The most telling part was when Goff said at the interview, "I know I'm going to get fined for this but..." just because he was saying that they told the ref 68 was eligible. Why even have press conferences? You're not allowed to say what's on your mind. We will never get the honest perspective of anyone in the NFL because they are forced to say what they have to say.

all refs need to be full-time, and get paid like full time employees. The NFL makes Billions of dollars they can afford full-time well paid officiating crews. Also they should have to past stringent physical fitness tests. I'm not saying they need an age cap but they need to be able to run 4 miles no slower than 8 minutes per mile. Lastly they need to be held accountable just like players and coaches. Require them to answer press questions after games. Have a rating system for % of correct calls. Highest rated refs get a massive salary bonus.

Watch McAfee's discussion about his idea for how the whole thing could be structured.....it is brilliant & is precisely how it should be done. It would absolutely result in a clear & tangible improvement to the overall quality of the officiating, as they would be held to a higher standard, they would be more thoroughly trained, they would improve through this year-round training & it would ensure that the officials that are performing at the highest standards are in charge in the most important games, while those that are underperformed are demoted. Essentially it would work the same way a football team does, with the best refs as starters, working their way up (or down) from chain gang to linesman to head officials based on performance, which would be evaluated much more carefully. Most importantly, it would instill a much greater degree of confidence from the fans, as there would be very clear & obvious immediate consequences for officials that make obvious mistakes, unlike now, where they can do something like Brad Allen did & then be in charge of officiating the most important must-win game of a team's entire season (as in the case of Allen & the Steelers) the very next week. The whole system will almost certainly have to change & I would be shocked if something similar to the plan spelled out by McAfee isn't implemented by the off-season following next year's games.

The thing that makes this worse for me is that from the moment the ref reported 70 as eligible, whatever happened after, someone was getting screwed. If you call the penalty, the Lions get (rightfully) livid, as it happened here. If, however, you don't, the Cowboys get screwed, as they didn't get told that 68 was eligible by the ref and didn't cover him! Between the numerous offensive holding calls missed (by both teams' offences), the missed PI on St Brown, the phantom tripping call on the Cowboys' last drive...the refs weren't rigging the game. They were just bad, period.

Dallas was on the 29 yard line, if the tripping penalty would have been called correctly, it would have moved Dallas to the 14 and gave them a automatic first down. After the tripping call they had the opportunity to drain the clock but chose to go for a touchdown throwing a go route out of bounds and stopping the clock. They would have easily gotten a first down and been able to take knees if they ran all 3 downs or went for short passes, or at the least given the ball back to the lions with less than a minute left instead of almost 2. Thats on McCarthy being an idiot not due to the questionable tripping call.

Point taken, but not entirely accurate. The penalty occurred on the right side of the two minute warning on first down, so Dallas would have had 1st and 10 at the Detroit 14 instead of 1st and 25 at the 44. It would have been a Dallas first down right at the two minute warning with Detroit having two timeouts to stop the clock either way. They would have still needed a first down to kill the game off, albeit in a more advantageous position than what ultimately happened. Knowing McCarthy and his lack of time management skills he may have very well called a passing play on second down if Pollard -- who had been bottled up all night -- doesn't gain more than a yard or two on first down. It could very easily have played out similarly to what happened, just with Pollard runs on first and third down instead of short passes to Lamb and Ferguson, and Aubrey would have kicked from 25-30 instead of 43. We won't ever know what would have happened if that call was made correctly (as is the case any other bad or missed call these incompetent refs made), but we do know it wouldn't have effectively ended the game.

Lets talk about the botched tripping call that extended the game 🤷🏻‍♂️ Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson intercepted Jared Goff with 2 minutes 5 seconds remaining, and on first-and-10 from the Detroit 29, Tony Pollard ran for 7 yards. Officials, however, flagged tight end Peyton Hendershot for tripping. The 15-yard penalty backed up the Cowboys to the Detroit 44. Replay, though, clearly showed it was Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson who tried to trip Hendershot. The penalty should have been on the Lions.

What a moronic statement 😂 in multiple ways 🤣 imagine someone you work with asks you to cover one of their shifts. You both go to the manager together and ask if that’s ok. He nods yes and waves you off. So you do the shift, then when it’s payday, the money from covering that shift isn’t on there. You go to the manager and ask why you didn’t get paid, and he tells you you that unapproved shifts don’t get paid, and on top of that he gives you a write-up…. even though you clearly asked him, and he obviously approved of it with the nod. Then he doubles down and says that you asked him if a different person who was standing on the other side of the room was the one who would be covering the shift, not you, even though you were the one asking. 😂 I guess that would be 100% your fault, huh? I guess you deserve the write-up, and don’t deserve to get paid even though it was your manager’s incompetence that was the problem.

Campbell himself said the usual protocol was followed which is that the refs who will be working your sideline comes to the pregame meeting and likewise for the refs on the other side who go to the other team's meeting. Then the refs from both sides relay any pertinent information to the head ref. That is how it usually works at least according to Dan Campbell.

