Interesting point with court apperance..... That would NOT be legal in Norway. If you have court during the day, you would not be allowed to work that entire previous night. Max time at work would be 13 hours per 24hours. Then rest for some hours before you are allowed back. The Dept would have to find someone else to cover your shift. Kinda surprising the PD would allow it, considering the liability and bad press if you make mistakes after being awake for so long.... Edit: I have also worked the 'Mon, tuesday, friday-Sunday and then wednesday thursday the following week' shift. I hated it. I would rather work one full week, then one week off.

DBPD is not a great PD in general but that's a different topic. I'd add that only about 30% of USMS marshals make it through the rough SOG course. SOG is the elite SWAT/SRT unit of US Marshals.

Thankfully our court secretary gives each shift a set court for each month. So when you give a summons or make an arrest you just put down that day. And it's always a day we already work. Warrants are the only thing we may have to stick around for, if your on nights.

May not be law enforcement currently (hope to be within a few years) but I do security and I know how shifts can be. Had to do a 16 hour yesterday then right back in the next day for an 8 hour (thankfully)

Worked nights on patrol for nearly 13 years. Gas station food, staying up all day after working to attend events, having to go to court after working all night, attending training after working all night, trying to manage a healthy lifestyle in general was a major challenge. Definitely makes for low quality of life. Props to all Leo's who pound pavement on the graveyard shift. It's rough after a while.

The benefits of working graves, is less admin out, and the first part of the shift is usually when all the good calls come in, then after around 2-3 am it slows down so you can take care of reports, swing shift, you are usually busy the whole shift, and 90 % of the time you have to stay over shift to either finish reports or help out with calls if its really busy, i felt the bad thing with swings was that it felt like you didn't have much off time, but the good part was that you did stay busy so your shift felt like it flew by. In my career I loved graves, I've always been more of a night person anyway, so for me it was more natural. When your new or just coming up the seniority ladder, sometimes you just had to take what's left during shift bid, and the majority of the time its either swings or graves, most of the senior officers will take days, so they can have the mostly regular hours, unless your department just does a full patrol rotation, then you get to work all the shifts during the year, depending how often the rotation cycle was. For any of you thinking about LE, its a great career, I enjoyed my 21 years, and for those on the job, stay safe, everyone goes home at the end of shift.

Loved 3rd shift hated having a court notice in my mailbox. Plus I lived 45 minutes from the center I worked at and I didn't leave the metro area. The drive home was always the worst part of the long night into sitting waiting to see if the cases was going to trial or in most cases they work a deal because they have 3 other cases and they bundled them all on your time. But you did get court pay 😳

i work 8 hour days, with a massive department we are able to have 6 different shifts that all overlap each other. and our court always has us on call due to the extremely high amount of cases it sees everyday.

Been a night nurse for 7 years. It is all true. Fatigue is the worst. So glad I do not have to appear in court between Shifts. Stimulants (caffeine and energy drinks, nicotine and other things) complicate the problems associated with night shift. Diet, exercise, and a good days sleep, and one cup of coffee maybe two will serve you well. To all of you on the job, Thanks, stay safe, especially all my 🧛‍♀️ 🧛‍♂️.

I work for the Georgia Department of Corrections and we work 12+ hour shifts just because of how short staffed we are or what happened the night before if inmates fault each other. It really sucks.

yeah i remember night shift, in the winter time with the short days, a lot of times i wouldn't see daylight! i'd work all night, get home before dawn at 7am and sleep all day, then when i woke up in the late afternoon it was dark again then i'd be at work again at 10pm. my coworkers and i called it the vampire shift LOL

Winter time was the best when I worked nights. With me personally, if I saw the sun before I got home, all hope of sleep was lost. Added with the generally slower call volume in winter, I caught up on the years missed sleep.
