The political landscape in Northern Ireland has changed.
For the first time, Sinn Fein, which wants to unite all of Ireland, has won the most seats in regional elections.
That's put an end to a century of dominance by Unionists which support the British Crown and constitution.
Now both sides need to agree to form a new government.
But would they agree?
And what does it mean for the future of the United Kingdom?
Presenter: Nastasya Tay
Guests:
Duncan Morrow - Professor of Politics at Ulster University.
Nicholas Whyte - International Affairs Strategist and Senior Director in Brussels for APCO.
Graham Gudgin - Research Associate at the University of Cambridge and a Former Special Adviser to First Minister David Trimble in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Sectarianism. I don’t care about Ireland if they choose to call themselves whatever but once called then that’s where the calab ends because you can’t have it both ways and right now at this time in the EU with Russia and China etc fend for yourself and anyone who thinks as a UK should be able to come here if so. @@wataboutya9310 You say that, but the Scottish independence referendum was remarkably close, and that's with the spin being told about Scotland only being able to remain in the EU if they remained in the UK at the time. Laughable to suggest that the protocol was imposed by the EU (1) The UK voted for Brexit. The protocol is the EU's attempt to accommodate this fact whilst respecting the Good Friday Agreement. Its a virtually impossible thing to do without offending somebody. But the EU acted in good faith all along as they have no desire for anything other than peace and stability. (2) A majority of the electorate in the North of Ireland voted to remain in the EU. And the same majority voted for Pro EU Protocol parties ever since. In every election. The British government and the Unionists have shown contempt for this simple fact throughout the entire Brexit process. By opting for the most hardline possible breakup despite the implications for the North of Ireland. (3) The British government negotiated the protocol and signed it. They then turned around and rejected it. That shows even greater contempt. (4) The British government lied consistently about the implications of Brexit. By denying there would be a hard/or semi hard border either within Ireland or in the Irish sea. It was obvious to everyone that this was a false position. And so it has turned out. These are the facts. And they are not contested.

I have been closely observed NI election. My observation is Sinn Fein was unbelievably united in the poll. On the Other hand parties loyal to UK were divided into many, so that number of votes are divided among them. Clearly, division among unionist parties gave Sinn Fein a competitive edge in the election. I can bet if unionist front were united the election result would have been completely different. I could be wrong.

Most of them are evangelical Christians and believe in the little literal translation of the Bible and don’t believe in science I’m not making this up. A majority of the people in Northern Ireland wants to stay within the United Kingdom. But DUP failed to make Irish the official language just like Welsh is in Wales, UK and Scottish is in Scotland, UK. Arlene Foster which belongs to the Church of Ireland (Episcopal) resigned and the new dude belongs to the Scottish Church (Presbyterian). This is why many Irish Catholics and Protestants (Episcopalians) vote for Alliance. Non-sectarian, Pro,-Unionist and Pro-EU party. The Scots-Irish Presbyterians, Welsh-Irish Methodists and Anglo-Irish Anglicans tend to vote for the Pro-Unionist Eurosceptic parties.

Unionist parties collectively won 40.44% of the vote (21.33% for the DUP, 11.17% for the UUP, 7.63% for the TUV, and 0.31% for the PUP). @@eoghangreene8749 No. They did not. SF has the same amount of seats they had in 2017. 27. Any gain in vote for the SF (1%) came at the expense of the 2nd largest nationalist part (SDLP). The SDLP were the biggest losers with a loss of 4 seats. The DUP lost votes to TUV who are an even harder voice of Unionism. The DUP lost votes because of corruption, incompetence, Brexit, being played by the Conservatives, etc. The DUP only lost 3 seats. (the UUP lost a seat to an independent Unionist). So, this great "nationalist victory" is actually a nationalist loss. Nationalists lost 4 seats, Unionists lost 3 seats, and the Green Party lost 2 seats. Alliance gained these 9 seats. Unionists won the popular vote by 20,000+ votes. Unionist seats = 37. Nationalist seats = 35. Neutral = 17 (Alliance, PBP). I actuality the nationalists lost the election, They lost more seats than unionists and the popular vote. Its just that their largest party is has slightly more seats than the unionists largest party. Its symbolic, but Unionists still outvote nationalists. Its just the future is very grim for Unionism, the demographics are flipping. Its simply a question of 10 years to flip or 20 years. The 80 year old in Northern Ireland is 70% Unionist/30% Nationalist. The 10 year old is being raised 25% Unionist/50% nationalist/25% Neutral. NI is at its tipping point, this is symbolic of that. Every day, more Unionists die than Nationalist and every day more Nationalists turn 18 than Unionists. NI has already tipped demographically, but voting age is still Unionist.

very poor analysis esepcially from the graham fellow fromt eh university of cambridge. firstly his figures for support for a united ireland he said between 25% and i think he said 35% are deeply inaccurate . Polls of course bring back different answers based on the question asked. Iam sure soem polls have put a united ireland vote significantly higher . Also int eh alst election the combined nationalist vote with Sinn fein SDLP aontu and PBPA is close to 40%. In addition, you never addressed the very strong chance that Sinn fein become the governing party in the republic of ireland, which looks exceedingly likely in the election due in 2 years. This would allow SF to use the force and abilities of the irish government to really out the vote on the table and start cross community conversations about it, that will undoubtely raise the vote as it did when the snp did similar in scotland.. The united ireland vote starts already froma much higher hardcore base than the snp had britain now is taking about breeching the protcol. this is likely to lead to a trade war damaging the 6 counties. the unionists and britan have proved wholly unable to govern the 6 counties with SF in government in the republic working with the EU and USA i am sure the package of a new ireland that is put infront of the electorate will be very attractive. I would still predict that in 2030 when i expect the vote that unionist hardcore vote will be somewhat over 40% maybe to 45% but a united ireland vote would prevail. your chosen commentators did not show a divergence of opinions that would reflect reality and also in certain cases didnt know the facts on the ground .