Lions fan here: I absolutely hate this call by Brad Allen and this ref crew. However, there were some questionable decisions made in this game from a coaching standpoint IMO. Early in the game, we should not have gone for it on 4th down when we could have taken the easy 3 points. Furthermore, I believe we should have just played for overtime after the illegal touching penalty. There was no way to fight it at that time, so I would have played for overtime and taken my chances.

Most people are overlooking the tripping call that never happened that would have taken more time off the clock which would have left Detroit with almost no time to even go down the field. The call was made that 70 was eligible and the lions thought the defense didn't get to know 68 was eligible and somehow it counts. Hey mcdc kick the fg when you're backed up like that. They expected to win by not telling the defense a lineman can go catch the ball. So if they won it would have been a win by way of cheating.

Yeah I agree. But I do know the idea is a viewer and refs can see a number and know is that a skill position or not. However viewers don't know that mostly. So if it's a legal formation and there is no illegal man down field then it should be fine. Players should be able to tell who is and isn't eligible as should refs. But refs are a joke. They don't call obviously penalties they do call phantom penalties. I don't expect perfection but they have shown me that expecting mediocrity was too much. Ultimately I think the less rules that have to be called the better. Why aren't we using robots for false start, illegal formations, offsides, or if a catch is made? They can literally do it in a matter of milliseconds after the play. And have refs to override if the AI made a clear mistake. Little bit of a tangent but ultimately, there are a lot of things that could be replaced and work better.

As a Cowboys fan, I'm more than willing to talk about illegal touching penalty on the 2-pt try. But I will only have that conversation after we talk about the incorrect tripping penalty that occurred the drive before that would have ended the game for Dallas. We can all agree the officiating has been a point of frustration for fans, but don't come in here acting like it's all scripted. The game should have already been over anyway for Dallas and the fact Detroit still had a chance to score tells you there wasn't any officiating bias.

I don't have a dog in the hunt on this one, but why didn't Dan Campbell or anyone (including Goff) react to the referee announcing that #70 was the eligible receiver as opposed to their intended guy? I'm not trying to excuse any error on the official's side, but the error could have potentially been corrected prior to the snap by the Lions had they said something to the side judge or referee.

The thing that was kind of funny was Campbell said another team did the same thing to them. Don’t remember which team he said. But when it happened to his team he said. Yea. I’m going to keep that in my bag. He finally waits for the moment to pull it out And the ref messed it up.

The confusion was terrible, but did it actually change the result of the game? If the ref had told the Cowboys (correctly) that #68 was eligible, they would have changed their defense accordingly and covered him, making the reception impossible, or at least less likely. To act as though he made the reception without the official's screw-up ignores reality.

So we're not gonna talk about the bad call on Hendershot that was suppose to be on Hutchinson? Which most likely would have nullified the game? Looks like the refs had a major screw up but don't imply that it equates to the NFL being rigged for the Cowboys. They literally called a penalty on Dallas the next play to give the Lions one more chance at it. Instead of trying to confuse the Cowboys, they botched and confused the refs screwing themselves. They literally said on the broadcast Decker committed three penalties...he didn't report, illegal formation, illegal man down field, illegal touching. It was an illegal play. With that being said, it's wild we don't have full time refs, it only makes sense we have multiple set crews in place specifically for the nfl, and McAfee had a good point, in the off-season, they could ref other leagues, games, tournaments while having meetings and training sessions

@WesternGolfAlliance

The entire "reporting" rule is antiquated and should be eliminated. Eligibility can and should be dictated by formation ... 4 players (including QB) not on the line, and the two ends of the line, with then 5 players on the line in between the ends ineligible ... it really isn't all that hard, and even more straightforward for the defense to figure out, too.
@marvinmange4805

So no more Jumbo Packages? Goal-Line Packages? No more Big-Block Backfield Packages? You want WR's having to block on Field Goals/XP Attempts too? :(
@WesternGolfAlliance
@WesternGolfAlliance 7 ай бұрын
@@marvinmange4805 No. The idea is you can do all that without "reporting". You could put a QB and 10 linemen on the field ... three would be off the line, two would be on each "end", and they are the "eligible" ones based on formation. Eligibility has ALWAYS been formation dependent, why keep it number dependent too?
@garak55
@garak55 7 ай бұрын
Agreed, but for that they would need to enforce proper alignment and they don't. Tackles, tight ends and recievers are often way off the line right now and it would be unfair for the defense to do it this way under these conditions.
@marvinmange4805
@marvinmange4805 7 ай бұрын
@@WesternGolfAlliance Too eliminate unfair advantage. Then why even have Number Restrictions if that is your take on it? If reporting doesn't matter, then numbers shouldn't matter either. Let the QB be #70, the WR be #55, WR #42, let the Center be #7. They have it for a reason. If you allowed everyone to just mix-n-match as they felt like it, it would be chaos.
