The “baby-faced bomber”, Shane Paul O’Doherty, joined the IRA at 15 years of age. After a brutal letter bomb campaign, he wrote letters of apology to his victims from his prison cell.
“I was sent alone to bomb London. I was 18 years of age”. As a child soldier of the IRA, Shane O’Doherty was responsible for the first deadly letter bomb campaign in London. O’Doherty repented in prison, writing letters of apology to his victims and publicly campaigning for peace. O’Doherty now asks himself if he can ever undo the pain he caused.

I grew up in Northern Ireland as a Catholic from 1970-2000 then i emigrated. The IRA were wrong. The bombing campaign and armed struggle were wrong and cannot be morally justified. So many innocent people were killed. I realize why they started, as a response to the conditions at the time and I understand the gunmen on both sides, but no matter what way you slice it, it was just just wrong.

I did two tours in the 80,s on the border far away from the madness of Belfast. You wouldn't know the difference from the Catholics and Protestants just by sight unless you had a players list of all the Known IRA. Stopped and searched quite a few on the border checkpoints but I'm pleased to say I never had to fire a shot in anger. I could never understand the animosity between the different factions and it puzzled me why they never got along being an atheist but christened church of England myself. I'm glad it's sorted out now because I wouldn't like it to go back to the bad old days.

You hit the nail on the head when you said God bless you all. Answer me this, why would God bless anyone now and not when innocent people were being blown to smithereens? When we finally remove this stupid, illogical belief, peace might have a chance. Really, try to apply some logic. The Catholics were fighting the Protestants and the Protestants were fighting the Catholics, who was God blessing then?

Unfortunately, armed struggle has done nothing but killed men, women and children and imprisoned men and women. I understand how easy it was to get caught up in wanting to fight for your freedom and country, but everyone was just disposable on both sides to the paramilitary groups. And to think that not much has changed in NI since the 1980s is just extremely disappointing and sad..but it seems like it is Irish history, doesn't it? I hope to see a united country and one where religion does not define a person...

All evil killers turn to Bible bashing. Myra Hindley,Rose West. They think it will make people think, well he was a bastard but he's turned to God. Ask your victim's,the father's and mothers who lost children .See what they think about you.Not just Catholics, protestants as well .It is too late to be sorry. The damage has been done.I could never forgive anyone that murdered members of my family.

There in 1970 and as a young soldier felt but for a change of UK government the 40 + tragic years could have been avoided. As the video progressed I warmed to the guy and his message! How is victims would view this I don’t know, but I applaud him for making this video. I wish peace to all the people of The Island of Ireland and no return to dark times.

This was beautiful. Thank you. All people, especially young people, need to be given an offramp from radicalism and violence. If they aren't afforded a real opportunity to be forgiven and accepted, there's no incentive to ever change. I'm so glad you changed, sir.

What a wonderful and moving story. How a man moved from war to peace. He probably saved as many lives as he took by the change of his ways and his efforts to make peace. It is amazing how Jesus can change things around completely in a split second - he probably created this entire universe in a split second.

Child soldiers are below 14, though all my uncles were to the point their mama would have had to call cops if they’d been too determined to fight with her below that age. To say you take no responsibility for yourself because you weren’t middle aged yet is just excuses. No hard feelings, but don’t feel the need to disrespect your own agency to be accepted. It’s a respectable cause, but we are all glad it’s being pursued politically now.

Now, I remember when Domnall Ó Murchadha was trying to skip across to Antrim for a PIRA job in '72, his bird was opposed, but I said 'Aibreann, you must let him go, he's doing the Lord's work for sure', so he went and the UVF kneecapped him on Crosskennan Road. Looking back, it wasn't my best recommendation. :/
