg Gwyn Lewis) kits for the Land Rover 4 bolt box that are bolt on. They should fit the D2 box as well because it is the old 4 bolt box but with a thicker sector shaft for added strength (a failure point on the Defender and D1 boxes when run with bigger tyres).

Use a water jet for the inner window molle. Much better detail and usually a bit cheaper. Also pumped for this series!

Start looking for a pedal box if you haven't already. Thay hard to find in the USA especially for a disco 2 since they are slightly different from disco 1/RRC. The factory one can be modified to accept the clutch pedal but I found trying to make a clutch pedal spring work and feel like it should, impossible. Maybe you will have better luck. But you will still need to find the correct clutch pedal as they are specific for disco unless you are going all after market with your hydraulics. I look forward to the build. Your disco is what brought me to your channel originally, I have picked up a couple new techniques from you especially when welding, keep it up man.

Reguarding your flare issuse. Fill them with exspanda foam. Make them rigid but not brittle. Its what up Patrol blokes do to our series on GUs.

Owning a 2000 D2 myself. I too went through the research of what engine to use to replace my failed LR 4.0. I really wanted an LS however I didn’t want to spend a year rewiring the rig to tie it into the LS computer. So I also chose to upgrade with a reman 4.6 top hat modified LR motor. Very happy with my decision.
