Seldom comes an artist who is only known for his craft and nothing else. One such wonderful artist is Tracy Chapman. She is one of those wonders who are truly made for performing but not to be in limelight. She doesn’t speak much but her talent roars when they perform. She regularly used to release music but now her fans have been wondering about her whereabouts as she hasn’t released anything for nearly a decade.
Tracy Chapman was born on 30th March 1964 in Ohio. Her parents separated when she was four and she was then raised by her mother. They were extremely poor and received welfare to bear their expenses. She lived in quite a rough neighborhood and was often at the receiving end of bullying and racism. They received money that was barely enough to buy necessities like food hence they couldn't afford to go to school. But one day a miracle happened and Tracy got a scholarship. This was the beginning of the series of fortunate events which will become her life.

I served Ms. Tracy Chapman once at an event, She absolutely had no airs about her, as You can imagine I was ecstatic to see her in the flesh and have the pleasure to speak to her and be spoken back to. Sadly, I got lost in the moment and asked if I could get a photo with her completely forgetting that this was a memorial for a dear friend of hers who had just passed but guess what! She very gently said to me "It's really hard for me right now,can you please understand, I lost someone " She actually asked me to understand Imagine that? When I was clearly in the wrong. What a Great person!

@@littlewoodimp I'm a retired RN. We had to take continuing education classes every 2 years. Domestic Violence/Child Abuse/Elder Abuse CEs were mandatory. I went to a CE symposium & there were about 300 male & female nurses in attendance. The facilitator walked on the stage, turned on a boom box, & then sat down. From the first note, I knew what she had turned on... I said, Tracy. The woman next to me said you know this song to which I replied, 'Oh yeah'. When the song was over, the facilitator said, you can pick up your certificates on the way out & she left the stage. The woman next to me asked me for the name of the song & the artist. I could barely tell her through my tears. There was not one dry eye in the room when the song was over... "Behind The Wall" by Tracy Chapman, said it all.

I first heard Ms. Chapman back in the 70s. I was a student at Harvard and would walk through Harvard Square in the evenings when the weather was nice. An amazing assortment of talents would gather there performing late into the night; mimes, magicians, acrobats, and, of course, musicians. Every kind of music was represented. On one such stroll I came across a young black lady who was performing original material; some of it accompanied with her guitar and some was a capella. I was so impressed. I stood for quite a while listening, completely captivated. At the end I tossed a dollar or two (I was a poor, broke student) into a container and moved on, all the while thinking to my self, "Wow, such a great talent and likely nobody will ever know just how unique and talented she is. Such a shame." Leap forward some years. I'm a working stiff, have a PhD in engineering, and just happen to be in the MIT Coop, passing by the music department. Suddenly I hear a voice that is instantly recognizable and a song reminiscent of what I had heard about decade earlier! The sound, the style, is unmistakable! I rush over to see who this artist is. Sure enough, the face on the album is the very person I had heard about a decade earlier and despaired that such a great talent would likely never be known. Boy was I wrong!! I was overjoyed, thrilled, proud, and happy for her. She was on her way; rising like a meteor through the sky. Sometimes good things do happen to great and wonderful people!

What are you talking about? Tracy Chapman or Troy Chapmone? Ok, maybe my old memory is wrong, I thought she performed in the mid to late 80s to mid 90s! Ok, maybe I thought I saw a black woman perform at the Square who looked like Tracy Chapman.

Original. Real. Authentic. Outgoing performances. We love 💕 her guttural voice. She bares it all in her music, and yet she remains a very private person. ACROSS THE LINES, WHO'LL DARE TO GO. OVER THE TRACKS, THAT SEPARATE WHITES FROM BLACK'S; TONIGHT THE RIOTS BEGIN, IN BACK STREETS OF AMERICA; THEY KILL THE DREAM OF AMERICA; IN BACK STREETS OF AMERICA. Yes, racism is real; and Tracy Chapman found the perfect way of exposing it.

I was the engineer who recorded the demo for her first album in my studio (Baker Street Studios) in Boston. I can tell you this: the demo was much more powerful than the album which seemed washed out and commercial in comparison using studio musicians, etc. She had been singing in the Harvard Square T (subway) stop. I do remember that she would not talk to me directly, always saying, "Tell the engineer..." this or that. At the time I took it for being very aloof. Since she was part of the record company machine she did not have to work her way up. She immediately had magazine covers and TV appearances and shot to fame "overnight." I wish someone would release a bootleg of that demo since Steve took all the tapes with him at the end of the session.

Well summarized! I love music; i love creating music. I love people who love creating music because they love it and it brings them joy in the moment of doing so. In the true form of great artists, i love those who create exceptional music yet avoid the public!

Thanks for this video. Tracy was just another artist to me and your title for the video made me curious. Maybe I wanted to hear another crash and burn story so I could compare myself (a bassist since ‘77) and feel better lol. I’m overwhelmed. I had no idea how much passion she has for life itself and how serious she is about it. Excellent video, the production, the editing and the narration beyond that of the average KZfaq video. I’m just now realizing that I’m a Tracy Chapmen fan for life.

"Fast Cars" was my introduction to Tracy Chapman, not an album but the single, they say it's 167 in the top 500, I say nonsense. Why give it a number, it is a fantastic poem put to music, great voice great lyrics, love the accoustic sound. Yes, I swear a few months ago I was thinking of Tracy Chapman and what became of her life and always think of "Fast Car", the story of the song always brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Tracy Chapman, I never made anything of my life and I am ashamed. After I heard "Fast Car" I was hooked on you as a person and artist a real artist of sound and words, few are that blessed.

I just love her music! I completely agree about privacy. We don’t need to know about her love life. In fact we don’t need to know about anyone’s love life. I don’t like or dislike any musician based on their sexuality, I like them because of their talent and music. There love life is their own business. I hope she starts releasing more music.
