Cat parents can find plenty of foods that their cats like,that produce a shiny coat,and even a cleaner litter box, but how many know how to pick a cat food that helps keep their cat healthy and reduces the risks of the common diseases cats suffer from? start looking at nutrients instead of the ingredients!

That was an excellent video...totally helped me out. I started my kittens off with Orijin and SD combined but now I will do just SD food. my boys are going to be a year old next month and needed to figure out the food for them and my 7 year old. My 7 yr had been on SD and seems to be staying healthy...blood work has been healthy. gotta keep the kids healthy.

Thank you for explaining this. My girl is 10 and healthy. I’ve had her on higher protein diets her whole life. I just switched her to Hills only because of the nutrient profile. I’ve always thought the ingredients were horrible and nothing but fillers but after you explained it I feel better. And she loves it so thank you.

Hi Glen, me again! Thank you for this very informative video for cat parents! However, I have tried the Hill's Science Diet for my rescued adult female cat a few months ago, but she is so picky that she decided not to eat. So, after trying many of these other "marketing-fed" brands, I ended up with ProPlan Salmon and Rice, and Petcuran Go Solutions, Salmon and rice (Canadian made food). Now that I am learning all about "nutrients first" from you, could you give me some suggestions as to what other brands I could give my cat - if she still refuses Science Diet, which I'm willing to try again - but still could get the right amount of nutrient levels? I know I'm asking a lot but any tips would be appreciated! Cheers from Canada!

Hi! unfortunately I can’t watch the videos on KZfaq because I don’t speak fluent English and I end up translating (google tradutor) the comments to understand what the videos want to convey. I’m Brazilian and would like an honest opinion: for kittens, what food would you recommend? Proplan for cat kitten, Hills Kitten, Royal Canin Kitten or Farmina? I have many doubts, because the vast majority of veterinarians here tell us the one that contains meat in the first ingredient! I saw that ProPlan has CHICKEN MEAT as the first ingredient. I really like Royal Canin and Hills, because of the vitamins. ProPlan appears to have lower vitamins than Hills and Royal Canin.

Hey Matheus! Welcome! First of all I spend a lot of time explaining the ingredient panel is just marketing and tells you nothing about the food. It is all manipulated to look good. To be totally honest and accurate, any of the brands you mentioned will be great for your kitten! Kitten food is easy! The real test of a company is when your kitten becomes an adult. That’s when controlling minerals and protein and fat become more important. That’s when usually Hills wins. And when your cat turns about 7, that’s when geriatric nutrition becomes even more important. That’s when Hills beats everyone. But while a kitten, don’t sweat it! If she eats it and looks good, you’re good! I did a medical missions trip in the jungle a few years back and for awhile the left bank was Brazil. We busted remote villages in the Bene.

Excellent video!! I had a female cat that suffered from cystitis and would get blocked. She was put on a prescription food for the rest of her life but it worked. My cat is a resque with severe abuse, beung firced to 4 litters in her first 2 years of age, giardia and i can keep going which is why now that she is recovered from everything she gets diarea from any cat wet food. And from all the low brands as well. Now i have been looking for the salt and other ingredients for the european orijen regional red. But on not a single website, not even the official orijen dutch website (which is now even offline) they say anything about the salt/natrium. Not even on any package picture i found. (I did find tough that the orijen products produced in europe have far better ingredients/lower on the bad minerals then the ones produced in america but thats all i could find) and it makes me wonder if orijen is hiding the natrium/salth vallue of their food on purpose in europe and that that maybe is why the dutch official website of them is offline now? But now i am stuck if i should give them the orijen regional red european version or the european version of hill's Z/D. Any advice? Also her age is 4 years old this month.

I lost my guy last November at the age of 19 years and two months. He actually aspirated on water two days following treatment for an abscessed tooth!! His past two years I was treating him for kidney problems. He was on dry prescription Science Diet during the day. He never was a big canned food eater. Since he was on meds, I’d have to put a small amount of a wet treat.

