What's Best a 3 Jaw or 4 Jaw Lathe Chuck for Accuracy?

What's best? No matter how accurate your self centering 3 jaw lathe chuck is it's no match for an independent 4 jaw chuck. In this video we take a 60 year old 3 jaw chuck with ONLY 2 thou run out but show how a 60 year old 4 jaw will give you none, well a tenth of a thou. Thanks for watching.

Thank you, great job showing the value of using a 4 jaw chuck. When I bought my lathe, a South Bend 13" made in 1960 it came with over 50 5C collets and 2- 4 jaw chucks, a 10" and 12-1/2" 4-jaw. I looked for weeks trying to find a decent 3 jaw self centering chuck but the prices were outrageous. It didn't occur to me that I had it all right in front of me. Collets that go up to 1-1/16" diameter and two 4 jaw chucks that could handle everything else from 1-1/8" to the lathe's limit. Thanks for the videol

Thanks so much Paul, sounds like you have a lovely set up and you understand the importance of a 4 jaw, it's not just for holding square stuff! I see the question being asked a lot on forums "why is my lathe not accurate....etc. etc." and people spend days trying to get a 3 jaw set up and after the first couple of uses it's not anymore. 4 jaws unfortunately for most people sit in the cupboard because they take time to set up compared to a 3. What about NOT independent 4 jaw ?

Hi Tony, do you mean a self centering 4 jaw? if so they are the same principle as a 3 jaw self centering, because you can't move the work around on each jaw independently the work is only as accurate as the chuck the independent chucks you can almost get to zero run out. Thanks for watching.

@@mattsbitsnbobsworkshop but they allow you to do squares. I guess 4 is better then 3.

@@tonycstech , Yes, if I was only allowed 1 chuck I would go for a 4 jaw.
