This is a combination of the two most helpful church sound/media channels for me. These two guys literally saved my ministry during covid to get everything setup. God bless you both.

John Maxwell truism: "Don't send your ducks to eagle school". (Leadership Gold, chapter 10) Funny thing: when a leader is a duck and an eagle shows up, the eagle will not stay. Another funny thing: only eagles will watch and seek ways to apply this type of content. Keep it comin'!!

Hi Attaway audio I need your help: I am a sound engineer at our church and I am having a problem with the band about gain staging. just so you know we are not pros. They want to turn up or down the volume on there keyboards and lead and bass guitar to change the dynamics of the music, but I said to them it should be set at one level that is suitable for the PA which is - 18 DB so it will be processed correctly. I said to them to change the dynamics of the keyboard press it hard or slow and for the guitar use the strings to change the dynamics but not the gain volume, just like drums or any other instruments, doing this will messed up my mix and monitor mix but they did not want to accept it so I told them we should ask the professionals on this. Can you please let us know the right way how to set up the volume from the band side? And should they change the volume ones it set? Please let us know, Thank you so much for everything.

I'm 80% sure I know what the problem is -- you don't understand how to properly setup the mixer for Monitor Mix sound. 1. Each musician/singer must have his/her own dedicated montior aux mix -- they can't just "play softer or louder" 2. Mixer's aux setting MUST be set to PRE-FADER not post-fader 3. Set the gain levels on each channel according to your mixer's user's manual 4. Setup each monitor mix per each mnusician/singer 5. Do FOH mix Message me if I'm not clear and maybe I can help.

Band plays their instruments how their instruments should be played to get the best tone and dynamic range out of them. Sound tech gets good level on the console internally by adjusting the preamp/gain so the processors work their best and with the lowest noise. The speaker levels (both FOH and monitors) need to be adjusted at the amp so they're not too loud with the appropriate level coming at them from the mixer. Does this make sense?

@@danielho5635 Thanks for the reply, We have Soundcraft si performer 3 and yes that's exactly how it's set up plus It's not because of Me more, They all have their own monitor and mix.

@@AttawayAudio Yes it does make sense. But my question is why do they have to use the volume knob to build and unbuild a music dynamic? I have seen a lot of professionals playing and they don't play with the volume knob. Musicians hear on there monitor what they want to hear, but sound engineers listens everything that makes a sound on the stage, mix it and broadcast it on the right level to the audience. To build and unbuild of the song by using the volume knob of the instrument brings that instrument audio right on your face or makes it lost in the mix. Compressor is only working right when it is on the right level other wise even small amount like 4 or 5 DB input source volume gain differents will make it distorted or use less. I am planning a workshop with them to sort this out and let them understand what it's fell like to be on my shoes. I hope you understand what I mean. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

@@alohaadane I think I understand what you mean and where at least one issue is... there seems to be a trust level issue between two teams that need to function as one unit. How well do you as the sound tech know the individual parts of every song that is in the set list for that week? In other words, for example, do you know all the patches that the guitar player(s) have on the pedal boards - fx chain etc. that can/will impact the signal that is coming to you at any one moment in time for every song in the set? Same question for keyboard patches, bass parts and the vocal parts? It sounds to me like the worship team may not trust that you are doing your homework well enough to know that a lead guitar solo (for example) is after the second chorus of this song and will bring it to the front of the mix like it should be. Even then, I have seen a TON of live musicians adjusting their instruments during a "performance" and expecting them to never do that just isn't realistic. Do you expect vocalists to always sing at the same level throughout every song? Why would you expect that from everybody else? It isn't always the volume for guitar players either. Sometimes the tone may need to be adjusted, changing the pickup that's active, and other adjustments have to be made. Heavens, even just changing where exactly the strings are struck in relation to the pickups and the neck will change the sound produced. I would suggest an open, honest, attack-free, non-defensive discussion between tech and worship outside of the worship time to talk about issues and hash out how you are all going to work together, get mutual expectations out in the open....