I have been an Ingredientist for 10 years with my cats. NEVER have I taken into account the mineral content in their food. I have been watching you and Dr. Rae and wow, my mind is blown! My vet diagnosed all my 3 cats with early kidney disease, plus my one girl has stress issues that give her urinary crystals and UTI's. She has recommended Hills multi stress C/D. I was wondering if that can also keep the renal disease at bay? Which hills wet food is best for cats 10 plus? Thank you so much for being a voice of knowledge for us who would only look at ingredients. ❤
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy 25 күн бұрын
@@UniQ77775 sorry for the delay, while CD Stress is very renal friendly, it depends what stage of renal disease the cat is in. Vets have to constantly decide which condition is more critical to manage if they can’t manage both. I would have your vet call Hills vet line and talk to a clinician. They can go over blood work and urinalysis of each cat. Good luck! And thanks for being part of the nutrition mission.

Thank you for educating people on real nutrition. You and Dr. Rea are the only people on KZfaq who assess in depth nutrients rather than ingredients. All the self proclaimed "pet nutritionists" never mention nutrients and care only about ingredients. Nobody talks about who formulates the diets either. I don't care if a company says it has "Atlantic Salmon" vs "salmon", I don't care where that salmon comes from as much as I care what the nutrients being delivered by salmon are!

@George.J
@George.J Жыл бұрын
@@edschulhof6303 extrusion significantly increases protein and carbohydrate digestibility and destroys antinutrients. Not all nutrients are cooked out, if that were the case all pets eating kibble won’t be able to survive because pet food companies do not synthetically add every single nutrient a cat or a dog needs. There’s nothing wrong with synthetics; they’re needed to make sure that the diet is complete and balanced and the digestive system doesn’t care if for example selenium came from chicken or an additive because selenium is selenium regardless the source. I would rather feed a diet with additives because I would know that I’m not missing out on any nutrient. Even if a board certified veterinary nutritionist is going to formulate a fresh diet they would have to use additives to ensure the diet is complete and balanced.

A good, thorough, video about cats. As I understand it, male cats are more likely to have stones and urinary problems, than females. And that's usually due to a mostly dry food diet, which results in a lack of water. The Orijen website lists percentages for calcium and phosphorus, etc. Percent of what? Orijen wet food is much lower than the dry. I know you say Hill's is formulated and researched, but all that grain and "meal" and things like, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate, just put me off. My two females just had raw ground beef with a little Orijen Regional Red wet food. I have to put different food next to each other, not mixed. Go figure. I use two different supplements for vitamins, minerals and taurine. You make a good case for not feeding dry food to a cat. I know Hill's has many different formulas, for various issues. I would say, if it helps treat a condition, then fine. But once the cat is healthy, go back to raw or wet food.
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I try! Actually females get crystals as often as males but due to their anatomy it causes blockages more often in males. I will do a comparison of canned to see how the canned works out. Yeah, percentages don’t tell you much. I would caution feeding vitamin/ mineral supplements, especially minerals. That’s the point of trusting the companies nutritionists and chemists to balance all that. Any decent food and adding raw meat, I’d say the taurine is fine. No one has ever determined is there an excessive amount of taurine. Simply put, an awesome diet would be canned, optimal minerals, relatively high in protein, and a controlled urine pH. That’s about it! As far as therapeutic diets, I can’t think of any that would be short term till the cat is better. They all are forever since the cat has a forever condition. Glad we mostly agree. Thanks for the feedback, coming from a cat guy!

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy The amount of ground beef my cats eat, gives them plenty of taurine. Taurine is water soluble, it would be difficult to overfeed it. The supplement is called Feline Minerals. I don't give it very often. It's a powder and the cats know when it's in the food and won't eat much. Your comments about nutrients instead of ingredients, has me doing more research. I sent an email to Orijen and asked for the amounts of minerals in their wet food. Will see what they have to say. I look forward to your wet food video. Have a good weekend.

What is considered a "high" calcium and phosphorus level? Is there an ideal range those nutrients should fall within? Thanks!
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy

Calcium range would be .5 to 1% on a dry matter basis. phosphorus would be .4 to .8% . You'll find very few companies achieving that but that is optimal.

@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Hi Glen, if the mineral content is ideal except for the calcium at 1.10 , is that a deal breaker? Protein at 31.67 and phosphorus at 7.2 . This is the mineral content of Forza 10 renal wet cat food. Thank you again for replying to all my questions!
