Mark, you are the one. Not overly professional ( I mean that in the nicest way, not out to make a bomb from sponsorships), but really honest and heartfelt. I love that you break the rules in a learned way. Especially the crowding out, but with logic and experience. Lots of great harvest without crazy amounts of space. Especially the symbiotic relationships. None of this is rocket science, but you add advice that's gained from lots of experience and experimentation, and is simple to follow. Tried to film a clip through the week but the builders out the back were too loud. Just tried again & the dog a few doors starts off at Lizzie wandering around the yard. Just can't win sometimes. 😄 All should be calm by the time your clips done. I didn't realise that's where the Cat Face tomatoes came from, thanks. 👍 It has been a very mild winter so far in the SE. The Kang kong in the aquaponics is still trying to take over beds where normally it would of almost died off by June. I adore your garden and am so thankful for your willingness to invite us in. Thank you so much. Being in Pennsylvania, USA, I'm jealous of your being able to grow your garden in all seasons. Tomatoes and beans and eggplants in winter? What?! (SO JEALOUS!) My great-grandmother was an American Indian, and as such, we were taught companion planting. In specific, the Three Sisters, which were corn, beans, and squash. The corn was a support for the climbing beans; the beans held the corn nice and straight and took "the air to the roots" (which we now know as "nitrogen-fixing"), and the squash protected the Sisters' feet, keeping them cool and moist and clean. When you mentioned having beans help to support your tomatoes, it brought this very old bit of garden wisdom to mind, and I think it's brilliant. Perhaps the Aussie version of Three Sisters is tomatoes, beans, and lettuces! :)

You're videos are great. The surprise noises make it feel more like your taking your friends through the garden rather than a perfectly edited tutorial. I am jealous of your weather. Here in the Mojave desert we hit triple digits early this year and I'm struggling to keep my garden alive.

About mulching and weeds: i just finished watching a video blog from a permaculture site and her opinion on mulching is worth a try. She puts shredded newspaper on a bed as the last layer before mulching to control weeds and after throwing in her compost. then she digs down to below the newspaper to put in her seedlings. I am definitely going to do this. Your use of the cardboard is the same idea. I used cardboard in my yard where i wanted borders, knowing that digging is out of the question, then threw on a bit of soil and amendments as needed.

My most successful plant in my subtropical QLD vegetable patch this winter has been Fennel. I grew some in Spring last year and it was an average outcome but my autumn planting has yielded me some very happy 1.8m plants. You should definitely give fennel a try.

Love self seeding produce plants, permaculture potential. Hate to sound purist but tho I use cardboard some in the garden I don't let it rot into soil, I pick it up and throw it out, it contains glues and non-biodegradable persistent chems that you don't want in your diet. I enjoyed this vid even MORE than most of yours, very interesting!

I get a lot of self seeding plants from my worm castings, I refer to them as "volunteers". Had a couple mangos volunteer but sadly they only survived a couple years.

Hi self sufficient me hey mike saluting you and your fam from Los Angeles Ca USA I love your videos it give me the information tools I need to do my gardens as well it enlightens me with my own ideas as soon as I retire to Honduras I'll applie your ideas combined with my own to get my garden going thank you; now one thing I wanted to tell you about covering one of your raised garden beds with cardboards I would advice against using it for mulch for one reason only carboards when they're made they put this big giant bowl or containers the trees are chop up in to tiny pieces in a soupy like kind of thing and they put glue in them to keep the cardboard together I work at a cardboard company in Los Angeles and I learned about this and like said my good friend I advice against using it as mulch I this information helps you to keep a very organic garden and now have a wonderful day like you aussies say good day mate

Last week we had the hottest few days since 1976 and now we've had lots for rain for few days and the temperature has dropped like a led balloon. Our gardens/ plants are all confused. Hi Mark, I live in Townsville, so your garden has been inspirational for me. My worst problem is the dusty fungus on pumpkin, zucchini and recently the spaghetti squash. Last year my sqash did really well, so I've planted more (love them :)) but the fungus all but killed it. You breezed over that point, (my zucchinis also diedthis year) and would be good to hear how you combat an extreme case.

hello, great to see aussie content ! any tips for keeping slugs and snails at bay , i somtimes go out and collect ,then destroy buckets of snails but they keep coming ! they can eat through a new bed of seedlings in a night .

I am so happy for you for all your new subs! So, this comment may be a minority but for me personally, it is easier for me to watch an 8-15 min video than a 30 min one. I usually can't watch most ones that are that long yet I really want to support your channel. Not sure how often you post videos, ( I should bc I watch most of them!) but more frequent and shorter videos, I find, are possibly more productive for youtube content makers. Just my humble suggestion. Love you and all your channel info. It is very unique.

Hi Mark Thanks for this video. I commented in another vid about what to grow now in Mauritius. This gives me a heap of info. Good to see so many plants grouped together and not just neat rows of one crop! I have self seeding tomatoes and amarant, I think I need to pull them up gently and prepare the soil, so that they have enough nourishment. I would love to get a link to a growing calendar for the subtropics, if you have one. I know that we also have good trading relations with Australia. Could you reccomend a good seed supplier where I can get a good seed which includes asian greens also. Thank you
