Hol up Back right the hell up So you’re telling me that the veil curse: the one that turned Ob Nixilus into a demon soooooooo hard that he lost his planeswalker spark and had to drain almost an entire plane’s worth of mana in order to respark it and half (that’s right HALF) way cure it. The very same veil curse that Archangel mother forking Avacyn couldn’t even cure when Garruk asked. and she was kinda designed to protect humanity from curses (ie the curse mute) That veil curse gets cured by some old pot in a river

Yeah that was very anticlimactic as a solution for Garruk's curse. Like, "ah he's just the first printed green walker, he's old news and no one cares."

I mean ob nixilis only lost his spark because nahiri got rid of it with her abilities and the hedrons(since she made them.). She intended on making him lose it. Jace only made it so that the hedron would act as a bandaid over garruk’s curse. Keeping it in check till they found a cure. Other than I’m not sure how the holy grail(essentially) could get rid of one’s curse. Maybe if he died and it brought him back to life in his true form? Idk

Regarding Kenrith not recognizing Oko for what he was while Oko was disguised as Cado, they establish that Oko has some charming influence which could be the reason Kendrick seemingly didn't notice

Yes this is exactly why they noted the king's eye for detail beforehand. If the king has an eye for detail and didn't notice a large one, then something must be off aka magic of some kind.

The story would be a lot better with Liliana hiding as a witch on Eldraine meanwhile Garruck is hunting her for the curse. Liliana was a healer before, so she could be creating potions for the people while searching for the MAGIC Cauldron

I know you're kinda nitpicking things for yuks, but the book does say that most people trying to cross the blue castle's moat just fly across. People only deal with the merfolk if they're trying to impress somebody - either the mirror or they're gunning for knighthood. I thought the story was cute, although maybe the War of the Spark novel just mercilessly throttled my expectations.

I completely agree and am entertained for the most part, but a quick comment on the green not getting Garruk a bird army comment. The means are a little strange, but green is most definitely renowned for "bringing down" flying creatures, which is the outcome of that little exchange. Yes, it would've potentially been cooler and more on theme if there was another way that he grounded oko's drakeform (like throwing an axe or casting a net (he's a hunter right? maybe he has one)) but I think the outcome of the action is quite green in flavour even if the action itself was not.

Yeah definitely. Oko and Xenagos are both chaotic Fey creatures. And I totally agree, the flavor text has always done a much better job building the setting and telling the story of a plane than other media.

Maro himself has said that's why he got into Magic. The snippets of flavor text allow you to create your own story, whereas written stories, by nature, take away your agency as a storyteller. I think that's why he keeps going on about the "creating your own fairytales from the tropes on cards"; that isn't marketing for once, it's what he truly loves and is probably most nostalgic about from old Magic before the printed stories existed.

@@FluffyTurbo Seems more Kamigawa to me. May be a kami shapeshifter only pretending to be a faerie while on Eldraine. I'd love a planeswalker that looked different/had totally new abilities(/perhaps even colors, while being base-blue) every set! It'd allow them to have a continuous character without the planeswalker cards themselves getting boring, too.

I like good stories, but when it comes to world building I like the Dark Souls way of telling a story, that is not telling anything at all. trying to put all the pieces together makes the world seem a lot bigger and interesting than it actually is.

I think the story itself is a bit shakey, but some of the ideas behind the plot seemed sound. I would love to hear more about the courts, or get a follow up on how papa garruk is doing. But yeah, I enjoyed the concept of garruk protecting these twins, along with oko as a character, and even some of the silly stuff, but it just seemed put together a bit wrong. Like the puzzle pieces were just cut wrong at the factory.

Re: Kenrith's type line, I think the problem is Human Noble Knight just doesn't fit since he's legendary. Since he's the king and not mechanically playing into knight tribal specifically, picking Noble over Knight does make sense. I think this is just a case of mechanics having to trump flavour, which happens all the time and MaRo always states that if they clash, gameplay has to win out. I'm more upset Garruk's curse was fixed so easily, which seems anticlimactic to me, but eh.

the pot that cured the curse was a reference to...a few old stories. The main one being the Holy Grail, which gave heavenly beauty and eternal youth. The veil that influenced the curse Lilliana cast on Garruk, being inherently corrupt and maddening, was cured via, again, a few references, having the Holy Grail, along with a few old fairy tales having water being able to wash away curses for...some reason. Copout? Sure yea ok. Accurate to the old fairytales? close enough to them

@happy camper. It isnt easy. I've been trying to iron my own plane out for a few years slowly altering things bit by bit trying to make it fit in the MTG timeline. The world my story is in is before the walker nerf when they where gods, kinda a small homage to Serra when she created her realm. But the villains needed work... cant have a good story without a good villain

I think he means the fact the day/night cycle was called into question at all, as a clearly knowingly false reason for the hunt. Not an excuse, more a false belief of those taking part. And that we/the courts know better. It's clearer in the book what he's on about.

