Currently a page and I like it, but I think I'm ready to move on. It's a really physical job and sometimes even stressful. But it's so fun to make the library look neat and get in a few steps. It's so repetitive, but I try to make it a game by finding damaged materials on the shelf and other silly stuff I do. ;) What you said at 3:38 is so true. Sometimes I even have to help the library assistants and supervisors find things because I know where stuff is.

As someone who's been writing a novel featuring a cast that works in a library, I weep as I realize I've been calling them 'clerks' this entire time. And I've worked in a library. Guess who's about to fix their manuscript! Again! 😭

we can be pretty flexible with how we refer to each other! sometimes the place is so hectic that all titles go out the window.
@samhayes-astrion

That's how it is in my novel! Though it's not only hectic, they're _severely_ understaffed due to rumors about their management making people not want to work there. Which would explain why they just hire the protagonist the day after he applies and have everyone train him 'as they go along'. Glad to see I'm at least on point with the chaos. These kids rarely get weekends off lmao

2:35 So honest and funny! Page "aptitude test" this week! As a Master Organizer I know my alphabet and my decimals, but a little research can't hurt. I've watched a few slow and dry presentations, but your presentation style is excellent. (PS: I think that Hayden Young likes you). Had a wonderful career in Museums and Communications before being a long-term stay-at-home Mom. But will head to a school library when I am done with my studies. Yeah Books!

It's great to hear how much you love your job! Thanks for the insight as well. I always wondered how certain parts of libraries work. Do you know how circulation of book requests work? I've always been curious about that.
@TReadsBooks
@TReadsBooks 6 жыл бұрын
absolutely, thank you! can I ask you to clarify your question a little bit? are you talking about book holds/books on reserve?
@E7T39E
@E7T39E 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am referring to book holds.
@TReadsBooks
@TReadsBooks 6 жыл бұрын
ok! so this could very well depend on which cataloging/lending program a library uses; I'm not quite sure. but at my library, holds are placed on a specific item in the catalog. what I mean by that is that the library could own maybe 5 copies of a popular book, but the hold is placed on one specific copy, and the patron must wait for that book to be returned. unfortunately that means that a patron could hypothetically be on hold for a book waiting to be returned when there is a copy available on the shelf. I don't quite know the reasoning behind this, but I'm sure there must be some kind of logic.

Hi! I'm going to an interview as a library page and I was informed there would be an aptitude test of sorts. Mainly on the Dewey Decimal system and my alphabetizing skills. What exactly about the Dewey Decimal system am I going to be tested on? For example, do I need to brush up on my history of the Dewey Decimal system?
@TReadsBooks
@TReadsBooks 7 жыл бұрын
my best guess is that it will be on the literal decimals, i.e. can you put them in the correct order as they would be on the shelves? I haven't heard of page tests including anything more involved than that, but if you want to maybe scan the wiki page on the dewey decimal system I suppose it wouldn't hurt. best of luck! :)

I have an interview and I need help preparing I have Autism so can someone tell me exactly the questions they would be asking and and exactly how I can answer them sure I can tweak it to match me but I need to be utterly prepared or else I will fail because my social skills are not great. While interview are easy for neurological people I have to script it and study it exactly in order to succeed.

Can I ask what questions did they ask you for the interview? My library has a library page position open, and they say the only requirement is a HS diploma. However they say the interview will ask questions about our oral communication skills, customer service skills, decimal filing system, and cash handling. I have no experience in customer service, cash handling, or decimal filing system, so how will I know how to answer a question on those topics?
@TReadsBooks
@TReadsBooks 8 жыл бұрын
my interview was like any other job interview. I was asked pretty generic questions about ambition and leadership and stuff like that. if they do ask you about aspects of the job you don't have experience with, I would relate it back to your ability to pick up skills quickly and/or your willingness to learn new skills (i.e. "I don't have experience with customer service, but I'm naturally good with others and I'm sure I'd pick up customer service skills very quickly!") good luck! :)

What is the duration of the test? Is it multiple choice questions? What is the passing score?
@TReadsBooks
@TReadsBooks 5 жыл бұрын
hi, I don't think the specifications of the test are that regulated. I can tell you my experience: it was maybe 10 or 15 minutes, definitely multiple choice, and I think the passing score was 70%? but not everyone who passed was ultimately hired.

I am currently studying library science and am 2 semesters away from a bachelor's degree, but no matter what I do, my local library just will not hire me on as a library page. They'll hire junior high and high school students, but not me. I was wondering if you had any advice that might be able to help me get hired.
@TReadsBooks
@TReadsBooks 8 жыл бұрын
honestly that's so weird to hear! granted, I've only worked at one library, but we hire pages of any age or education level (except for that we require a HS diploma). the only thing I can think of would be following up with your application in person, and requesting an audience with whoever goes over the applications to explain that, yes, you may not be in high school or junior high, but you're still capable of doing the job, and that this is an avenue you'd very much like to pursue. good luck with your schooling! :)

You basically have to put numbers in numerical order. So they will give you 325.45, 322.65, and 679.009 and you have to put them in order. Its very easy and its what you will be doing in the library itself. Ive been working there since September and have an interview for a full time promotion next week to be a library assistant. So good luck to all of you :D best job I ever had

Wear "sensible" clothes, like your mama always said - leave the beach attire and fun clothes at home (no cut-offs or garish t-shirts or with names or Company I.D.s)...leave that for off-work time. Plain t-shirt and pants are fine.
