Mom quietly buying a camera you reviewed to support you is lowkey the most wholesome thing I have ever seen.

I have to say, the only thing that surprised me about all of this is that Amazon didn't go looking for a buyer a long time ago. DPReview started out as primarily an enthusiast site, and then digital cameras became cheap enough to really become consumer items, so it made sense for Amazon to buy the company. Then, as phone cameras became good enough to replace dedicated cameras for most consumers, sales dropped to the point where it really no longer made sense for Amazon to keep operating a site that was rapidly returning to its enthusiast roots. But, for whatever reason, Amazon management, instead of shopping it around, decided to just shut it down. I said as much in a comment on DPReview, but it makes sense for DPReview to be spun back out, since digital photographic equipment is no longer the mass market it was for about 20 solid years from the late 1990s to the late 2010s. No other site out there has the depth of history of equipment reviews that DPReview has, and I'm constantly referring to it to refresh my memory of cameras and lenses that came out over a decade ago. I wasn't at all surprised when it was announced first that DPReview wasn't necessarily shutting down, and second that it had been bought. It's a fantastic resource, and I'm glad to be part of the community at a time when the industry is entering a new era.

OM Systems has bought a bunch of legitimacy in the market by sponsoring these guys. A brilliant move. Makes me trust them more as a long-term organization as opposed to a cow milking operation, and it shows that they are smart in their marketing. Kudos to OM systems. I am going to look more at them.

To be perfectly honest, so far OM System does better than many (including myself) expected. The only thing that really upsets me is that stupid OM System logo. I don't know why they couldn't agree with Olympus to use Olympus or Zuiko instead.

Yep. I'm mostly a Sony user these days, but I bought an OM-1 for ski photography and other stuff where I'm wiling to sacrifice background blur to get a more compact setup, and it's an amazing camera. OM System are doing remarkably well IMO, and seem to have found a niche where M43 ILCs continue to be a good fit.

I mean, the reason why you're drawing attention to their sponsorships and not their cameras is their milking of outdated smaller sensors.

My guess is that Amazon was having cutbacks, and DP Review was just a line item. No context other than it was a oddity, and could be removed. After the announcement, word reached management that there was interest, that they had something of real value, and got some attention. I have seen this before, it really only take 1 person with passion, the right ears listening, and decisions can be changed. At this point, run rate had been reduced, and they could possibly recoup some of their investment, as well as stay in better graces (image) with the community. Amazon is smart enough to know that even a small thing and bite them in the future. You always want to minimize the exposure to blow back. It's telling that many of the DP Review audience looked for a successor, and didn't find anything that really fit. They even created a site that tried to mimic DP Review Forums, because nothing could effectively replace it. Glad to see DP Review Lives. And thanks to Chris & Jordan, PetaPixel is now also on my daily reading/listening list.

From the I look at it, DPreview will never be the same again without Chris and Jordan. When you remove your main anchor out of the equation, then the ship is practically rudderless. In time Peta Pixel will be one of the premier channel that we photographers will turn to. In short, Amazon's move to axe DPreview in the beginning is purely on a business decision. As a Nikon shooter, apart from Chris & Jordan, other channels I tune to are Ricci talks, Steve Perry, Matt Irwin, Matt Granger, Manny Ortiz and Grays of Westminster

DPReview was/is primary source of information about digital photography. Becouse and thanks to DPReview i bought my first "real" digital camera. It wasn't anything special. But Canon G1 was very special for me. I have tried with early digital cameras. And in fact this camera was too new and to expensive to go to shop on the street to buy (in Poland). I bought without touching before. Everything was almost perfect (at that time) Since than i loved DPReview all my heart. It is a shame that it ends including great database of digital equipment history. And by Amazon which destroys everything it touches (except shop and data centers). Thank you guys for everything you have done already!

It doesn't seem like you're harboring ill will toward them--and if that's true, you're better men than me!!! I'm still really heartbroken over this "breakup". I know y’all reviewed the xt5 and there will be a lot of carry over there, but I was really looking forward to that episode specifically, especially to see how the video features compare. I know a lot of times it’s an issue of just getting the camera to test so I understand if it would be difficult to happen, but I was just wanting to see how you guys would go about possibly continuing previous reviews.

OM1 + 150-400mm 4.5 TC pro lens here. Also have the Nikon Z8, which I use for birds and wildlife with the 500mm 5.6 pf lens and FTZ. Simply put, the OM1 outguns the Z8 and, by virtue of having the identical AF system, AI detection, frame rates and ‘pre-capture’, the Z9. It’s actually not that close, as much as the Nikon fanboys would scream otherwise. My Z8 is one of those captured by the recall but I’m having absolutely no issues attaching/locking/detaching any of my four Z lenses or the FTZ. I’ve registered the camera in the queue to send it in for inspection or repair but I think this issue may be limited to a few cameras.

From what I heard, the asking price would have been pretty hefty. Someone had mentioned $55M at some point. That's a specific type of buyer to be honest, as some of these review sites probably aren't even that big themselves. I think it was bought from Phil Askey for about $5M back in the day (about 20 years ago?) So it would have been a nice sale for Amazon but more than likely they put out feelers and didn't get any bits at $55M or so or whatever the asking price may have been. Now it could be that by the time Gear Patrol came along, Amazon had dropped the price....

It's pretty obvious that the conspiracy revolves around the fact that Jordan and Chris were on the verge of discovering the formula for the perfect photography pants. It turns out that Amazon has spent literally hundreds of millions of dollars over the past twenty some odd years on exactly the same thing and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Once Amazon caught wind of how close Jordan and Chris were to achieving their goal, it immediately set off a chain reaction which is why we are here today.

Lens destruction story: Shooting promos for Dodge with then CEO Ralph Gilles in 35mm motion picture film. Set up a low angle shot of Gilles driving the Dodge Charger away from camera. Gilles ( who fancies himself something of a hot-shoe) decided to floor the gas and smoked the tires and shot a ton of rocks and gravel VERY fast at the lens. The two 6x6" filters were shattered and the the front of the Angenieux 24 to 290 2.8 lens was blown full of chips and cracks. Me (camera assistant) and operator had what looked like chicken pox for weeks after being pummeled with the rocks. The Angenieux 12:1 lens was $135,000 retail at the time.

I know what REALLY happened... Bezos is a secret PENTAX fan, and he was so enraged that you never properly finished the K3-III review that he just decided to shut the whole thing down. (full disclosure, I switched from Pentax and bought an A7RV, in no small part thanks to a certain fly fisherman) Joking aside, glad everyone landed on their feet. I mean, this was BIG... and I think the butterfly effect of DPR going away would have had far reaching implications that I'm glad we won't have to see now that GP saved them from the "dustbin". Even with that great news, I get the feeling that enough forum subscribers did jump ship and found new homes elsewhere that they may take some time to come back to DPR, if at all. I know I'm spending more time at FM these days before I invest myself further in DPR forums. Now, about finishing that review...

I realise i'm asking this on their new employer's channel. But, Do Chris and Jordan regret jumping ship so quickly from DPReview?

I didn´t know that DPReview was financed by Amazon. If I would have known I wouldn´t have perceived your great work as objective and independent. So how about PetaPixel? Who is financing that?

PetaPixel is independently owned. This was a big part of the appeal for me. -Jordan

TBH… I almost never relied upon dPReview to get information about cameras and lenses after Amazon acquired it. I prefer reviews not beholden to a corporate overlord. 🤷‍♂️

Hi Jordan, coming from a professional video editor. I would remove the monitor from behind your head. The constant movement is distracting. The viewer wants to pay attention to you not the screen saver behind you.. the focus needs to be on you..