For the secret they traded to the mirror, I read it as if Will traded the knowledge or secret that there are multiple planes of existence without himself knowing it. Several times throughout the book its noted that no one on eldraine (except garruk and oko) know about the multiverse.

From what I've heard Kate Elliott isn't a bad writer, I don't think most of the blame goes to her. It's mostly the Wizards story team making her write the story they want instead of giving her creative freedom to make something worthwhile out of the world and all the characters. It's pretty sad seeing all that wasted potential...

(Ryan) Nicole and I play Commander together at lunch at least twice a week, and we also love playing in the TCGplayer Office Pauper League. I'm really excited to play Brawl, especially on Arena, where I already play a ton of Standard. I've never really gotten into Modern or Legacy/Vintage though. But yeah I think my overall favorite is Pauper, but Commander is really close.

First the Curse Mute made by Avacyn a being made by a planeswalkers when they were still gods only made Garruk normal-ish, then the hedron made by two pre-mending planeswalkers only contained the curse from spreading further, but falling into a cauldron just fixes him. Like it makes sense from a fairy tale perspective but over all not so much. Also keep up the good work.

With regards to the confusion surrounding the questing beast and general questing. The book specifies that the questing beast grants only ‘The High Quest’. Which is to achieve all 5 knighthoods - it is also this quest that has the extra life sword built into it. Presumably all other ‘low’ questing works much like it does in just about every fantasy rpg where quests are initiated by anyone from NPCs to royalty.

I love your story times, you have a wonderful speaking voice, and a great presentation I just wanted to say though that I'm really dissatisfied with the books they've been putting out since theros block. I remember the original ravnica series of books. Those were by far my favorite mtg novellas.

I definitely like the idea of Garruk becoming a guardian/mentor to two planeswalkers. We haven't really had anyone get mentored through their first planeswalks, and it's an interesting new role for him.

So, they see all the Hype people have for Garruk as a character, see the fans speculating him as a big antagonist as the Apex Predator/Planeswalker Hunter and what they decide to do? Well, make him be intantly mind controled and become the new Character (Oko) lap Dog for the whole book until the point where they undo all his character development and turn him back into a generic green planeswalker who is now a glorified babysitter... Man, It's getting hard staying excited for the Vorthos aspect of this game.

I think I am going to describe the story like this: As a modern story where character development and world building is more important than anything else, I think this is a weak and pretty underwhelming way to present it. However... it does work from a more "Legends and Myths"-perspective. Think about it like this: How many convenient things happen to pursue the story forwards in Heracles' 10 Tasks? How often did any of the Arthurian Knights meet important story figures that just so happens to be in a specific place at the time? Loki from Norse mythology have a lot of very, VERY strange plans that 'almost' work out but then either fails or succeeds based on convenience of events? In other words... on any other plane in MTG, in any other circumstance, in any other capacity of storytelling... I would call it bad. Here, I wouldn't call it 'good' but I would definitely say it is appropriate for the plane we are right now. So I would give this one a resounding pass but understand why this book's story is as it is and thus' calling it bad would be dishonest towards the purpose of the book.

I understand your point but this book isn't written in the style of a fairytale or myth. It has a very modern feel to its language which makes these conveniences stand out all the more.

i really really REALLY enjoy this type of lore videos. i love puzzeling a few pieces of lore i collect from trailers, some good reads on shortstories and cards together, but its never enough to get the full picture. i guess i'll have to get into the magic books. those stories are dense, interessting and many-layered.

hahaha! I'm replaying Heroes 2 right now! Love the art and style of that game...even more than 3. I hope they make another game like those old ones! Love magic arcanum! One of my favorite magic things to watch on youtube. :D

If the sword and the dead witch were thrown in the well, why didn't the sword revive the witch? Maybe the user has to "will it" or something, IDK. When it was mentioned that the Queen brought the twins back with her sword, I immediately thought "Oh so the witch will come back with the king's sword" but I guess not.

I am not sure why he needed to throw his sword down the well? Did someone had a vision that he would need to bleed out a few meters from this specific spot and it was just the nearest thing to a cubby hole?
